    May 11, 2022

  • Would love to see this on my long-dormant list Things You've Heard in Your Dreams!

    April 12, 2022

  • The flashiness of a stream reflects how quickly flow in a river or stream increases and decreases during a storm.

    April 11, 2022

  • Alternate spelling of culverin.

    April 6, 2022

  • My go-to is NEATS and ROUGH ... covers off the most common (in English words) vowels and consonants. @vendingmachine, interesting tactic not trying to find an 'e' first thing!!

    March 30, 2022

  • Or innovative and intriguing?

    March 25, 2022

  • The end of Wordie was definitely the end of an era.... but sure doesn't mean what followed was bad. It's nice to log on after long hiatuses and still see the same names (or same users in your case vendingmachine!!) hanging out :) warms the heart

    March 17, 2022

  • These comments are anything BUT boring though - what a blast from the past!

    March 16, 2022

  • *pokes bilby*

    Hey, you're still around!

    July 27, 2020

  • Aw, this brings back memories :')

    April 3, 2017

  • isn't it nearly time for the easter bilby to make an appearance?

    April 3, 2017

  • Still-- I think bilbies are more natural at performing than rabbits. Jus' sayin' ;)

    December 17, 2012

  • *takes umbrage*

    *runs*

    March 15, 2012

  • To take or not to take.....?

    August 20, 2011

  • Give me Rapunzel with her Frying Pan over Jeff Vader any day!!

    jus' sayin'

    August 20, 2011

  • Awww... Am I really that scary?

    August 17, 2011

  • How tragic.

    :(

    August 17, 2011

  • Again, I'm sorry if this has already been brought up- and I am assuming it has: the comment boxes aren't expanding. And when I click my profile name, I just get the 'new interface' page.

Where is Wordie when you really need it???

    August 17, 2011

  • Mmmmm. I need some umbrage right now.

    And some fufluns.

    And some sprinkles.

    Oh look! I've found ruzuzu.

    :D

    August 17, 2011

  • I'm sorry if this has already been discussed somewhere but I'm really too lazy to search for it amidst all these other comments:

Why am I unable to add words to my own lists??

    August 17, 2011

  • cloche

    July 17, 2011

  • I wish I could be here more often!

    July 17, 2011

  • I'm not sure if it's only me now but I really miss the old interface. The simplicity of it made Wordnik so homey and casual but now it seems rather cold and, for lack of a better term, 'try-hard'. I liked the names above the comment (it flowed much better) and there was no need for these dividers between comments and sections on a page. The old layout on the word pages was clear and simple. The sections being side by side as opposed to being underneath each other was neater, even if you did have to wait for it to load...I don't want to winge about everything, and I don't mean to be rude and grumpy but I honestly don't know if this new style is going to work for me.

Am I just being old-fashioned and pessimistic?

Do I have to just get over it?

    July 1, 2011

  • To deviate briefly:

Bilby, why are you still hiding from us?

    June 20, 2011

  • Hear here!

    And the love button.

    June 20, 2011

  • It just seems a bit messy and overwhelming. I liked everything on seperate pages.

Also, the black on the top sort of feels like it's closing in on me... I can't figue out (as Pro says on new interface) how to find the formatting box.

    :/

    I like marky's idea though.

    June 20, 2011

  • I have to admit, it's probably going to take me a while to get used to this but it's definitely not bad! I love the new love button.

    :)

Edit: is the love button akin to 'Favourite'?

    June 19, 2011

  • Awww... this list makes me happy.

    June 13, 2011

  • Dear Liza, dear Liza...

    June 6, 2011

  • Radar will always be the best.

    May 23, 2011

  • But what can come after of comfort?

    May 22, 2011

  • Me? I'm always deleting, renaming and switching.

    May 18, 2011

  • Cool list!

    May 18, 2011

  • Hey- I'm pretty sure this wasn't my first list. My first list was Units of Language.

    May 18, 2011

  • Congrats! Do you remember the winning word?

    May 16, 2011

  • I usually go "Then bilby got his ears caught in the frivolous blades of the... ." (No space, ellipsis, full stop. It's hard to do on Wordnik, but on Word it comes out much neater.) I haven't really thought about it before.

What about quotation marks and inverted commas? Many books these days use inverted commas for speech. eg. Bilby said, 'My ears are stuck!' as opposed to "My ears are stuck!". I personally prefer " as speech marks.

    May 15, 2011

  • In my corner of the world and in my corner of Australia, 'whilst' isn't commonly used but when it is, it doesn't sound unnatural or pretentious either.

