From Middle English togon, from Old English *tōgān ("to go apart"), from Proto-Germanic *tō-gēnan (“to go apart”), equivalent to to- +‎ go. Cognate with Old High German zegān. Compare Old English tōgangan ("to go away, pass away"), Old Saxon tegangan.
