  • Can I get out of the Panda suit and put c_b down now?

    February 5, 2010

  • Really?

    February 5, 2010

  • If anyone can actually muster the insanity to say any of these, please, please let us all know of your humiliation!! ;-)

    Hilarious list!

    February 5, 2010

  • You're so vain, obviously...

    February 5, 2010

  • How about a duet with the finches at a bridge Reese Tee?

    And I vote bilby manager.

    February 5, 2010

  • *deals* Nothing beats five-card umbrage. *deals*

Ok. Out of peanuts, and we've never had fried onions (boohoo!). Sorry. But we do have plenty of fufluns. In fact, we have fufluns in such abundance, you make take them at will. Enjoy.

    February 5, 2010

  • No, it was about me. You're so vain! I mean, you probably think that song is about you. Don't you? Don't you? Don't you?

    February 5, 2010

  • Can I play the zither?

    February 5, 2010

  • It really is pretty when you hear it. Thanks.

    February 5, 2010

  • Milo, I would very much like to hear you pronounce your name. Do you take requests??

    February 4, 2010

  • Basically, the greater the number of statements understood by the general public, the less expertised the 'statement-maker' is. Right?

    February 4, 2010

  • *deals*

And one for me, extra umbrage.

    February 4, 2010

  • Interestingly, pavlova and whipped cream are very nice together. We may both be right.

    February 4, 2010

  • I take umbrage at your umbrage and failure to accept the blatant truth. Dontcry won and that's the end of all of us.

    Another round anyone?

    February 4, 2010

  • I think clouds are very tasty, sort of light and fluffly like pavlova.

    February 4, 2010

  • Noooooo!Straight umbrage for me.

And on that matter, I may deal out some extra umbrage for all the other losers.

    February 4, 2010

  • It turns out the singer was vain. Wasn't she? etc.

    February 4, 2010

  • Could anyone offer an etymology for this word?

Edit: Apparantly it was originally a brand name, I think.

    February 3, 2010

  • But finding good spammers is easy.

    February 3, 2010

  • Call.

    February 3, 2010

  • But we are not a muse. Ever.

    February 3, 2010

  • I was thinking ruse, ruzu style.

    February 3, 2010

  • Everyone's just so vain.

    February 3, 2010

  • *flinch*

    February 3, 2010

  • :D

    February 3, 2010

  • Hah! Love this!

    February 2, 2010

  • And also very much like cutting spaghetti.

    February 2, 2010

  • Ack! So it did. How about reposting it?

    February 2, 2010

  • What?? Is the Santa Fox going? I'm a lot less poetic than ruzuzu and a lot less bilbyish than bilby, so can only settle for a really sincere and genuine: 'We wouldn't bear to see you go! Please stick around!!'

    :'(

Things could only possibly go uphhill from now anyway.

    : )

    February 2, 2010

  • Yes, very oddly so.

    February 1, 2010

  • *hurls chutney into deep void of self absorption so that it can never be retrieved again*

    So there!

    ; )

    February 1, 2010

  • Wanna share??

    *snatches chutney away*

There's no time for mercy! The world is ending! Unicorns are becoming evil! The sieve of Eratosthenes is failing!

    February 1, 2010

  • Unicorns turning evil? Or just plain disturbing like Charlie the Unicorn?

It could indeed be quite a tragedy if all unicorns turned out like him. I mean, unicorns are the very foundation of the 'My Little Pony' world of rainbows and fairies and leprechauns. (Incidentally, I am now convinced that all of the women who dance for Michael Flatley are fairies.)

  • From Genghis (a friend of Gangerh?) to Admetus are the cats from T.S. Eliot's: Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical: Cats.

From Peppo to Thomas O'Malley, are some of the cats ravaged from my memory of The Aristocats.

    February 1, 2010

  • *applause*

I'm blinded by your mathematical skill.

    February 1, 2010

  • jingle truck worked for me. Maybe you should try one more time.

    February 1, 2010

  • Oh... ok, thanks!

    February 1, 2010

  • How does OneLook work? I've never used it before.

    February 1, 2010

  • What an infliction! And to be your least favourite word too!

    February 1, 2010

  • The 66 marks are supposed to open speech, as far as I knew and 99 to close it. It looks a lot less awkward like that (but I suppose it also has a lot to do with what you were brought up with).

    February 1, 2010

  • Heh.

    :D

    January 31, 2010

  • Q. How do you know if your piano is going to be trouble?

    A. If it is a Kwai baby.

    January 31, 2010

  • I have to say, those two things are almost considered basics these days.

    January 31, 2010

  • I t-h-i-n-k- i-t l-o-o-k-s p-r-e-t-t-y.

    January 31, 2010

  • *Prays that one day these shirts will be manufactured for a Wordie/ Wordnik store soon*

Edit: *realises that doesn't make sense*

    January 31, 2010

  • Haha! I love all these links, but as funny as the Parody Inspiration was, I suddenly feel sorry for the 'little retard tv'.

    January 31, 2010

  • Co-incidentally, I just heard this song in the car a moment ago.

    January 31, 2010

  • Alex. The lion!!

    From the film Madagascar.

    January 30, 2010

  • The name of the sabre toothed tiger from Ice Age.

    January 30, 2010

  • Also from Rudyard Kipling's: the Jungle Book.

    January 30, 2010

  • The tiger from Kung Fu Panda.

    January 30, 2010

  • The cat from Pinocchio.

