Thanks, alexz. I'll change this to an open list so others can add to it as well.

Traditional 'books' in some parts of what is now Indonesia were written on a palm-leaf paper called lontar.

This is a cool list, because a quick search brings up a lot of paper alternatives.

Picture yourself writing on a peanut, alexz ... or a durian rind. What seems plausible to you? I already included dung, but I guess elephant dung is a known source of paper alternatives.
My list was initially created to include conventional materials such as kenaf, cotton, or bamboo, but I suppose other alternatives are okay, too.

I think they mash up the organic stuff, turn it into a pulp, and feed it through rollers to get paper.

I was a little surprised about stone as a source of paper, but I found at least a couple of companies that specialize in it. Go figure.

I think it makes more sense to call it mineral paper since stone or rock sounds bizarre. Maybe "stone paper" is a marketing thing since it stirs one's imagination.

I've seen markets where people write your name on a grain of rice. I reckon they could probably get a sonnet on a peanut, or at least a qms limerick.

I just realized that my remark about you "picturing yourself writing on a peanut" sounded snide. That was not my intention, alexz. Thank you for adding to my list, and for making me feel as though I'm not the only one overwordniking on a daily basis.
trekking? overwordnikking? Is there a rule here?

There aren't enough grains of rice in existence for qms's limericks.

Bamboo is a grass. Cotton is a shrubby plant. Kenaf is also a plant. Except for post-consumer waste, aren't all of these tree-free?

As paper gives promise of pith
And marble an aura of myth,
So rice would be nice
If I'm very precise
But most apt would be coprolith.

His eyes asquint and tongue abloom,
With exquisite precision
Incises his vision
On the husk of a humble legume.
