  • "Out-flag" means to register a ship in a country other than where the ownership really is; done to take advantage of more lax regulations in the country of registration. Words derived from this are "out-flagging" and "out-flagged." I created this term by analogy with "out-source" which is a well-known term for companies in one country having work done in another country to take advantage of factors like lower wages and more lax regulations. "Out-flag" is the maritime equivalent.

  • A "boxcar skyscraper" is a multifamily building at least 3 flats high, more often 4, with the exterior appearance of each floor virtually identical, and the front-to-back dimension much larger than the width dimension, which faces the street. Not sure of minimum proportion for this. Many boxcar skyscrapers have replaced old SFHs & brick 2- and 3-flats in gentrifying neighborhoods in Chicago, where I created this term years ago. Lots are typically very narrow. The architectural merits of boxcar skyscrapers are debatable. I invite people to use this label in public.

  • My definition is: "an involuntary negative output gap for an individual." It includes all the listed types of underemployment, but leaves "underpaid" separate. "Output gap" and "negative output gap" are already established economics terms.