    January 30, 2010

  • Out of the gate and off for a walk went Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy and Hercules Morse as big as a horse...Bottomley Potts covered in spots...Muffin McLay like a bundle of hay...Bitzer Maloney all skinny and bony...Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum...when suddenly, out of the shadows they saw SCARFACE CLAW!!

-Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy, Lynlee Dodd

    January 30, 2010

  • I always thought he was cute.

    January 30, 2010

  • Garfield's ultimate rival.

    January 30, 2010

  • Also used as the name of Cinderella's cat.

    January 30, 2010

  • The name of the cat in Beatrix Potter's The Tailor of Gloucester

    January 30, 2010

  • The panther from Rudyard Kipling's: The Jungle Book.

    January 30, 2010

  • Also the cat in the film: Milo and Otis.

    January 30, 2010

  • Let me rephrase: Who in their right mind would buy something called Depleted Uranium Penetrator?

    ;-)

    January 30, 2010

  • Who would buy something called Depleted Uranium Penetrator anyway?

    January 30, 2010

  • What??

    *is completely outside*

    January 30, 2010

  • Sometimes, you sound vaguely like Richard Hammond.

    January 30, 2010

  • Mooo zoo.

    January 30, 2010

  • Hah, pantsful indeed!

Just imagine: "Excuse me sir, would you mind very much if I observed the manner in which you wear your trousers? May I be permitted to take a few measurements?"

    January 29, 2010

  • Gosh! I wonder how she collected those measurements!

    January 29, 2010

  • Couldn't they think of something at least a little bit more imaginative?

    January 28, 2010

  • I wonder why I've just favourited this?? ;-)

    January 28, 2010

  • Heh!

    (Love the movie too.)

    January 28, 2010

  • And the cheese.

    January 28, 2010

  • Jinx bilby!!

  • Sweet Tooth Fairy

    January 27, 2010

  • Funny list Pro! I like it!

    January 27, 2010

  • Clever cookie!

    January 27, 2010

  • So he's not joking about the jumpsuit? I thought if he wasn't lying, he was just kidding.

And I agree with what dontcry said. At least the guy's making an effort anyway, more than I can say about many modern artists.

    January 27, 2010

  • What happened to private notes?? Doesn't Wordnik allow them?

    January 25, 2010

  • Fairy!

    January 25, 2010

  • It doesn't sound that odd...in fact, it's nicely refined.

    January 23, 2010

  • I thought gulls v. buoys should be two serparate lists...? One for Buoys one for Gulls.

(Nice list idea by the way!)

    January 23, 2010

  • Heh. Very funny.

    January 22, 2010

  • If nudiustertian is the word for the day before yesterday, what is the word for the day after tomorrow?

    January 22, 2010

  • Did you know that your profile is on private?

    January 22, 2010

  • Haha Milo(srdenstvi, not Milo chocolate)! Well, that's what happens when you take the time to read chocolate wrappers.

*they mess up your mind...* ;-)

    What's Hershey's syrup?

    January 21, 2010

  • Well I can!

But don't go by the website...it really turns you off. The good thing with Milo is that it doesn't have to overly-sweet artificial taste that Nesquik does, but unlike Nesquik it will not disolve in cold milk.

(I can't believe you haven't heard of Milo!! I thought it was universal.)

    January 20, 2010

  • Twitter itself isn't so bad as long as it's not overused. I just cannot stand converting classics into tweets.

    January 20, 2010

  • Twitterature is one of the most pathetic and tragic and unoriginal publications of all time. It completely and utterly undermines the beauty of classical literature in every way, by changing the rich language into shallow and meaningless 'tweets' dotted with obscene words and phrases that can singularly destroy the personality of a character.

God only knows the purpose of this book, considering that it not only tells thousand-page works of art with a few characters, but also destroys vital character developments and gorgeous descriptions. It ruins the endings of the books and consequentially, people would be less inclined to read the original. Sure Twitterature is meant to be 'humourous' but it's just not funny to see such great literary works demoted to 140 character blots.

I could go on, but I won't. I'm getting sick just thinking about it.

    January 20, 2010

  • Could this belong on your "It Has a Name??" list reesetee?

    January 20, 2010

  • ???

    January 18, 2010

  • *whistles and says as airily as possible*

Good luck I suppose with your pecking attack on reesetee.

*ambles away still whistling and glancing over shoulder occasionally continuing vaguely*

There's nothing to worry about at all...

    January 18, 2010

  • Thanks for the cupcakes on peckable. In return favour, I might alert you that a certain gull may be plotting a certain attack on a certain somebody partially responsible for a certain becupcaking incident.

    January 18, 2010

  • I have always been fascinated by books about words and language and that list is a dream come true, considering that sad limitations prevent me from collecting my own.

    January 18, 2010

  • I know, right?

    January 18, 2010

  • *backs away, then runs from page*

    January 18, 2010

  • Thanks! I'll take a look.

    January 18, 2010

  • hah! You said it bilbybuns!

    January 18, 2010

  • Example?

    January 18, 2010

  • Why don't you make it?

    January 18, 2010

  • Is there a list somewhere? of why gulls are better, then why buoys are better?

    January 18, 2010

  • Hahaha! *loves*

    January 18, 2010

  • Reverse psychology?

    January 18, 2010

  • :D

    *fling, toss, hurl*

*manages to hit ruzuzu despite her valient attempts to escape*

    January 18, 2010

  • Woah...that just completed the nightmare of terminal burrowing.

