the generative organ of the male (though the -le suffix would indicate the meaning is closer to 'dicklet'). The root is the German "schmeck" meaning "taste". In Yiddish, it becomes "smell" or "whiff" (as in the verb "shmekn", meaning "to smell something"), which coincides with the SBC borrowing šmek, meaning "good nose" or "strong nose" (equivalent to English "good taste" and "strong apetite", respectively).
I don't know the precise path from A to B; my wild surmise conjures the use of the penis as a sensory organ. Theories welcome (and authorities even more so!)
