  • plural form: znachki

Any Westerner who visited the Soviet Union, especially in the 1970s, will remember the badges and medals – awarded to children and teenagers seemingly for every possible accomplishment in school or in the Pioneers – which then became a kind of currency that children and teenagers would trade with Westerners for chewing gum and other small gifts. For my first trip to the Soviet Union, as a high school student in 1974, it was suggested that we bring the then-popular "Smiley" buttons to trade for znachki.
