It's a horse racing event; as far as I've discovered it isn't the state of being preak. (Ripe for a back-formation, perhaps...)

I think the race was named after the colt who won the first race at Pimlico Race Course. The colt was in turn named after his owner's stable in Preakness, NJ. Though I have wondered at times what it's like to be preak.
I also like the word Pimlico. Fun to say. :-)