    January 17, 2010

  • I certainly should hope not.

    *grotesquely exaggerated inflextion* Wanna bite?

    January 17, 2010

  • *nibbles cupcake delicately*

    Not to worry. I'll live.

    January 17, 2010

  • God have mercy on my poor soul!! If you're going to continue indulging in my discomfort I'm going to have a fit and leave this discussion herewith. Surely you cannot be that (forgive me) STUPID!!

You must know very well what I mean...

    January 17, 2010

  • I feel like a teenage schoolkid having a dirty conversation behind an open desk lid. I don't know what some of the suggestions meant, and I can't think of anything to rhyme with it either...

I'm sure you're all doing this to me on purpose.

How about, through which the baby emerges.

bilby: 'I wadded to tagalog but my bruvver wooded led me.' Hilarious!

    January 17, 2010

  • *flushes* Are you guys kidding with me? You do know what I'm talking about, don't you? You're not going to make me say it?

    January 17, 2010

  • Another question...how many dictionaries do you have, and in how many languages?

What fills up this entomological literature shelf of yours?

    January 17, 2010

  • Getting warmer...

    January 17, 2010

  • But let's not forget Mr. Pronunciation lurking in the background! I suspect that he's bribed or brainwashed or tortured Mike into these evil misdoings. We must not let either of them out of our sight.

    January 17, 2010

  • A 'beef drink' in a jar (not bottle, jar) with exactly the same colour scheme as vegemite.

    January 17, 2010

  • *scream!*

    January 17, 2010

  • psst...try psychedelicatessen.

    January 17, 2010

  • Yes, I admit, my distant relatives do include the unreceived scoundrel UnnecessaryDash and the notorious SupererogatoryHyphen. I'm sorry to be related to such definite punctuation marks but you can't choose family, can you?

    January 17, 2010

  • Ok ok, very funny. How about regions of the anatomy? You get it.

    January 17, 2010

  • I can't believe that would be very pleasant.

    January 16, 2010

  • I thought so...

    UMBRAGE!

    January 16, 2010

  • And you musn't leave out the vegemite virgin and gangerhkinesis.

    January 16, 2010

  • Your list seems to be shamfree!

    Edit: I demand real free!

Your list, Herne's heir, is sham-free.

    January 16, 2010

  • *humming*

    January 16, 2010

  • Goodness me, I think this horrendous occurence confirms Mr. Pronunciation's involvement! Poor, poor dontcry is going to pay for her happy moment with Mike.

    *over PA*

Send out the funships,chained_bearcraft carriers and helicopterodactyls we have another case on our hands. Make sure to fly the fbharjolly rogers high.

    January 16, 2010

  • Do we have a flag too?

    January 16, 2010

  • Hah!

But I take umbrage at not having enough sham-words to take umbrage at!

    January 16, 2010

  • My my my... uselessness made the list, he angered Mr. Pronunciation who has now destroyed our feature. Is the useless uselessness to blame?

    ;-)

    *cue dramatic music*

Edit: Wait, no, I take that back. (I forgot we all contributed to the list.)

    January 16, 2010

  • Can I demand real e from that shame?

    January 16, 2010

  • Atrocity! I demand realwow!

    January 16, 2010

  • Umbrage! I demand realpoo!

    January 16, 2010

  • Outrage! I demand a realrock!

    January 16, 2010

  • Ack, don't worry. It's nothing short of the 'Wordie Treatment' (should that be Wordienik Treatment now?). Just think twice before posting links to promote yourself. Try using Wordnik for what it was made for. (Then you'd see that we're not so bad.)

    : )

    January 16, 2010

  • Gosh! Indeed, you're right. Summon the troops!

    January 16, 2010

  • Would 'divine intervention sniper' work as a sweet tooth fairy, or false teen fairy?

    January 15, 2010

  • Instruments I already know: piano, recorder and organ.

    Other two: harp and harmonica

(and then follow all the other instruments like violins, pan flutes and drums etc... which I want to play.)

    January 15, 2010

  • Ah...bilby...you can never run from ruzuzu taunts!

    ;-)

    January 14, 2010

  • Good idea, maybe it will be!

    Actually, I was thinking harmonica.

    January 14, 2010

  • Yes, you were very lucky to survive. When your feeling more yourself, just give me the word and I'll bring ruzuzu and dontcry around for a chat. They helped with your survival. And yes, the doctor will be a spin doctor. (!) Meanwhile, just try and relax.

(dontcry, how about using a mini-torspeedo instead?)

    January 14, 2010

  • Do you really have a harp??

That's fantastic! If there were two other instruments I could learn, one would be the harp. : )

    January 14, 2010

  • Be careful doing that ruz... have you ever seen an angry frog rampage?

    January 14, 2010

  • You're in the Gangerhkinesis Hospital in Wordnik sweetie...now just lie still and the doctor will pop around soon. You've had quite a shock.

    January 14, 2010

  • Welcome back!

    January 14, 2010

  • So thorough mollusque! I take my hat off to you.

    January 13, 2010

  • I found some!

    Good luck lighting them.

And we'll send some medics over as soon as we can to deal with the injuries brought about by dontcry's torspeedos. Seems as though not everyone heard her sweet, enchanting voice!

    ;-)

    January 13, 2010

  • On second thoughts, I could swing by and pick you up in the latest helicopterodactyl model myself.

