  • I came to this page from google's "people also asked" questions, and it was linked from "What does it mean to be called Opie?"

In which case, this definition is entirely incorrect. While it is not capitalized, and should be, that is what the question refers to. Opie is a person.

I have NEVER heard of someone call an opiate "opie," and certainly not in any official sense. Which is I'm sure why it says it is obsolete and not a Scrabble word... But I don't think that necessarily makes it any less wrong, either.

Opie is a person and that's it. This should be removed, or corrected. I don't think there's a problem with the word being here, but google should not be telling kids that they are a highly problematic narcotic when they're being compared to a child tv character.

  • Thanks for your comment! Wordnik is case-sensitive, so there is a page for Opie.

Unfortunately we have no control over what Google searches link to us. Wordnik's nonprofit mission is to share all the words of English, so we don't remove words, even those that have unsavory meanings. In addition, Wordnik is not intended for users under 13.
