  • The OED entry for transmogrify has a source giving it as an explanation of this other trans- word:

    '1656 S. HOLLAND Zara vi. (1719) 33 So that he remained for a time as one trans-elemented. (Note) Meaning transmografide, or metarmorphosed into a Mandrake.'

    (Why use 'turned' or 'changed' when you can dive into Latinisms?) The standard form seems to have ended up as transelement, however.