No sign of the funships. I think they've been shot down somewhere by the east coast.

    January 13, 2010

  • Geez you guys...I think you could do with a lifesaver 'round about now.

Want me to swing one your way?

    (Is it possible?)

    January 13, 2010

  • Are there actually names given to types of co-incidences?

    January 13, 2010

  • Hey mollusque- just a question...

You know I'm a great fan of that Panvocalics list, but you have to admit that some of the words there are pretty ludicrous, like counterpain or cotigulate or schizoneuran just to name a few. Are they all, really, legitimate words? or leaning towards the madeupical side?

    January 13, 2010

  • Um...maybe I'm mistaken along the line somewhere after reading what mollusque said, but I was always under the impression it meant...well...I'll just say ladies have it, men don't.

    ;-)

    January 13, 2010

  • I think gangerh has been kidnapped too!

    ;-)

    January 13, 2010

  • Hah! Actually, it's the Filipino language and while its spelling may look like a game (and a fun one at that), a pronunciation is here. (Do your best to ignore the suave American accent!)

    January 12, 2010

  • There's nothing like a good millymollypollywaffle with maple syrup in the morning!

(The best ones are made with love by bilby ;-) )

    January 12, 2010

  • You're not alone bilby.

    (I have Firefox.)

    January 12, 2010

  • Heh! That's probably right.

    January 12, 2010

  • What is the OneLook 'bookmarklet' that I've been hearning so much about? I tried John's instructions here, but I just got re-directed to I miss wordie.

What was supposed to happen/ what am I doing wrong?

    January 11, 2010

  • In Tagalog peck means something a little different...

    January 11, 2010

  • *applause*

    January 11, 2010

  • I like Oak milk.

And yaks' milk is pink. Naturally.

    January 9, 2010

  • Back from Singapore bilbycake?

    : )

    January 9, 2010

  • I am totally aghast! Mr. Pronunciation has really let us down this time. You better add it to the list Pro.

    January 9, 2010

  • Oh. I thought it was French for 'china collie': a little ornament you put on your mantlepiece.

    January 9, 2010

  • Yay!

    *loves*

    January 8, 2010

  • Ok! But I need help thinking of a List Description.

    January 8, 2010

  • Ha!

    January 7, 2010

  • Is there a list of 'must needs'?

    There should be.

    January 7, 2010

  • I was passing a toy store the other day and there were two types of barbies on display. They were identical, except one had blond hair, the other had brown. The price was also a little different, the blond one costing ten dollars more than her counterpart.

    January 7, 2010

  • That is so, so tragic.

    January 7, 2010

  • And boxers in boxes?

    January 7, 2010

  • I don't think there is a specific word......?

    January 5, 2010

  • I'm happy to hear that at least one person has use for the Twitter feed. As for me, it doesn't do me any good but it doesn't do me any harm either. (I also think the statistics are fascinating, though they're so specific I still have doubts on their accuracy.)

If anything, what annoys me the most are: firstly, the inability to delete comments but I assume that will come with time (?); secondly, the inability to delete entire lists. I have an awful memory and I cannot recall if this was a feature of YOW, but I'm pretty sure it is was. Finally, the difference maintained by words with capital letters. This makes having totally separate conversations on the same word possible and I find it just a tiny bit inconvenient. Also, the listing in the sidebar (the one that says first listed by etc.) is affected because for all you know, someone has listed the same words but with capital letters.

Otherwise, all is pretty well and good. Progressions still to be made--but can't you say that about everything?

    Nice link, telofy, thanks!

    January 4, 2010

  • The sort of person who, when being drowned by a known attacker, will still come up for that last desperate breath and cry, voice thick with sincerity and passion, "I lerve you!"

    January 3, 2010

  • ^^ (sympathetic grin)

    *luffs*

    January 3, 2010

  • If you're particularly sensitive, it also works with flipping a coin (or even playing Rummikub).

    January 3, 2010

  • I love Scrabble and I love this list!

    Keep it coming!

    :-)

    January 3, 2010

  • Fascinating. I must try that!

    ;-)

    January 3, 2010

  • The next day, at the usual hour, Marius took from his closet his new coat, new pantaloons, his new hat, and his new boots; he dressed himself in panoply complete, put on his gloves, prodigious prodigality, and went to the Luxembourg.

On the way, he met Courfeyrac, and pretended not to see him. Courfeyrac, on his return home, said to his friends: "I have just met Marius' new hat and coat, with Marius inside. Probably he was going to an examination. He looked stupid enough."

    -Les Miserables, Victor Hugo

    January 3, 2010

  • There is an extrememely amusing song by Jonathan Coulton, called Mandelbrot set. It is also a little helpful if you are not really a mathmetician.

Pathological monsters! cried the terrified mathematician

Every one of them is a splinter in my eye

I hate the Peano Space and the Koch Curve

I fear the Cantor Ternary Set

And the Sierpinski Gasket makes me want to cry

And a million miles away a butterfly flapped its wings

On a cold November day a man named Benoit Mandelbrot was born

His disdain for pure mathematics and his unique geometrical insights

Left him well equipped to face those demons down

He saw that infinite complexity could be described by simple rules

He used his giant brain to turn the game around

And he looked below the storm and saw a vision in his head

    A bulbous pointy form

He picked his pencil up and he wrote his secret down

Take a point called Z in the complex plane

    Let Z1 be Z squared plus C

    And Z2 is Z1 squared plus C

And Z3 is Z2 squared plus C and so on

If the series of Z's should always stay

Close to Z and never trend away

That point is in the Mandelbrot Set

Mandelbrot Set you're a Rorschach Test on fire

    You're a day-glo pterodactyl

You're a heart-shaped box of springs and wire

    You're one bad*** f******g fractal

And you're just in time to save the day

    Sweeping all our fears away

You can change the world in a tiny way.

    etc...

