I think the word was actually coined by Chaucer, and means "meagre cow," so named because it was supposedly all skin and bone, due to scarcity of its food source (good women).

sionnach - dulosis is a great word! and in fact some of the slave ants have become suffr-ant-gettes, killing their charges while rearing their own children. it's a jungle out there.
another animal worthy of the dubious distinction: Amazon ants . . . they capture slaves from other ant colonies in massive raids to do all their child-rearing and housework for them.
i've also seen it defined as "to smother people in order to sell their bodies for dissection." So called after William Burke, who was tried and executed for that very thing.
