    March 3, 2007

  • That occurred to me, but I stifled the thought so as not to . . . pluke. SoG, you're full of grossness tonight.

  • I think it would be helpful to have a "comment search" function. Sometimes I want to find my way back to a particular comment or conversation, but just can't remember which word started all the hubbub.

Happy you violated all your rules too, uselessness.

    March 2, 2007

  • Accepted, mate. I just started feeling attacked. The internet is a tricky place and it's not always easy to know a person's tone of voice. I've pretty much had it with internet trolls/flamers - to the point where I rarely join forums anymore. Sorry if I'm a bit touchy.

I mean, is this list really hurting anyone? I got a kick out of the names in this book, that's all. What's with all the rancor?

    March 2, 2007

  • And here I thought this was a made up word in Salman Rushdie's "Haroun and the Sea of Stories." He did make up a bunch of words for that book, if I'm not mistaken. Someone must have a list.

    March 1, 2007

  • S. Korean currency.

    March 1, 2007

  • Oh, a Wordie challenge! I have a couple already posted on two of my lists. Maybe those'll get answered too.

    March 1, 2007

  • I use coinkydink on this site a lot.

But there must be a word for when a recently learned word begins popping up everywhere.

    March 1, 2007

  • sounds like a meat foetus.

    March 1, 2007

  • granted.

    March 1, 2007

    March 1, 2007

  • "I was in the pool!"

    March 1, 2007

  • Oh reesetee, I hate when anything which should be plural is referred to as product. In fact, product is going on my Rubbies list! Retail!

I have a friend who thinks I'm uptight over the whole comic book book thing. But I feel it gives the wrong impression. She might say, "I read 20 books this weekend," and I'm all impressed when what she meant was that she read 20 comics (sorry c_b, I refer to them as comics. Sunday comics are either comics or [funnies).

    March 1, 2007

  • Just the n and 0, reesetee. I guess those are common. I still haven't had any luck with the t and d.

    March 1, 2007

  • Does anyone else hate it when people refer to comic books just as books?

    March 1, 2007

  • thanks, U

    March 1, 2007

  • Look at this list. How many people do you think will be adding these words? And I want to add the names as they appeared in the book.

    March 1, 2007

  • How can you tell what number it is?

    March 1, 2007

  • Can anyone help me figure out how to add a word with superscripts d and t?

    March 1, 2007

  • Little Big Man

    February 28, 2007

  • Mao and Hu were not allowed in the subject lines of Microsoft's MSN Spaces. That's probably because China's leaders are considered "off limits," rather than controversial.

    February 28, 2007

  • Last I heard, China had 40,000 internet police scanning for improper internet use. When you hit upon a suspicious site, a happy, animated jingjing, or police officer, appears on your screen giving you a wag of the finger. If you're not careful, your door will get kicked down in the middle of the night.

In 2006, Yahoo helped China gain access to journalist Shi Tao's email. Tao was arrested and faces up to 10 years in prison.

For those of you in China who wish to surf anonymously and get around the firewall, you can use proxying tools (though at your own risk), such as anonymouse.org, Freenet, and TriangleBoy.

  • OH OH OH! How about, "Joseph, we're pregnant"?

    February 26, 2007

  • hmm. I wonder too. I use it to refer to guys too, but I know it can be used for either. . . . more on this later.

    February 26, 2007

  • Hats off to you, tomsteele, for what is the best Wordie comment I have read so far.

    February 26, 2007

  • Thanks najp. And I'm glad you like the list!

    February 26, 2007

  • That's my problem with LotR. I read the Hobbit and the first two Rings books and now I feel I have to read the third. It has been 5 years :)

    February 26, 2007

  • Thanks jennarenn. I should probably put an explanation under my list. See, my Nana didn't say that. Though I think she used to refer to my friends as boyfriends which just doesn't work like girls' girlfriends.

    February 25, 2007

  • Cut it out fartknocker!

    No way bunghole.

    February 25, 2007

  • Thanks chained_bear! I agree that dickhead does not necessarily impugn the morals of the subject; I think it can, though not in the same way slut does. Also, I don't use it to mean "one who thinks with his penis." Curious who uses it to mean exactly that.