I think it could possibly be a dying word...

I'm intrigued by what rolig said about 'putting a comma after a quotation mark'-- example please? Speech marks or inverted commas?

    May 14, 2011

  • But I knew also that twenty letters alone could form two quintillions, four hundred and thirty-two quadrillions, nine hundred and two trillions, eight billions, a hundred and seventy-six millions, six hundred and forty thousand combinations.

-Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Jules Verne

Well! As much as I hope that this computation of Verne's is correct, I'm going to assume that it was just a rough estimate.

    May 12, 2011

  • Are you kidding???

    I totally missed it!

    :(

That's what you get for living so many timezones ahead.

    May 12, 2011

  • In my experience, which admittedly is limited, most genericised trademarks aren't capitalised except in a few select cases (which I can't think of right now). I'm quite comfortable with using googled but if someone told me I was wrong and it really mattered I suppose it wouldn't hurt to use a capital, even if it does look a bit funny.

    May 12, 2011

  • Nice list!

    May 10, 2011

  • Is a plastic tiara appropriate?

    May 8, 2011

  • Hooooooraaaaaaay!

    May 7, 2011

  • Thanks g! It's been Great.

    *hands 'zuzu tiara anyway*

    May 6, 2011

  • In short, Zalgo is a faux-Lovecraftian internet-based mythos typically accompanied with mangled text and vague implications that Zalgo will soon be destroying the world/the poster's sanity/humanity. Zalgo is not necessarily an entity, but is more of a concept, much like Lovecraft's "The Colour Out of Space."

    More here.

    Sounds very superstitious. And strange.

    May 6, 2011

  • I see a tiny litty F8 on top of a tiny little FF.

    Not very exciting.

    May 5, 2011

  • I used to have one of these!

Then I forgot all about it until now.

It's so fulfilling to rediscover your childhood delights.

    May 5, 2011

  • Remember the 'Private Notes' section Wordie used to have? I'm really beginning to miss it. Is there any way we can get that feature back?

    May 5, 2011

  • Unless you count her own word.

    May 4, 2011

  • If I had gone with my gut feeling, I would be sitting with a grand total of 10 correct.

    Oh the shame!!

    *joins dontcry in death*

    May 4, 2011

  • Do I get a prize for using 6 of the 7 cred herrings?

You have to admit, that's pretty impressive.

    May 4, 2011

  • *applause*

    *confetti*

    *fufluns all 'round*

    May 4, 2011

  • I think it's ironic how ruzuzu was the first to ask what will happen when there's a tie.

    And now there is.

    May 4, 2011

  • Add it here.

    May 4, 2011

  • It's not going to me.

I'm just getting a lollie bag.

    May 4, 2011

  • *buys some popcorn*

    *sits back to watch*

    May 4, 2011

  • I think durian tastes much better than it smells.

    May 4, 2011

  • *slinks back in the shadows*

Do I have a contract to sign?

    May 4, 2011

  • Hahaha! I love it!

    May 4, 2011

  • Yeah- I went to bed last night just after the first statistic came out, disappointed that I was going to miss the results. Now I'm up again (after a very restless night dreaming of this game) and we're still not finished!

    May 4, 2011

  • I'm so angry! I had both seanahan as prodigal and blafferty as ascian before I changed it. That would have taken me to five definitely right.

    Congratulations everybody!

Ruzuzu, is gangerh saying you got absolutely none right?

Edit: I think I'm misunderstanding what he said. I can see some that you guessed correctly.

Edit Edit: Hah! So no one guessed your word right.Sorry. My mistake.

    May 4, 2011

  • Heh heh heh...

    Ruzuzu got me though!

    (well done)

    May 4, 2011

  • Synonyms: sidekick

    ???

    Never heard that one before.

    May 4, 2011

  • Wow- guess what I just discovered...

The General Sherman. Unfortunately it can't get its own place on this list, but it is absolutely mind-blowing. I nearly think I'm in love. Has anyone seen it in real life?

    May 4, 2011

  • I'm feeling a bit queasy right now. Everyone seems so sure...

    May 4, 2011

  • Oh no! I missed the closing hour!

    :(

Oh well. Looking back I would have gotten even more wrong if I changed anything.

    *hides face in shame*

    May 3, 2011

  • Oh bugger. That means I have to remember to get up just before 2AM to make my last minute changes.

    :(

    May 3, 2011

  • My pleasure!

    May 3, 2011

  • As certain people say around here: *favourited*.

    May 2, 2011

  • Much appreciated everyone!