  • Poirot had a particular routine when opening his morning correspondence. He picked up each letter, scrutinised it carefully and neatly slit the envelope open with his paper-cutter. Its contents were perused and then placed in one of four piles beyond the chololate-pot. (Poirot always drank chocolate for breakfast - a revolting habit.)

  • I could be wrong...but isn't America coming out with bacon-flavoured jam?

    December 31, 2009

  • Uh...well...about that... I haven't started any of my new books, but started one of my old ones instead. However, because I've already read it, I've stopped. (I don't mind half-reading a book if I have read the complete story before, especially numerous times. It's all complete in my mind.) You see, I can't bear the thought of, firstly, starting one of my new books and having it split and secondly, boring myself out of my brains reading a book I know back to front.

  • Is cow tipping a sport or something?

    December 30, 2009

  • Ah...yes, the current president of France; the man who bears vague resemblance to Tony Shalhoub... I can remember his title, his appearance and even some of his words and actions but I always forget his name, regardless of how many times I repeat it in my mind, or write it, or say it.

    December 28, 2009

  • Ah..yes, I suppose I should. I try, I really do...

I'm going to start a book today, one that I won't possibly finish by December 31 and I'll see how I go.

    December 28, 2009

  • Maybe it's because my year is a straight vertical line of coloured circles and so when December-January hits, I have to travel up a whole years worth of space and I don't like having a book split over that.

(How on Earth do you wake up one day in the middle of the year and suddenly think it's 2010? Talent, my friend. You have some talent. ;-) )

    December 27, 2009

  • Yes, and I am positive that there must be someone who shares my sentiments.

    Anyone?

    December 27, 2009

  • When reading a book, I cannot read it from the end of December into the New Year. I can't read it over the transition of the years. I feel it tears the book in two so that it is, effectively, hanging in oblivion, not having been read in either time. To me, it's a disorder that must be avoided at ALL costs.

    Is it just my browser?

Edit: oh, did you happen to delete them, just when I entered a new one?

    December 22, 2009

  • Haha! Very sweet!

Reading this thread, I was surprised to see how this song was interpreted. I have never thought of it as dark or patronising before. It just seems...well...a song of hope?: looking to the future, in a way.

According to this source: There is a distinction between a Christmas carol and a Christmas song. A Christmas Carol has a fairly rapid, regular beat, which would, therefore, exclude a meandering, crooning song such as “White Christmas”.

    December 22, 2009

  • Ahh, well... we can't all be perfect...

    ;-)

    December 22, 2009

  • I don't know if my knowlege of birds (ficticious or not) is enough to fill a list, but I would certainly love to see one made! Would you?

    December 22, 2009

  • What do you think about ficticious birds, reesetee?

    December 21, 2009

  • A 'snipe' according to the new Pixar Film, Up, looks something like this.

    December 21, 2009

  • I positively adore this word when used as 'love'. But it really annoys me when people overuse it or use it for things they really don't luff deep down.

And I especially like it when someone's accent disallows them to properly pronounce 'love' and thus producing 'luff' instead.

    December 11, 2009

  • Briefly, in response to ththownse question, I'd like to point out that society is almost split when it comes to attitudes about homosexuals. Indeed, the world in general's almost split. Canada legalised homosexual marriages for example, though the rest of the world hasn't. What you have, is one part of society condemning homosexual behaviour, not, I think, for its 'vulgarity', but rather for the way that it defies the 'laws' of conventional marriage and sexual relations. However, there is a part of society that is all about acceptance and they fully support homosexual behaviour.

  • The saddest goodbye song is one of the most simple (of course, that's just my opinion).

    December 9, 2009

  • Thanks mark! :-) Feel free to contribute as many pronunciations on the list as you see fit. There are many awesome ones yet to be discovered (and made, no doubt).

    December 9, 2009

  • Ha! You're so negative. Try to think of it as...chocolate, or mince meat.

Edit: And it's a bunny, not a hamster. I made that mistake too.

Further edit: After Image searching 'Oolong bunny' maybe it's carrying a pancake.

    December 8, 2009

  • They already think that marky!

    ;-)

We love you bilby! Don't fret.

    December 7, 2009

  • I think so, bilby.

Personally, I prefer spaghetti, but I have great respect for ramen too. They are all welcome at the dinner table in my house! (or the breakfast, or lunch table too ) ;-)

    December 6, 2009

  • For ramen, it's all about slurping. No cutting, no twirrling, just slurping no matter how long, so it's important not to sit with a straight back for once.

    December 6, 2009

  • Congratulations on that crown frogapplause! Use it wisely... I liked your pronunciation. ;-) It really annoys me when people say pasta with a short 'a' sound. They make it sound like some sort of commercial marketing blah-di-blah.

Don't ask me why. It just is.

    December 5, 2009

  • Thank you John! I was going to comment about how disturbing they were, but I was running late for something.

    Say goodbye sirius.

    December 5, 2009

Edit: Well I've sort of warned you about it now...

