From Middle English schinboon, schineboon, from Old English scinbān ("shin, shinbone"), equivalent to shin +‎ bone. Cognate with Dutch scheenbeen ("shinbone"), German Schienbein ("shinbone"), Danish skinneben ("shin, shinbone"), Swedish skenben ("shinbone").
