  • In the event of a tie, 'zuzu, I propose a playoff. I will ask all losing entrants who want to help in the playoff to select a word that they consider applies to/describes each tied wordnik, one for each of them.

The tied wordniks will have a couple of days or so to match these words with all tied wordniks, including themselves.

Any further ties can be played off in the same manner until we have a winner.

Hope that explains what I'm trying to communicate. And also, now I've thought of that, I rather hope we'll have a tie!

(Or we could just count the number of letters in the words that they got right in the first place.)

  • You may like to know that when the time for entries is notified there will be a few hours notice. At the moment that the game ends I will take a print of this page and that will be the version used for assessing the results.

    April 26, 2011

  • No, no 'ferty - I don't believe that wordnik would have an edit button for cheating ;-} - it's for correcting errors, even deliberate ones, and revising things for the better.

  • Dare you wear this to work?

    April 23, 2011

  • What a wonderful off-the-wall word for such a milestone. Dah dah Dah Daaaah! I'll be checking my parsnips this weekend for signs of Easter

    bunniculastriation. Hah.

  • What, AND seven sleepless siestas?

    April 23, 2011

  • Gosh, 'gus! An ID the'nik app!

    April 23, 2011

  • Perhaps, on reflection, 'tisn't such a good idea to comment too much on how you came to your conclusions when you submit. You might give your rivals clues about others they hadn't had of their own.

Let's say we allow two or three days after the game closes, and before the results are announced, for those sort of comments - mmmm - could foster an interesting discussion.

    April 23, 2011

  • I know.

Prolagus, starting now, let me know when you've woken up for the seventh time.

    April 23, 2011

  • I hear you, 'cry.

I understand that different time zones have different numbers of sleeps, so 7 is an at least number. If you do siesta, it'll be at least 14. If you porchdoze twice daily, it'll be at least 21 sleeps. If you have sleep apnea, like me, it'll be at least zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    April 23, 2011

  • Sharp as tennis balls you are, 'bl'underscore. Now, doesn't that make it edgy? 'twas ever thus, though. Perhaps see previous games.

    April 22, 2011

  • Suggest sharpening wits about now. And sharpening cursors.

    April 22, 2011

  • So the game starts.

And anyone with a Wordnik account can join in.

The aim is for you to identify Wordniks based upon a single word that they have chosen that they consider applies to/describes them.

The Wordniks you must identify with the words in the above list are:

    bilby

    blafferty

    chained_bear

    dontcry

    erinmckean

    fbharjo

    frindley

    frogapplause

    gangerh

    hernesheir

    mollusque

    oroboros

    PossibleUnderscore

    Prolagus

    pterodactyl

    reesetee

    ruzuzu

    seanahan

    sionnach

    Wordnicolina

    Wordplayer

    yarb

Each of the above-listed Wordniks has confidentially emailed me their chosen word which now appears in this list.

Please enter the competition by submitting a comment in which you link the Wordnik with their identifying word. You may also discuss the reasoning behind your choices if you wish.

Yes, I know there are more words in the list than there are entrants. They’re called cred herrings. And some are less cred than others. Hah!

Be thankful that I didn’t throw a cred herring into the list of entrants – I did consider it.

Remember there’s a prize for the most correct matches!

Note: you do not have to be listed as a Wordnik-to-be-identified to enter. Anyone with a Wordnik account can join in. Just go right ahead!

You have at least 7 sleeps before a closing soon warning but you may post your solution as soon as you wish.

    Any questions?

    April 22, 2011

  • ID the'nik is now closed to entries.

    April 22, 2011

    April 21, 2011

  • Don't lick too many - I was once told there's a calorie on the back of every one.

    April 21, 2011

  • Suggest sharpening pencils about now.

    April 21, 2011

  • Just room for one more contestant. Not much sleeping before battle commences.

    April 20, 2011

  • ice licker

    April 20, 2011

  • Me neither

    April 17, 2011

  • A word of warning if you're going to take part at this stage . . . . do not comment on your intentions anywhere on this site as most of the words submitted have been published and the sharper participants will pick up on the fact that your word is in the last few listed.

    April 17, 2011

  • Still room for two maybe three more entrants.

To take part you simply choose a word that you feel applies to/describes you and confidentially submit it to me for me to post anonymously on this list. Then, when I feel we have enough entries, I publish the Wordnik names of all entrants. Then everyone gets a few days to match up the submitted words with the Wordnik.

There is a prize to go along with the breathtaking honour of winning.

See the Identify the Wordienik list page for more details.

It has a Tree Preservation Order on it, which means that it cannot even be pruned without Local Authority permission.

Sadly, I am currently discussing the felling of it with the the powers that be as it is suffering from Bleeding Canker, which will eventually kill it off. Meanwhile, it is becoming prone to shedding limbs, and is therefore a danger.

