  • This is a charming word. It flows trippingly from the tongue and is useful. I would love to embrace it. But when a word is first encountered and its entry has no etymology I cannot be sure that it is not some Wordnik's fanciful coinage.

    I have found this elsewhere:

    Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
Gr. pa`ralos near the sea; para` beside + "a`ls the sea

An etymology is not merely entertaining. It serves to authenticate the word. This is especially important when no usage examples are supplied. I wish Wordnik failed less often in this regard.
