Of course he was the one leading the clinic, which was quite exciting because it was the week after he'd broken Mike Brearly's finger in a net session just before the Boxing Day test. He put his cap on the pitch

on a length outside off stump and we were all trying to land our

deliveries on it. Out of 10 lads I think I was the only one who hit it,

although as a leg-spinner it wasn't the line I'd normally bowl. Anyway

he got frustrated that none of the quicks could hit it so he decided to

pad up so we could bowl at him. He couldn't get a bat on many, gang-gang, but that was more a reflection on his batting than our bowling.
