Hello Prolagus.
-
Just look in the █████--it should be right there.
-
I █████ you.
-
Thank you, Pro! I was thinking of you recently when I found myself looking through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_trees. (Also, I had to explain casu marzu to someone recently.) <3 <3 I spelled casu marzu wrong just now, but it made me see that two of my less-than-threes were missing. Are they here now? Oh! They're not! I forgot about our secret way of sending messages!!!! <3
-
How's life in █████?
-
Thanks, I should have checked.
-
Oh, and brackets around "Zeitmunity," please.
-
I'm glad you visit often. :-)
We could just start up some new threads--have you come across any interesting words lately? (You are good at finding ones that are iroquoisy.)
-
I less than three you.
-
Guys! You should really <3'limit how many messages you send. I think Wordnik combines multiples into one email notification to' be kind.

When I think of you, I think cu<3'ltivated and thoroughly pleasa'nt.

Hi! I hope your Friday 13th was <3' not in the least bit' unlucky.

I wrote something like "it would be easier to (heart) you back if it didn't take me 5 minutes just to find the comment section"
-
Where? Which part?

This is NOT what I wrote!

It would be easier to <3 you back, if it didn't take 5 minutes to find the "comments for" section...

Pro, for your question about comments on tags, try writing Erin directly by email (erin (at) wordnik.com) -- if you haven't already.
-
Pro, I just went to my own profile and changed my preferences in order to hide my lookups from "the public." The first time it didn't take, but the second time it did.
-
Prolagus I love you so. Every day I spend millions of hours thinking about you. Please say you'll marry me.
-
:-)
-
Thank you for your kind comments.
At SUNY, you would have a different link to OED.
-
Thanks for the input; I updated zeke.sikelianos.com
-
Maybe you were thinking about my Geek Culture list?
-
Thanks, Pro. I do poke my nose in from time to time. Hope you're doing well.
-
Thanks pro--will check out the Twitter link thing tonight.
-
Thanks much for those bug reports, they were super userful--the loop bug and profile link on mobile should be fixed.
-
Just fixed the mobile login issue, I think--let me know if it's still giving you trouble.
-
Hi Pro, no, absolutely not--I'm sorry I haven't been more responsive. A series of the issues you reported fell into the bermuda triangle zone where they weren't absolute showstoppers, nor were they two minute fixes, so I made a mental note to get to them and have been slow about it.
Though coincidentally, I'm moving some new stuff into production later tonight, including fixes for a handful of the things you've mentioned recently. The mislabeled link when comments appear on word pages is fixed, and most embedded video should start working again too--we upgraded some internal components, and the new versions had stricter embedding policies, which I've adjusted.
-
Mine go unanswered. For months. Probably forever. And bilbies don't live a long time in captivity.
Edit: 6 months. I realise I may be guilty of the odd nonce comment that doesn't require responding, but there are serious suggestions that have been sitting there for 6 months.
-
Yes. You are.
-
You are adorable.
-
Howdy do to you, too. :-)
Have you had anything exciting for breakfast lately?

Hi biocon, none of your links can be used outside your institution since your URLs contain proxygsu-way1.galileo.usg.edu.
You should probably have a look and see if there is any way to get a link without the proxy thingamajig, so that people with a personal subscription or connecting through a different institution can use it too - unless of course you meant to make it a link for Waycross College users only.

Prolagus commented on the word new interface
Hi everybody,
In the end I decided not to review the new interface, as I said I would on July 22. You can read all my comments on this page and on the feedback page (if it is ever restored). Almost four weeks after the "ten-day" promise, the website shows exactly the same bugs and a few more.
For instance, now that word pages are not split into subpages (such as word/comments, word/pronunciations etc.), why is the large-print word itself a link? It doesn't link to anything but itself.
Here I could add something vaguely bitter about what happened to the community and the website and the people behind it etc etc, but I don't have anything new to say. You can look at most of my recent comments and read them.

Exactly. If I want to list, say, the best foods I have ever eaten, and sort them by yumminess, right now I would have to create it off-site and then add the entries when the list is complete, or delete most entries every time I realize there is something I had forgotten.

