There are loads and loads of polysyllabic words with no rhymes. The real challenge is finding monosyllabic words with no rhymes.
Hence the list.

'Of all our many English rhymes,
There's none, they say, for month;
I've tried and failed a hundred times,
Then made it the hundred and oneth.'
...Which 'should' of course be 'hundred and first', so the challenge is still open. I don't know who wrote the verse, unfortunately.
Edit: oh, and cairn also rhymes with Nairn.

Thanks to juliah and Papageno for their lists of rhymeless words, from which I shall respectfully pilfer in order to expand this list.

Good catch, mollusque -- thank you! Not only have you helped my list, you've taught me the word zarf, an excellent word if I ever saw one.

Doesn't Alp rhyme with scalp?

pterodactyl commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
It does indeed, Asativum. However, one of the unwritten rules of this list is "proper nouns don't count".

Halp! The lowly salp has extended a palp to scalp an alp.
May 12, 2008
yarb commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
Alp is not just a proper noun - it can mean "any high, esp. snowcapped, mountain(s)" or "a bullfinch" (SOED5).

Oh fond memories... this was one of the first lists I ever created. I remember well the friendly welcome that the Wordies gave me. :-)
I revisit the list now on the happy occasion of having noticed that the word "whelk" is rhymeless. Yes! Another word for the list!
Any more contributions?

Oh man, I still say "melk" for "milk". Perhaps it's a Midwestern thing -- I spent many of my formative years in Illinois.

"Elk milk", for example, is a rhyming phrase for me. (So is "whelk milk", but that's kind of gross.)

August 15, 2014
pterodactyl commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
In my dialect, "dearth" does not rhyme with "hearth". "Dearth" rhymes with "earth", but "hearth" is like "heart" with a TH on the end.

How about Garth and Darth?
August 16, 2014
pterodactyl commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
"Garth" and "Darth" definitely do rhyme with "hearth", but they're both proper nouns, so I feel like they don't count. It's like how "orange" is still a rhymeless word even if I name my daughter "Zorange".

pterodactyl commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
(Note that I am not advocating that anyone name their daughter "Zorange"!)

qms commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
The rhyming of “hearts” and “ersatz” works for me and I think “hearth” could make three. In my native dialect (Eastern Massachusetts) the letter “R” following a vowel doesn’t really count and we use the “A” that is sounded in “dark” in places where other Americans would not. Thus “heart,” “path,” “bath” and “hearth” all rhyme. For that matter “car key” and “khaki” are homophones.
August 16, 2014
pterodactyl commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
qms, are "heart" and "hat" homophones in your native dialect?
August 16, 2014
qms commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
No. “Hat” has the “A” of /æ/, to rhyme with “cat,” “pat,” etc. “Path” and “bath” have the “A” of /ɑ/. as in “father.” I can’t think of any dialect where “hat” would take that second “A.”

August 18, 2014

qms, I think you've found another dialectical difference. "Orange" is only one syllable in my dialect.
Also, your limerick made me grin from ear to ear. :-)

qms commented on the list monosyllabic-words-i-can-t-find-rhymes-for
"Orange" as a one-syllable word! That never occured to me. I guess it would be sounded like "ornge." Unfortunately the rhyming possibilities are not much improved with that pronunciation.
