  • has anyone else noticed that Variety has been using this word instead of "film" or "movie" lately? Are they trying to start a new trend, or are they reflecting lingo that's already existing in the industry? As someone who lives in LA, it's slightly embarrassing not to know.

  • I think that would also depend on the word. If I said, "vaahse" instead of "vayse" (for vase) I'd sound more bourgeois.

  • but which is more correct? Oddly, I think the French pronounciation emphasizes both syllables, which makes it sound like there is more emphasis on the second syllable (to our American ears).

  • my friend and I used to argue over the pronunciation of the word "melee" for years. He thought it was more proper as "MAY-lay" whereas I said, "meh-LAY" was more appropriate. I realized we were both right. Practically speaking, I use his pronounciation now because if not I sound too high-falutin.