    December 4, 2009

  • How do the statistics work on Wornik? Does someone count the number of times a word appears in the paper or something?

    Is it *gasp* madeupical?

    December 4, 2009

  • But that's exactly what it is!

    December 4, 2009

  • Hehehehe.

Spaghetti in garlic hotdog is supposedly very nice.

    December 4, 2009

  • :D

    December 4, 2009

  • Smooth. Not gooey like nutella, and not the sort or texture of peanut butter either. It almost blends in with the bread in a way that you don't even notice that you're eating it, except you feel that one side of the bread is rough and the other side is smooth.

And never, under any circumstances, refrigerate vegemite.

    December 4, 2009

  • 'Slightly' bitter plus two steps I'd say. If you are going to to lose your vegemite virginity, I suggest starting with a very thin spread with rather a lot of butter. If you start with too much, you end up hating it for life, which would be quite a shame.

  • Heh, I see. We do. And ! always eat their food shouting. It's terribly noisy, not to mention messy. Eating spaghetti is an experience always accompanied by many strange glances in my general direction.

I also have a habit of eating half a sandwich, then opening it up and eating the inside but that leaves me with plain bread which is very annoying. Surely you understand??

    December 3, 2009

  • Heh. You make me laugh.

I'll be sure to try that next time, though I imagine it will be so much harder than plunging.

  • Sure...

    December 3, 2009

  • oh.

    *feels small*

    But at least I'm Possible!

    *waves flag of bemusement*

    December 3, 2009

  • HA!

    *cues rotton tomatoes*

    or better yet

    *cues cupcakes*

    December 3, 2009

  • It's hilarious when you play them from top to bottom!

    choo choo twain

    choo choo twain

    CHOO. CHOO. TWAIN!

    December 3, 2009

  • How do you ensure only two or three strands get on your fork? Scrape them off the top then twirl? Do you twirl horizontally? Usually I plunge my fork into the middle of my bowl/plate and twirl vertically (which may or may not be considered 'uncivilized, oafish, and uncouth').

    December 3, 2009

  • Heeheehee. There's nothing like a few stereotypical jokes in the morning!

Edit: Wait, that sounds a bit mean.

    December 3, 2009

  • Heh.

    December 3, 2009

  • Of course it's all a play on cultural sterotypes (which by-the-way, I find fascinating and amusing though sometimes offensive).

I'm sorry, touched up on my research and I think that everyone knows now, that the Chinese did not invent spaghetti. I didn't think so, and I guess I'm right.

    December 2, 2009

  • Hang on, is gull wordie talk for girl?

I think I'm confused. I thought it was just some strange obsession with gulls (birds).

    December 2, 2009

  • Delicious Filipino drink consisting mostly of ice, milk, red beans, chick peas, coconut shavings or slices, yam, rice and jackfruit. It's usually served with ice cream on top.

    Yuuuuumy!

    December 2, 2009

  • Do your pour the sauce before or after blending?

Blended drinks remind me of halo halo.

    December 2, 2009

  • Sorry. Next time I'll wait until you're ready.

    December 2, 2009

  • Thank you.

*eats cake from underneath, licks icing, eats the rest: the only way to eat a cupcake*

    December 2, 2009

  • *gasp*

    *faint*

    December 2, 2009

  • Ha! What sort of reactions do you get?

    December 2, 2009

  • Vegemite off a teaspoon is also delicious, but too much can destroy its power.

Heheheh. I love the image of anyone with fistfuls of Nutella!

Nutella and jam supposedly go very nicely together too: sweet with sweet I guess.

    December 2, 2009

  • HAHAHA!

    Oh Italians!

Apparantly the Chinese made spaghetti first. I say the Italians perfected it.

    December 2, 2009

  • Well, that almost killed spaghetti for me. I remember when I was small, my mum used to make me eat the bone marrow of some exotic dish we used to have. I cried. No, I didn't actually, but it was pretty bad.

And with the slurping issue, as long as it's quiet, short and doesn't flick up onto your face, spraying sauce around your nose, like a bolognaise moustache.

Bilby, is there something about spraying spaghetti that ignites your creative genius or does the wallpaper add another flavour?

    December 2, 2009

  • So did I, but apparantly not.

    December 2, 2009

  • *makes mental note to try all these combinations*

Mayonnaise goes well on apple as well. Incidentally vegemite matches apple too.

    December 2, 2009

  • I'm not sure about rt, but I consider it an insult to the spaghetti, and I'm sure the Italians can say something about it too. I was always under the impression if the dangling strands from the twirl around your fork are too long, you cut them with your teeth.

I'm interested in other ways though.

Does anyone actually have spaghetti with meatballs?

    December 2, 2009

  • Well I'm taking all the UMbrage, UmBrage, UmbRage, UmbrAge, UmbraGe and UmbragE I can, as well as all the stuff reesetee left behind.

    December 2, 2009

  • becupcakes reesetee. (who(m?) I think still hasn't gotten over the last becupcaking from the trebuchet)

    *sigh*

    Farewell cupcakes, farewell pig.

    December 2, 2009

  • *scream*

    December 2, 2009

  • YAY!

    *erratic applause*

Coming on wonderfully! I love them all. Well done!

    :D

    December 2, 2009

  • Someoneone once told me that peanut butter and jam is good. I've had that many times, of course, and it's not bad, but on that particular day I misheard him and thought he said 'ham'.

