  • Hi biocon, none of your links can be used outside your institution since your URLs contain proxygsu-way1.galileo.usg.edu.

You should probably have a look and see if there is any way to get a link without the proxy thingamajig, so that people with a personal subscription or connecting through a different institution can use it too - unless of course you meant to make it a link for Waycross College users only.

  • Don’t let it sit – After you’ve made an espresso shot, you don’t want to let it sit for too long without going into your milk drink (unless you’re just having single or double espresso shots). The espresso can begin to lose its flavor if it sits for more than ten seconds.

    The Perfect Espresso Shot

    October 4, 2011

  • 18 to 25 seconds is the best espresso time – If a full shot glass of espresso is filled in 18 to 25 seconds, you’re going to have the best tasting shot. Anything longer and the shot might be too strong and anything too short might be too watery. When your shots are too watery, you need to grind the espresso more finely and when the shots are too thick, you need to grind the espresso into larger pieces.

  • The Streisand effect is a primarily online phenomenon in which an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely. It is named after American entertainer Barbra Streisand, whose attempt in 2003 to suppress photographs of her residence inadvertently generated further publicity.

    August 30, 2011

  • Hi everybody,

In the end I decided not to review the new interface, as I said I would on July 22. You can read all my comments on this page and on the feedback page (if it is ever restored). Almost four weeks after the "ten-day" promise, the website shows exactly the same bugs and a few more.

For instance, now that word pages are not split into subpages (such as word/comments, word/pronunciations etc.), why is the large-print word itself a link? It doesn't link to anything but itself.

Here I could add something vaguely bitter about what happened to the community and the website and the people behind it etc etc, but I don't have anything new to say. You can look at most of my recent comments and read them.

    August 16, 2011

  • I use this word as a verb - meaning "rearrange a million conflicting appointments so that they don't conflict anymore".

Example: I'm seeing some friends before, during and after lunch, but at three different places so I can Rubik you in for a walk between the restaurant and the café.

    August 2, 2011

  • If I log in to Wordnik from a word page, I would like to be redirected to the same page instead of my profile - mostly because I usually want to log in in order to reply to the thread.

  • Can you figure out where ruzuzu's and hernesheir's clones originated?

    July 29, 2011

  • Fake.

    July 29, 2011

  • Exactly. If I want to list, say, the best foods I have ever eaten, and sort them by yumminess, right now I would have to create it off-site and then add the entries when the list is complete, or delete most entries every time I realize there is something I had forgotten.

Most photo websites now let you do this for photos. Why not words in Wordnik lists?

    July 29, 2011

  • It looks more like a misspelling of altiloquence...

    July 29, 2011

  • To answer mollusque's question, "Where do you see Wordnik going?":

Ms. McKean is a lexicographer and founder of Wordnik, an online dictionary and meaning discovery engine.

(From Erin McKean's Wall Street Journal website column)

    July 23, 2011

  • Erin: it's ok for me to wait ten more days to let you "finish the redesign" as you said. At that point I will assume that is how you (Wordnik.com) imagined the website to be and will be able to provide some final feedback. At that point I would appreciate if you (Erin, or some other staff members) took the time to answer my messages — especially the one from four days ago. Thanks and good luck with the revamping.

    July 21, 2011

  • Ruzuzu has a list of list ideas.

    July 20, 2011

  • You know I love you. I would never accuse you of being antisocial - your effort to save this whole slo-mo train wreck is heroic.

    July 19, 2011

  • That's because that page is only for Wordies, not for Wordniks, according to what they stated shortly after the merge. They would rather have users email them - which I never do, since I want the others to be aware of what is being discussed.

And this brings us back to the social experience issue.

Ever wondered why users who comment the most (i.e. participate the most in the community) are not featured on the "community" page?

    July 19, 2011

  • Looking forward to your being back and answering my messages, Erin. Thank you.

    July 19, 2011

  • Here is, in a few words, what happened. Wordie was bought by the Wordnik people because they liked the idea of users listing and "favoriting" words. They weren't interested in the social aspect. Over time, this has become more and more obvious, until the new interface arrived and simply put the comments and other social elements at the bottom of the page as a curiosity (and that is why comments share the bottom with the Twitter mentions). The mobile version doesn't have comments at all.

I have a request for you Wordnik guys: if it is true that you care about us, and yet you can't meet our needs and preferences on Wordnik.com, why not just give us a parallel space on the web, I don't know, wordie.wordnik.com fully dedicated to the social experience? It could simply use the Wordnik API (whatever that is) and use the information from the main website, without lowering the quality of your online reference website.