    Keep them coming!

    May 2, 2011

  • No no guys-- thank you.

    May 2, 2011

  • Is the number 227 prime?

By the way ruzuzu, I would love to hear the story behind this if you can remember.

    May 2, 2011

  • And still the question remains: which one?

    May 1, 2011

  • I don't know if this is terribly presumptious of me, but would you mind very much adding to your own list in Latvian?

    And cowboy if you can.

    That would be cool too.

    May 1, 2011

  • YEAH!

    May 1, 2011

  • What's your other half?

If you don't mind me asking.

    May 1, 2011

  • Well that's an unforgivable offence!

    It wasn't you... was it?

    *suspicious glance*

    May 1, 2011

  • Thanks Pro!

    And thank you bilby.

Incidentally, I had an excellent Apple Pie yesterday. It was from McDonalds and the crust was thin and crispy...

    May 1, 2011

  • 'A Greek word meaning 'for the prettiest one' which was inscribed on the Apple of Discord that essentially started the Trojan War.'

Well, I don't know anything about Ancient Greek (or modern Greek for that matter) but I'm assuming the above definition is correct. Does anyone know enough about the language to confirm?

    May 1, 2011

  • Thanks ruzuzu!

Cake especially is much appreciated. It always has a special place in my ♥.

    April 30, 2011

  • Should have been.

    Hah!

    April 30, 2011

  • Hey! How did flampoint make it onto this list?

    April 29, 2011

  • Rainwater?

    Really?

    April 29, 2011

  • Oh well. The more tea for me, I suppose.

    Shame he took the fufluns.

    April 28, 2011

  • 'Location: The West'

I'm sure by that you mean the Wild West. You're the first real cowboy I've ever met! I'm so excited! Can I have your autograph?

    April 28, 2011

  • *waltzes in*

    *helps self to snack*

And how do you do ruzuzu?

*sips tea with pinky in the air*

    April 28, 2011

  • Bilby's word is quite possibly the funniest of them all.

    April 27, 2011

  • Um... because it's possible?

No reason really. I just... kinda liked it.

    :)

    April 27, 2011

  • Thief!

    April 27, 2011

  • Haha! Whoops!

    I fixed it.

    April 27, 2011

  • Hey! Did Vanderpink's secrecy rub off on you?

Edit: Not that I'm blaming you of course, with the backdrop of 'Identify the Wordienik'.

    April 26, 2011

  • Alrighty! Here we go then...

    bilby- hidelugged

    blafferty- prodigal

    chained_bear- heartstringsplucker

    dontcry- tear-resistant

    erinmckean- calepinerienne

    Wordplayer- greenhorn

    yarb- mortsafe

Thank goodness for the edit button.

    April 26, 2011

  • Spontaneity of life.

    How about

    ?

It pretty much sums up what I see in this list. No red-herrings about that. Sorry about the language though.

    ; )

    April 26, 2011

  • *drops line*

    Haha ruzuzu! I beat you!

    *cue evil laugh*

Edit: Wait a second- there aren't actually any tigers... are there?

I thought I just secured myself the job of a lifetime!!

    *flees from vanderpink*

    April 25, 2011

  • 4 sleeps now!

    April 25, 2011

  • It's finally here!

    April 25, 2011

  • The Emerald City?!

    Good work!

    April 24, 2011

  • How many sleeps do we have left?

    April 24, 2011

  • Still lovin' it!

    April 24, 2011

  • Happy Easter everyone! (for tomorrow for those of you still in Saturday. Geez time zones!)

    :D

    April 23, 2011

  • nostalgia heard in this song.

    April 23, 2011

  • Yeah- same thing happened to me.

    :)

    April 23, 2011

  • The comments go on the list like in the previous games.

    April 23, 2011

  • How cheerful.

    April 23, 2011

  • Hahaha! Misread the title as 'What's On Your Wordnik Desk?'.

    April 23, 2011

  • *hides in corner with party-hat*

    April 23, 2011

  • Maybe a lollie-bag at the end of the party.

Oh boy... this is even harder than I expected.

*leaves for a siesta in dontcry's peonies*

    One less sleep for me.

Edit: Incidentally, I am actually very tired but now I couldn't possibly sleep for fear of dreaming about spreadsheets.

    April 23, 2011

  • Do we get prizes for trying?

    *hopeful grin*

    April 23, 2011

  • *scream*

    April 22, 2011

  • Wait a minute- if we're meant to submit answers by posting a comment, doesn't that mean everyone will be able to see?