So I went trooping home for a nice peanutbutter and ham sandwich.

For the record, it was actually very nice.

But vegemite goes with ham and cheese beautifully all the time.

*takes some of rt's spooned out pb*

    December 2, 2009

  • Snicker bars with griddle marks!

    hehheh

    December 2, 2009

  • Hear Hear!

I use the 'proper' way, but without the spoon. I also had a friend who used the proper way, but she would pull her fork out of the spaghetti, leaving a little twirl on her spoon which she ate from.

    December 2, 2009

  • 1 year later: I'd like to point out that JKR has, to a certain extent, destroyed this word among the younger generation. You can make a perfectly decent, if not forceful, statement or complaint: "I take umbrage etc..." and your audience will roll on the floor laughing because they have an image of you taking Professor Umbridge.

Of course it depends on the general age and maturity of your audience, but it annoys me rather a bit.

    December 1, 2009

  • *becupcakes marsupial as he scampers away*

Mind your own business! It wasn't my fault my pig found my store of alcohol! He was dying anyway I tell you!

    December 1, 2009

  • Someone told me today that bad Underscores become Hyphens.

    That's not true is it?

    Is it?

    I'm not bad.

    I'm really not.

    I promise.

    December 1, 2009

  • What is wrong with the third pronunciation from 'Onomatopoeia'? It sounds like a drunk and dying pig.

    December 1, 2009

  • Awwww, is poor little big ears upset?

    ;-)

Mind you, you were the one who put droopy drawers in her name.

Yay! We have progressed to the stage of optimism. How this discussion has evolved!

    Heh.

    December 1, 2009

  • Hehheheheheheh.

    (not phony)

    December 1, 2009

  • Cape horn voice. I think. I'm not so sure anymore. It might have been somewhere in the middle.

    *sits in idle contemplation*

    December 1, 2009

  • Marmite maidenhead. Losing vegemite virginity would be a pleasant experience. Obviously.

    December 1, 2009

  • *resists licking self clean*

*loads chocolate and fairy cupcakes in a trebuchet*

    *flings mightily at rt*

*sits back to enjoy the chaos, sipping a martini scornfully*

    December 1, 2009

  • That is disgusting.

Now I have more reason to dislike Harry Potter... and Ginny Weasley

    December 1, 2009

  • Chicken catch-a-tory! Hahahahahaha!

    December 1, 2009

  • Snap! There goes my spelling again, out the window. I wonder how I could have possibly gotten that wrong, maybe something to do with my lousy pronunciation?

    'statistician'

Oops. It's Foxy's statistician hat. Sorry Foxy.

    P.S. Funny picture.

    November 30, 2009

  • You've been awfully quiet lately.

    All going ok?

    November 30, 2009

  • Nibble off opposite corners and place one end in mug of boiling water. Suck the water up the Tim Tam, melting the chocolate and burning your fingers in the process. The first person to finish their Tim Tam wins.

    November 30, 2009

  • Yes. That would be unforgivable.

    November 30, 2009

  • Well...I'm never going to be bored again, not with this fantastic list. I mean, who wouldn't want to do these things! I never thought exercising and exorcised ghost would be so fun!

    November 30, 2009

  • Cool! I'm gullible! Sell it to me! I must have the Brooklyn Bridge! I must, I must!

    November 30, 2009

  • I think I might just take regular old umbrage at that remark too. Umbrage hog.

    Nyah!

Taking umbrage isn't as hard as I thought. It doesn't burn calories, but I think I may do it more often.

    November 30, 2009

  • Really? I'll read it for sure at some point, but I've been banned from buying anything at the moment due to some erratic spending I've done in the recent past.

    November 30, 2009

  • Would you happen to know the Johnathon Livingston Seagull?

    November 30, 2009

  • How about sionnach's statician's hat?

    *puts on big booming voice*

    CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION

or maybe a Santa hat- no hang on, I've GOT IT! Easter Bunny ears!

Although I'm sure those big leathery ears are good enough.

    November 30, 2009

  • Can I have a bit of that iLife 2.0? I intend to develop it into an iLife 3.0 and maybe I may need some for my own... ahem... personal reasons...

    November 30, 2009

  • I don't think I've ever taken umbrage before.

So I take Umbrage at that.

    November 30, 2009

  • Ha! I thought that too for a moment but then I was struck to the bone by the disturbing thought of unicorns and fairies eating skittles. *crunch crunch*

    ew.

    November 30, 2009

  • Milo or Nesquik?

For me, it's Nesquik on a hot day, and Milo on a cold night, a mix of both on a cold day and a hot night.

    November 30, 2009

  • I told you so.

    ;-)

    What's the afterlife like?

    Vegemity? Cheesy? iSnaky?

    November 30, 2009

  • Yes yes yes yes yes!

Yum. My mouth is watering. I have to go before I drool all over the keyboard.

You won't find me refusing anything grilled. Not even cake. As long as the grill marks are a dark brown or even black.

    November 30, 2009

  • I'd say so. There's too much at stake* in the afterlife to suddenly turn around and denounce the rumour.

Besides rumours do take a lot of umbrage.

    I would know.

*stake: burnt at the stake: hell: afterlife... geddit?

    November 30, 2009

  • We miss you too bearness.

    November 30, 2009

  • Oh the agony of defeat! I know it well.

    November 30, 2009

  • Typical. Aren't all penguins snobby!

