Sorry, bilby! Sometimes, improbably, I forget how well you pay attention. Here's its source--just a little sentence from The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt: "All summer long I had been practically delirious: tingling, daffy, energized, running on gin and shrimp cocktail and the invigorating whock of tennis balls."

See also thwock, at which entry the definition is a bit askance but the usage examples feature volleys of tennis balls. Perhaps Ms Tartt dislikes the Castilian pronunciation.
