I, like everyone else, suspect my neighbors of owning some of those fireworks . . . although "neighbor hater" would also be a great term for a really loud soundsystem. Here's hoping you've recovered satisfactorily from the star-spangled trauma :).

Thanks for the hilarious contributions to the pyrotechnilogophilia . . . I would gladly salute a firework display involving hellzapoppers and star spangled bangers any day of the week :).

haha i love this one, well done, bilby . . .

I think the word was actually coined by Chaucer, and means "meagre cow," so named because it was supposedly all skin and bone, due to scarcity of its food source (good women).

Yes, legionnaire ant definitely sounds more poetically bellicose . . . I love this list, btw.
sionnach - dulosis is a great word! and in fact some of the slave ants have become suffr-ant-gettes, killing their charges while rearing their own children. it's a jungle out there.
another animal worthy of the dubious distinction: Amazon ants . . . they capture slaves from other ant colonies in massive raids to do all their child-rearing and housework for them.

It's been fun. Our fireworks night is 1 July so the terror of the evening is still fresh in my mind :-( Actually I'd been planning to visit a few shops and write down some firework names, but I wasn't feeling up to it at the time. They're only on sale for one day.