I already listed cocksucker and am glad someone mentioned the issue of sex. I tend to think this refers more to a woman sucking than a gay man. I think I'll add suck my dick to the list, especially as I've heard women use the phrase. I know this list aims to level the playing field, but that phrase is bad enough coming from a guy and is even worse from a woman. C_B, wouldn't, then, sucking be a positive action? I think fuck it or fuck you fits with your point though.

Oh! I just remembered the notorious suck it from the WWF (WWE).

Again, I truly don't think of anything negative when I hear bitchin'. And there are various explanations of balls to the wall. A couple can be found here.

    February 25, 2007

  • How odd; I was just about to make a list like this myself.

    uselessness, why Americans only?

  • Bart Simpson's word. \kwee-jee-bo\ n. 1 : a bald, overweight, North American ape of below average intelligence

    February 25, 2007

  • Acceptable vulgarisms are the point! Granted, it makes a world of difference if the original meaning is completely obscured. It'll go in the appendix, but does little to balance the scales. Thanks.

    February 25, 2007

  • For all you bird lovers: cockyolly bird an expression meaning "dear little bird," used both about birds and as an endearment. It is a variant of dicky-bird.

    February 25, 2007

  • I had never heard that one pamelad. I looked it up and found this: Oddly, in British English it is not these days a vulgarism, or at least only a very mild one. It comes from one of several senses of cock, to bend at an angle, as in — for example — cocking a gun or turning up the brim of one’s headgear (so producing an old-time naval officer’s cocked hat).

The use of cock-up to mean a blunder or error was originally British military slang dating from the 1920s. The slang sense of cock clearly had a lot to do with its adoption, but this hasn’t stopped it being used in respectable publications, and modern British dictionaries mark it merely as informal or colloquial.

I'm including it in the appendix because I think what matters is how people conceive a word. balls to the wall, for instance, has nothing to do with testicles, but that's what a lot of people think of.

    February 25, 2007

  • Thanks, those are going in the Appendix!

    February 25, 2007

  • I like Wordie because it can help you wrap your mind around the way words are used. This list is similar to my "too many faggot scenes" list, only this issue has been plaguing me for a lot longer. I would never classify myself as a feminist, but would perhaps call myself a Post-Feminist.

I've noticed an unsettling tendency (in men and women) of using male-oriented terms to describe something positive, while female-oriented words describe the negative. There are exceptions, such as bitchin', but I think the exceptions are few. Maybe I'm wrong. Help me list and define words and phrases with a male bent. If there are exceptions, they'll go in a new list.

Also, I'd love to hear any insight you have as to why this occurs.

  • The boy's name Peter is pronounced PEE-ter. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "rock."

...therefore... it has been officially decided by the Pete Collective, that the collective noun for a group of people called Peter is: A Rockery

  • Axe Handles

    Gary Snyder

One afternoon the last week in April

Showing Kai how to throw a hatchet

One-half turn and it sticks in a stump.

    He recalls the hatchet-head

Without a handle, in the shop

And go gets it, and wants it for his own.

A broken-off axe handle behind the door

Is long enough for a hatchet,

We cut it to length and take it

    With the hatchet head

And working hatchet, to the wood block.

There I begin to shape the old handle

With the hatchet, and the phrase

    First learned from Ezra Pound

    Rings in my ears!

    "When making an axe handle

the pattern is not far off."

And I say this to Kai

    "Look: We'll shape the handle

    By checking the handle

Of the axe we cut with—"

And he sees. And I hear it again:

It's in Lu Ji's We Fu, fourth century

A.D. "Essay on Literature" - in the

    Preface: "In making the handle

    Of an axe

By cutting wood with an axe

The model is indeed near at hand."

    My teacher Shih-hsiang Chen

Translated that and taught it years ago

And I see: Pound was an axe,

Chen was an axe, I am an axe

And my son a handle, soon

    To be shaping again, model

    And tool, craft of culture,

    How we go on.