    April 22, 2011

  • Well at least you're not alone ruzuzu!

    April 22, 2011

  • Haha!

    April 21, 2011

  • Personally I like wordienikostack. The 'o' adds an extra dimension.

    April 21, 2011

  • I think we need a good party round about now to celebrate barbarous words. Who's with me? I guarantee plenty of phony umbrage, and fufluns. Maybe even some cupcakes with hyphens.

    I'll meet you over here.

    April 20, 2011

  • I have never before missed so much in 4 hours.

English isn't a language that follows rules as rigid as thsoe of Latin or classical Greek or even more modern languages like Italian and Spanish. The variety and spontaneity is what makes English such a special and unique language. I'm personally a big fan of it.

I think this video sums things up nicely.

    April 20, 2011

  • I'll drink to that!

Then bilby can wash my glass with his dishes.

    UP WITH BARBARISMS

    April 20, 2011

  • Smells like spam.

    April 20, 2011

  • What a special word!

    April 19, 2011

  • *peeks timidly*

    *is angry with self*

    April 19, 2011

  • Big Heart!

    April 19, 2011

  • You know... we haven't had a group hug in quite a long time.

What better place to initiate one than on the bottom of Identify the Wordienik?

    *hug*

    April 19, 2011

  • Does anyone know why Brits use -re while Americans use -er? Surely it's not arbitrary. And similarly, how about -ise and -ize?

    April 19, 2011

  • Forgive my ignorance, but I'm rather curious... who is the Goddess that you mention in your 'about me'?

    April 18, 2011

  • *munch munch*

    Brilliant!

    You're an excellent baker reesetee!

    April 17, 2011

  • Mmmmmmm. Thanks.

Could do with a candle on top though.

    And maybe some sprinkles too.

    April 17, 2011

  • April 17, 2011

  • Happy Birthday!

    :)

(though from Australia it's rather belated I think)

    April 17, 2011

  • Unprepared is an understatement. Can I join this club?

    *nibbles a cupcake*

    April 17, 2011

  • WooHoo! A creative celebration of birds here

    April 15, 2011

  • Is this some sort of spam?

    April 15, 2011

  • chumming

    April 14, 2011

  • Love the list description!

That poor guy though... have to feel sorry for people who are too hip for their own good. I know the pains of being too cool. I'm always in my jumper (or a coat if the occasion arises to look more hip).

    April 14, 2011

  • The New Testament?

    April 14, 2011

  • Bwahahahaha! You're so funny big-ears!! :D

I'm not really a herby sort of person I have to admit (sorry yarb). Let's just say I'm not going to bother going out of my way for coriander but if it happens to cross my path (which is fairly unlikely) I'll give it a go. That way I can stay in no-man's land for a while.

    April 14, 2011

  • *flinch*

    April 14, 2011

  • Um... that's coriander, right? I actually haven't had that much experience with the stuff but it is stirring something in my distant memory. Would you recommend it?

    April 14, 2011

  • Gotta love that game.

    April 14, 2011

  • How about brills?

Edit: and staupings- the footprints of a cow or horse.

    April 14, 2011

  • Woah! The randomness is killing me! ;-)

    April 13, 2011

  • And why sir? Isn't that rather sexist?

    The poor women out there...

    April 13, 2011

  • retroliteral?

    April 10, 2011

  • A test for what?

    Can I take it?

    April 8, 2011

  • Hah!

    April 5, 2011

  • Pink Lady!

    April 5, 2011

  • exponentially

    April 4, 2011

  • Hey- just a question that popped into my head when I was reading some old comments: Do you like Milo?

    As in, this Milo?

I don't know if you get that a lot around here and I'm just missing something... but it really got me wonderin'. :)

    April 4, 2011

  • I wanna play too!

I'm just bursting from my office chair in excitement.

    ;-)

    April 3, 2011

  • I like ptero's suggestion of the tagline. But perhaps linguaphiles or the like instead of 'word community', so it doesn't sound so stilted...?

    April 3, 2011

  • Strange article too.

    April 2, 2011

  • In three words:

    bunnies, rainbows (and) happiness

    April 2, 2011

  • Well, you did until you wrote that one.

    ; )

    March 31, 2011

  • If italic means (according to Century Dictionary): '(lowercase or cap.) Of Italian origin: designating a style of printingtypes the lines of which slope toward the right', then what's the name given to writing that slopes to the left?

    March 29, 2011

  • *slinks away to watch havoc from crystal ball*

    March 26, 2011

  • Awesome list!