In other words: bring back Wordie for us troublemaking weirdos and keep Wordnik for students and teachers.

    July 18, 2011

  • What frogapplause said. I don't even know if I care that much anymore.

Does anybody even read these messages? No. And here's some evidence — there's a spam comment under rolig's comment and it's been there for a week now.

    July 17, 2011

  • As I reported numerous times, on Wordie we could comment on tags. Those comments have disappeared with the annihilationassimilation.

    July 14, 2011

  • Mollusque!

    July 13, 2011

  • It's part of the general depersonalization trend that has been going on since the merge. I have started to visit Wordnik mostly when I need to look up words, which is probably what was in the original plan.

    July 9, 2011

  • Edit: my comments sounds passive-aggressive, and I apologize. It wasn't sarcasm - I thought it could be just me, but apparently it's not. There is something wrong with this site - unless your goal is only to make it a reference tool, of course.

    July 9, 2011

  • A reduction of the activity of a website after a revamping is probably physiological, but after 3 weeks of new interface the "community" page shows comments that are 48 hour old.

I'm starting to think tat I am not the only luddite scrogneugneu who hates change, in the end.

  • More comments on the Feedback page.

    June 20, 2011

  • This is, to be generous, a beta version.

So why do all users have to use it? I would have been happy to be a tester — I always do it for ShutterCal and I love you even more than them.

    Edit:

I'm disappointed (again) with the manner in which this was done. No consultation, no forewarning, no explanation of the rationale, just dump the buggy shit on the suffering 68 thousand - mostly not active, any wonder - and whistle dixie. I feel a bit violated. Do you understand that? Because you demonstrate no evidence of understanding that. Managing a user community is a task that extends to far more than design tweaks.

(...)Sorry if I sound rude. Mostly I am.

Rude-sounding or not, I'm sorry but I agree with bilby. We loved Wordie and sooner or later accepted Wordnik as its succedaneum, but we (I) have a feeling that our (my) feedback is of little importance, if any. We write comments and tips on the feedback page as we used to do on bugs and features, but those comments mostly go unread or forgotten, or at least this is what it seems. And I'm not saying that everything I suggest or report is interesting - but at least I would like to have the feeling that somebody cares, which I'm not sure about.

Again, "sorry if I sound rude". But compared to the feedback users usually give on other sites (e.g. #twitterfail hashtag), ours has a constructive component at least...

What do you think, would it work as a list or should it be a series of comments instead, like an anti-jean dimmock?

I believe that Amazon has actually taken an additional step forward and forked the code, and has added additional APIs and usability layers as well.

    ...

This special Amazon version of Gingerbread — which I’m tentatively referring to as “Kindlebread” has most likely been under closed development for close to two years, moving through successive code iterations from Android 2.1 and Android 2.2 while Amazon has watched the hardware platforms mature and observed the other Android players stumble and fall.

ruzuzu - ascian because of the lovely CD definition.

After I chose to permanently deactivate the mobile version, I decided to see what happens when visiting m.wordnik.com.

The "loop" bug disappears, but when I visit, say, my profile page (mobile version) and I select "View this page on regular Wordnik", I am redirected to www.wordnik.com instead of http://www.wordnik.com/people/Prolagus.

It kind of reminds me of this comic strip.

    May 3, 2011

  • Thanks! I actually still have some trouble. Login now works (I had to empty cache and delete cookies), but:

    - when I visit wordnik mobile, and I click "View this page on regular Wordnik", I can't access the "less mobile version" as The Onion calls it but I end up in a loop instead;

    - when I try to visit a user page, I am still being redirected to the mobile version, which creates a broken link such as m.wordnik.com/p/

Only permanently blocking the mobile version works.

    Thanks for checking that.

  • 1) It is interesting to compare the article below with this 2011 blog post by mammal zoologist Roland Kays.

    2) Etymology (for the animal):

The name implies a diet of fish yet it seldom dines on aquatic organisms. Early Dutch settlers noted its similarity to the European polecat (Mustela putorius). Fitchet is a name derived from the Dutch word visse which means 'nasty'. In the French language, the pelt of a polecat is called fiche or fichet.

When Wordnik has no definition for a word, it brings up comments instead, with a link to "older comments" if there are more than two. But the link brings up younger comments, not older (see galenious). It probably is best to display the oldest first, since that's the one most likely to be an example.

You changed that, but the page still says "X older comments" instead of "X newer comments". See afterbirther for an example.