    February 21, 2007

  • Take it. I don't even want it anymore :(

However, it became Statuary Hall in Eighteen-Sixty-Four after the number of lawmakers grew too large to continue meeting there. Another name for Statuary Hall is the “Whisper Chamber.? This is because when a visitor stands at one end of the room, he or she can hear what people at the other end are saying. The shape of the room with its high ceiling creates this unusual movement of sound waves."

I am a homophobe." He did say those things, but he went on to be hateful. It made me wonder about people who have an actual phobia. I bet the media would jump on a person who admitted to having an honest-to-goodness phobia just the same as hate-speech.

the word homophobia has a comment to this effect.

  • I already have a list for "painful tags," but this particular prejudice has recently been discussed and I thought I'd start my own list. I'm always hesitant to list controversial terms for fear of backlash . . . but I'm also of the mind that ignoring something doesn't make it go away.

I'm not sure what would lessen the impact of certain slurs. I've said before that I don't think trying to make an insult yours (as with nigger and fag) works. I suppose it's just better education and, possibly, the dismissing of terms as jokey that would help, though plenty of people contend that that's dangerous in itself.

I'll leave you with a favorite line of mine from the movie "Velvet Goldmine." It goes something like this:

Everyone is bisexual; it's a freedom you can allow yourself or not.

    February 19, 2007

  • what an odd way to make a list.

  • oh excellent. reesetee calls people dildo :)

    February 19, 2007

  • palooka, I can understand your concern. Yesterday, I deleted my last comment from the Wordiehol list. There's a blurry line between mocking homophobes and sending the wrong message.

Still, there are certainly such things as gay words in most people's minds and that thinking is not reinforced solely by straight people. For instance, on gay pride day at my college, I remember that the gay population sidewalk-chalked fag everywhere. I didn't think that was very positive nor did it seem to help their situation. Much like black people trying to make the word nigger their own. It doesn't work because we're all still well aware of the negative origins.

  • The Bunlap people perform an ancient ritual called Gkol, in which men tie vines to their ankles and jump headfirst from platforms jutting out from a tower. The jumper's fall is broken by the vines, the other end of which is tied to the tower. A sloping surface of softened earth at the base of the tower provides some protection from injury in case of a broken vine, a vine of incorrect length, or a poor jump. Gkol inspired the modern sport of bungee jumping, though the vines used are far less elastic than bungee cords, and the Gkol jumper does not bounce up at the end of the fall. The Gkol legend says that in the village Bunlap a man called Tamalie had a quarrel with his wife and she ran away and climbed a banyan tree, (which some recall as line in an old and admired song) where she wrapped her ankles with liana vines. When Tamalie came up to her, the woman jumped from the tree and so did her husband not knowing what had his wife done. He died but the woman survived. The men of Bunlap were very impressed by this performance and they began to practise such jumps in case they got in a similar situation. This practice transformed into a ritual for rich yam harvest and also for proving manhood.

  • Let us now speak according to natural lights...Let us then examine this point, and say, "God is, or He is not." But to which side shall we incline? Reason can decide nothing here. There is an infinite chaos which separated us. A game is being played at the extremity of this infinite distance where heads or tails will turn up… Which will you choose then? Let us see. Since you must choose, let us see which interests you least. You have two things to lose, the true and the good; and two things to stake, your reason and your will, your knowledge and your happiness; and your nature has two things to shun, error and misery. Your reason is no more shocked in choosing one rather than the other, since you must of necessity choose. This is one point settled. But your happiness? Let us weigh the gain and the loss in wagering that God is. Let us estimate these two chances. If you gain, you gain all; if you lose, you lose nothing. Wager, then, without hesitation that He is.

  • Definitely open to suggestions, but this list is limited to those techno/treknobabbly words. I also only included those I feel are used a lot. There are websites out there with all the hundreds of words, but I didn't want to overdo it. I am, however, going to steal a lot of your suggestions for a new list of general Trek terms. Suggestion for a list title?

  • One of the more powerful words in the English language. I remember Robert Bly reading this Alden Nolan poem, pausing, and remarking on the use of the word ashamed.

Then there's the Sufjan Stevens song Romulus, in which he sings, "I was ashamed, I was ashamed of her." The narrator is talking about his mother and when he sings "of her," he can't muster any more than a whisper.
