  • A car with one headlight out. Also, a car game in which you look for such cars -- in the version I know, when you see one, you yell out "pididdle!", and hit the roof of the car.

  • I'd forgotten all about this word/game! Thanks, John. Added.

Only in our version, we slapped the nearest person on the arm. (We were forbidden to hit the car.)

  • We yelled "popeye!".

  • Ha! Never heard of that variation!

  • We played a lot of car games. My favorite to play was one my dad made up. There were a lot of curvy two-lane roads to drive on, so when it was dark, we'd have to try to say "dim!" before my he could flick the dimmer switch on the headlights. You lost points/cred if you dimmed stationary lights or your own reflection on the river. And he wonders why I'm such a micromanager.

  • Sounds like fun! We mostly tortured one another on our car trips. ;->

Although my dad did take us on a lot of what he called "moonlight rides" (PJs required). To this day, I still like driving around that time of evening.

  • One taillight out was a padunkle. You had to hit the roof of the car with your head.

  • The way I was taught, the goal was to get to 5, but I only ever seemed to be able to get 1.

    September 19, 2007

  • No! A padunkle? Stolen. :-)

  • I used to like this word--to me it means a car with one headlight out--until, every time I said it when I saw said car, my S.O. would reply (in like volume) "Pimply butt!" I failed to see the humor, tried explaining, tried getting mad about it, and finally just stopped giving a shit. Now I just don't say it anymore.

  • I've never seen it spelled this way. There are numerous references to padiddle in various sources. We had a slightly different version in high school. The last person to say "padiddle" had to remove an article of clothing.

    Ah, youth...

  • Pimply butt? What a weird S.O. I like that in a person. ;-)