    :)

    March 26, 2011

  • Haha! And you thought fufluns could hurt me??

*disposes of fairy godmother (sorry h.)*

    I AM A FUFLUN!

    *shape-shifts*

    Fee Fi Fo Fum...

    March 25, 2011

  • *grabs h. and holds knife to throat*

You will eat that avocado ruzuzu! If you don't, your fairy godmother will DIE!

    March 25, 2011

  • MWAHAHAHAHAHA!

    *vanishes in dust and smoke*

*watches ruzuzu in a crystal ball from a far off tower*

    March 24, 2011

  • Haha! I agree, and I'm surprised I haven't come across it before.

    March 24, 2011

  • Not when it looks like spam.

    March 24, 2011

  • >: )

Where's your handsome prince now, princess?

    March 24, 2011

  • Hey- Ruzuzu!

I have plenty of avocados over here. Would you fancy a bite?

    March 23, 2011

  • Is that quote meant to be funny?

    Or stupid?

Because it's certainly not the former.

    March 22, 2011

  • Sozzy. If you need any extra help, I'll be around the corner of the Earth.

    March 16, 2011

  • Why???

    March 16, 2011

  • Goldmine!

    :D

    March 10, 2011

  • I love ants. They're such incredible little things.

    March 10, 2011

  • I remember in the early days of my schooling we learnt to use brang instead of brought in a certain tense, but I can't seem to recall what that tense was. Comparing both words on Wordnik (where else would I go?? ;-) ) I can only find that brang is 'dialect, colloquial, informal'...

    March 1, 2011

  • Woah! For a fleeting second that dried fruit looked like gummy bears.

    February 26, 2011

  • Isn't that a croissant? (forgive the ignorance)

Anyway, in my mind, a Cornetto will always be a type of ice-cream cone.

    February 22, 2011

  • But 'Community'? Really? Couldn't it be at least a little creative?

Will newcomers really find a page full of comments on different words easier to understand because it says 'community'?

    February 20, 2011

  • 'Community' sounds sort of cold to me. The Zeitgeist heading was more Wordie/Wordnik-like. I didn't even know an imperative existed for changing the name.

    February 19, 2011

  • *hovers behind the refreshment pouches*

You're all going to be sticky and yuck...

    February 18, 2011

I think 'Refresh yourself?' would be the politest way to put it.

    What do you call them?

    February 15, 2011

  • I exclusively use bubbler, which may (or may not, mind you) be a little childish, but I have never actually heard anyone say 'drinking/ water fountain' except on the screens or in print.

  • Which would you prefer, my furry friend: two pies or two fufluns in each ear? Or maybe one of each?

    February 3, 2011

  • Wait! Have these fufluns instead. I am rather fond of pies and would hate to see them in a marsupial's ears.

No reason really. I just... kinda liked it.

    April 27, 2011

  • Now I'm confused. Why does "PossibleUnderscore" display as "Punderscore Underscore"?

    April 27, 2011

  • Duly noted.

  • Patented 3-Step Delectation:

    1. Chop coriander finely.

    2. Sprinkle with salt and leave overnight.

    3. Put in the bin.

You will henceforth be completely safe from ingesting the most hideous herb of howling horrendousness known to humankind.

  • apoplectic

    April 30, 2010

  • Oh, great. What a relief. :-)

    April 13, 2010

  • Me, too; Firefox 3.5.9 it seems (click “Help” and then “About Mozilla Firefox”) but I still can’t reproduce the problem. I have, however, noticed that the width of the table I have to use—unfortunately, for CSS is filtered out—is automatically set to 600 px, while its container only has a width of 450 px. Since, as I said, CSS is filtered out, I can’t do anything about it, but I was able to reduce the width of the table to the same 450 px by assigning it the class of the surrounding container. This actually shouldn’t fix the problem, but it’s all I can think of right now. So the white expanse is still there?

    April 12, 2010

  • Firefox. If there are any more details, I don't know them. ;-)

    April 8, 2010

  • Strangest thing. What browser are you using?

    April 8, 2010

  • Well, I pride myself on not having a “least favorite word”, and most of the things I am and I’m seeking start with a vowel sound (except “perfectionist”). Besides, while last time I checked it was still possible to sneak in arbitrary values, it had to be repeated with every update of the profile—that wasn’t convenient enough for me.

    April 8, 2010

  • Hi-ho! Look who popped in for a visit!! :)

All this use of correct grammar intimidates me!!!

    April 4, 2010

  • Hi pu, profile comments will go back to there full length soon, possibly tonight.
