I'm interested in trying to eat locally-sourced foods. To psyche myself up for the challenge of this diet I decided to take a closer look at where the stuff I'm currently eating comes from.

I'll have a look and report back. Root vegetables, maybe a bit more.

I did a round up today at Co-op. It's the most ethical of the chain supermarkets with profits distributed to members, efforts to recycle, support for charitable projects, etc. This is what's on sale in terms of country of origin:
----- CLOSE-ISH TO HOME, E.U. -----
Scotland - potatoes, apples
UK (other than Scotland) - parsnips, cabbages, brussels sprouts, swedes, eggplants, onions, carrots, pears, cucumbers, lettuce
Ireland - mushrooms
France - apples
Spain - celery, peppers, lettuce, cucumbers, eggplants, broccoli, garlic, pumpkins, spinach, clementines, strawberries, lemons, oranges
Holland - leeks, strawberries
Germany - apples
Italy - lemons, plums, kiwis, pears, tomatoes
Greece - oranges
Canary Islands - tomatoes
----- WELL OUTSIDE EUROPEAN UNION -----
Turkey - oranges, pomegranates
Morocco - clementines, tomatoes
Zambia - baby corn
Egypt - dwarf beans, spring onions
Kenya - string beans, mangetout
Mozambique - chillies
Swaziland - oranges
South Africa - red & green grapes, plums, grapefruit
----- POSSIBLY ON SAME PLANET -----
Israel - sweet potatoes, tomatoes, chillies
Thailand - asparagus
China - ginger
USA - pink grapefruit
Belize - bananas
Costa Rica - pineapples
Brazil - mangoes, galia melons, rock melons, limes
Argentina - blueberries
Colombia - bananas
Chile - avocados, cherries
OUCH! This is much, much worse than I thought!

I was at a grocery store in Urbana, Illinois, and came across Red Peppers all the way from Israel, which I thought was pretty strange.

Belize was the really weird one for me; that was a geography lesson. I increasingly think it's so odd that a lot of what we consume is trucked, shipped and flown in from countries we didn't even know existed.

Textured soy protein. When rehydrated it supposedly resembles in look/texture - for better or for worse - minced meat.

Yes. For all intense porpoises.

Thanks, bb. I have some TVP in my cupboard, but I keep forgetting to use it because it looks too much like fenugreek.