Prolagus commented on the word new interface
That's because that page is only for Wordies, not for Wordniks, according to what they stated shortly after the merge. They would rather have users email them - which I never do, since I want the others to be aware of what is being discussed.
And this brings us back to the social experience issue.
Ever wondered why users who comment the most (i.e. participate the most in the community) are not featured on the "community" page?
July 19, 2011
Prolagus commented on the word new interface
Looking forward to your being back and answering my messages, Erin. Thank you.
July 19, 2011
Prolagus commented on the word new interface
Here is, in a few words, what happened. Wordie was bought by the Wordnik people because they liked the idea of users listing and "favoriting" words. They weren't interested in the social aspect. Over time, this has become more and more obvious, until the new interface arrived and simply put the comments and other social elements at the bottom of the page as a curiosity (and that is why comments share the bottom with the Twitter mentions). The mobile version doesn't have comments at all.
I have a request for you Wordnik guys: if it is true that you care about us, and yet you can't meet our needs and preferences on Wordnik.com, why not just give us a parallel space on the web, I don't know, wordie.wordnik.com fully dedicated to the social experience? It could simply use the Wordnik API (whatever that is) and use the information from the main website, without lowering the quality of your online reference website.
In other words: bring back Wordie for us troublemaking weirdos and keep Wordnik for students and teachers.
July 18, 2011
Prolagus commented on the word new interface
What frogapplause said. I don't even know if I care that much anymore.

Prolagus commented on the word new interface
Edit: my comments sounds passive-aggressive, and I apologize. It wasn't sarcasm - I thought it could be just me, but apparently it's not. There is something wrong with this site - unless your goal is only to make it a reference tool, of course.
July 9, 2011

A reduction of the activity of a website after a revamping is probably physiological, but after 3 weeks of new interface the "community" page shows comments that are 48 hour old.

This is, to be generous, a beta version.
So why do all users have to use it? I would have been happy to be a tester — I always do it for ShutterCal and I love you even more than them.
Edit:
Rude-sounding or not, I'm sorry but I agree with bilby. We loved Wordie and sooner or later accepted Wordnik as its succedaneum, but we (I) have a feeling that our (my) feedback is of little importance, if any. We write comments and tips on the feedback page as we used to do on bugs and features, but those comments mostly go unread or forgotten, or at least this is what it seems. And I'm not saying that everything I suggest or report is interesting - but at least I would like to have the feeling that somebody cares, which I'm not sure about.
Again, "sorry if I sound rude". But compared to the feedback users usually give on other sites (e.g. #twitterfail hashtag), ours has a constructive component at least...

The "loop" bug disappears, but when I visit, say, my profile page (mobile version) and I select "View this page on regular Wordnik", I am redirected to www.wordnik.com instead of http://www.wordnik.com/people/Prolagus.
It kind of reminds me of this comic strip.

Thanks! I actually still have some trouble. Login now works (I had to empty cache and delete cookies), but:
- when I visit wordnik mobile, and I click "View this page on regular Wordnik", I can't access the "less mobile version" as The Onion calls it but I end up in a loop instead;
- when I try to visit a user page, I am still being redirected to the mobile version, which creates a broken link such as m.wordnik.com/p/
Only permanently blocking the mobile version works.
Thanks for checking that.

Prolagus commented on the word fisher
1) It is interesting to compare the article below with this 2011 blog post by mammal zoologist Roland Kays.
2) Etymology (for the animal):
The name implies a diet of fish yet it seldom dines on aquatic organisms. Early Dutch settlers noted its similarity to the European polecat (Mustela putorius). Fitchet is a name derived from the Dutch word visse which means 'nasty'. In the French language, the pelt of a polecat is called fiche or fichet.

Euphonic vowels are common in many languages and it seems to me that English is not an exception. In Japanese, Nihon becomes "Nippon" for ease of pronunciation, and hirakana becomes "hiragana" for similar reasons. Same in Italian.

The American Heritage Dictionary definition above is misleading and ultimately incorrect, in that it assumes that only eukaryotic nuclear DNA (the one that forms chromosomes) is the study object of genomics - therefore excluding mitochondrial, chloroplast, prokaryotic, and viral DNA genomes.

The ecological environment in the ecological niche model cells will be separated in two classes of variables: first, those that affect the fitness, but on which the species has no impact. Hutchinson (1978) called these variables scenopoetic, for the Greek roots of “setting the scene”. ... Obvious examples of scenopoetic variables are climatic and topographic variables.

A South African friend of mine uses also in a different way than any other native English speaker I have ever talked to: at the end of a sentence, where most English speakers would use "too" or "as well".
e.g. I would like to come out for dinner also (where 'also' refers to the speaker)
Does anybody know if it is a South African thing?