The disease is sweeping the UK having moved over from Continental Europe.

A huge proportion of the horse-chestnut tree population of the UK is being lost to the disease.

  • Hi, bilby. I was run out yesterday. My batting partner off-drove viciously and the bowler tried very hard to get out of the way but the ball hit him on the shoulder, for heaven's sake, and deflected down to dislodge the bails at my end, with me backing up for the run. Hah! How unlucky is that? Don't suppose you'll have much sympathy for me after today's T20 Final, though. :-)

(Showing up on Zeitgeist as, for instance, 'on pongsomespammer's profile, pongsomespammer said').

I suspect that genuine wordnik joiners do not do this until after some time and after some other activity , and probably after another wordnik has posted to their profile comments.

If this is indeed true, is there some way of using this fact to immediately filter out these spammers?

    January 29, 2010

    January 17, 2010

  • Hi, 'cry. Just wanted to drop by while you're profilic. I note that you 'nunced minute silence but it's not on your Pronunciations list over to the right. Is this Mike trying to look clever? If so, he really is taking his name in vain.

    BTW your porchnunciations become you.

    January 17, 2010

  • OK, 'cry, I'm flying in by jelicopter. I've brought the raspberry one 'cause it sounds worse. I've recce'd both of your porches, and I'll be coming in between the two potted impatient plants. We have no 'nuncianas today...

Wow! I think we're in for a resounding success!

    January 16, 2010

    January 15, 2010

  • I'm told that my captivators still hold the pronuncistation and just won't listen to our Mike. He reckons he heard one of their speakers pronounce that they are about to double up with a whirlygiggle of their own, in a very disarming manner, and try to spoil everyone's oozey pubmachine fun.

  • If only I could get to my lists. Maybe that's what they're after. Perhaps the king of the johngle has hidden them for safety. I do have a contingency flan. So I won't go hungry. Quickly - launch the helicopterodactyls and the helicopter funships! Call chained_bear - she's got the keys to the Arsenal for Civil Defunse. The wonder that is Wordie must be saved!

    January 13, 2010

  • You know when you do something like push a button or flick a switch and at exactly that moment something else goes off? An example is you turn on a light and the doorbell rings. Or, as just happened to me, I tapped the glidepad on my laptop to close a window, and the alarm clock on the other side of the room went off. Does anyoone know of a word for this specific type of co-incidence?

    January 12, 2010

  • I'd like to give you my word on that, but I can't quite get my tongue round it.

I respect your motives and reasoning. I actually enjoyed Wordnik's concept, thought I could slip a link or two there.

What can I say, I think it deserves this. Lesson learned.

    Enjoy the week,

    Hi

You have just spammed on wordnik.com and have probably alienated 29,177 members. Marketing statistics show that each one will likely tell 12 others. You have therefore reduced your marketplace by over one third of a million people!

Happily, though, because you spammed for free, it cost you absolutely nothing to lose all of this potential custom.

  • GH finds JM's frequent dump of comments unattractive. He knows he'd find them all appealing in bite sizes, like one every now and then. That would allow the dimension necessary to fully savour and appreciate each pearl. But then JM isn't putting them here for GH.

  • Gangerh,

We've discovered two ways to get in touch with other word*i*s. The first way is to write a comment on one of their lists. The second is to go to their "dashboard" (or profile page), scroll down past all of their recent comments, and look for the orange "comments for..." box about halfway down the page.

  • Your clever, amusing comments over on oobleck have gotten you a nomination for creating a new list. We'd love to see more letter parts.

  • I would be honored if you added the first word to my STF dominoes list.

  • You cannot escape the charge that you have previously engaged in the amazing pastime that is IDENTIFY THE WORDIE.

You are therefore prime target material for inviting to IDENTIFY THE WORDIENIK.

The whole of the bit of Wordnik that joins in on this would be truly honoured should you participate this time round.

Easily find the right page right now because it is currently the most commented on list shown on the Community page.

    February 14, 2011

  • Hah! Ta, 'zuzu!.

Yes a list would do it but that relies on people knowing it exists and going to it. I was thinking it might be better served as a Zeitgeist page feature or some such.

  • I've just subscribed to your "Sweet Tooth Fairy of the Day." (Yay!)

  • Actually PU, there's no real rule about where you reply. Everyone decides for themselves where they will carry on their conversations and most of us seem to chage our minds pretty regularly.

And maybe you should put off waiting for that comment for a few days, hmm? Don't want to seem too motivated or anything. Sit back, relax.

    July 29, 2009

  • Hey gangerh! I'm still waiting for the comment on procrastination, then I figured I'm not supposed to reply to you on my own profile. whoops, teehee...well, I'm still sorta new here.