    November 30, 2009

  • I personally thought that was common knowledge, provided you knew how to pronounce it.

    November 30, 2009

  • I hope magical Skittles aren't poisonous. I may have 'accidentally' eaten a whole bucketful of them this morning. It's hard to say.

    November 30, 2009

  • *gasp*

    November 30, 2009

  • Heehee.

    Did they smell nice?

The only scented marker I've smelt is permanent.

    November 30, 2009

  • A step up from fascinating.

    November 30, 2009

  • As we all know, Hot Wheels has the greatest tracks of all affordable time. The way the cars zip around those vertical loops is just exhilerating. Ok, I'm exaggerating, but apparantly it's possible to do a vertical loop with a car life size, with a little help from g-force.

    Faskinating.

    November 30, 2009

  • Whoops. Sorry, I confused you with myself.

    hehheh.

    November 30, 2009

  • Though we now know you actively stomped a fairy and its insides were rainbow. ;-)

    November 30, 2009

  • Not trying to be pedantic or anything, but shouldn't the fine be $1.84 million dollars?

I like audiobastardry. They should have used that. ;-)

    November 30, 2009

  • I think really, in the end, Wordnik will be what the Wordies (and wordniks) make it. All technical glitches can be resolved eventually, but the spirit depends entirely on the people. If the spirit relied on some website, then it wasn't true spirit and I'm sure that isn't the way it was.

What's really troubling me is the disappearing Wordies.

    November 30, 2009

  • That's exactly something he could do.

    And very well too.

    ;-)

    November 30, 2009

  • I absolutely adore your pronunciation of choo choo train. It's so side-splittingly funny!

    November 29, 2009

  • That sounds good.

    November 29, 2009

  • bilby, I think you're particularly right about the Twitter. It really doesn't tell you anything about the word at all, except how other people misuse or abuse it and I also agree about that random word bit...unfortunately. Yesterday I was on and off all the time, but nothing much was happening at all. I know there will be some slow days, but there was nothing and I fear that there will be more of that.

I know it's going to take time, but these last few posts are going to make me cry.

    :'(

Edit: By-the-way John, I took so long to type my post I missed yours. I'd just like to say we still really appreciate all the good intentions and understand how difficult it must be for you too.

    November 29, 2009

  • Is it possible that *gasp* Wordies are questioning their existance??

No, I agree with a lot that 'nach said. I know that when I type the address I type: wordnik.com/zeitgeist. I don't even bother going to the opening page anymore. Zeitgeist is the opening page. However, in response to sionnach's last question, I think it would be the Wordies, and the comments that attract 'talented fresh blood'. With no comment on my talent, that's what I found most appealing about Wordie when I first joined (including the list making).

In relation to all those technical glitches, I've been relying on time to straighten them out.

I'm not entirely sure what point I'm trying to make, except maybe patience is the way to go? I don't think anyone's trying to be negative, but realistic.

    *wrings hands nervously*

    November 29, 2009

  • I don't know what to say...isn't the very essence of Wordie humour? Isn't that the stuff we were allowed to import when switching to Wordnik? Wordie Spirit

    Maybe I've misunderstood someone...?

(VO, I think you hit the nail right on the head, so to speak.)

    November 29, 2009

  • I thought that was only my machine. I was trying to search pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis and got it wrong 5 times before I gave up...all thanks to the autocomplete (more auto, less complete.)

    hehheh. Powered by blipper indeed!

    November 29, 2009

  • Personally, I like my Witchetty aunts well done with maple syrup.

Madmouth: :) Could you link that please?

    November 29, 2009

  • Damn right vo!

And I'm sorry but colon cleanser doesn't sound overly appealing either.

    November 29, 2009

  • What a lovely attitude. I like it. :-)

    November 28, 2009

  • Hehheh.

    ;-)

    November 28, 2009

  • How you feel after a hayfever attack.

    November 28, 2009

  • Feel free to add that to my list, Jubjub. (The link should be on the right sidebar.)

Hopefully it will grow as soon as I get time to investigate the life of Una.

    ;-)

    November 28, 2009

  • hehheh.

    Unabated, then Unawaked, then Unabashed.

    Poor girl.

    November 28, 2009

  • Please don't delete your pronunciation on fattoria! It's on my list of Awesome Pronunciations. I like it!

(I never did find that vexample by the way.)

    November 28, 2009

  • Yum! ;-) But then again, people do eat honey ants... raw, and wichety grubs and things like that too. Toasted ants don't seem so bad compared to some things.

At first glance, I misread this as giant toasted aunts. That's bad.

    November 28, 2009

  • It's music to my ears.

    November 28, 2009

  • Where is skip? We haven't heard from him in a while. There are still a few wordies who haven't shown up on wordnik yet.

    ?

    November 28, 2009

  • What does sionnach mean anyway?

    November 28, 2009

  • Awesome. As long as there are plenty of cupcakes, ice-cream cones and dates.

    hehheh.

    November 28, 2009

  • Heh! No way. I loved that page! Makes me wish for more spammers.

    JUST JOKING!

But that page was hilarious. You guys...

    November 28, 2009

  • A type or plant...or...well..

    November 28, 2009

  • Neutralises 'free radicals'.

Sounds like some sort of manic political party.

    ;-)

    November 28, 2009

  • I would rather like to becupcake with someone.

Edit: On second thoughts becupcaking someone doesn't sound too bad either...

    November 28, 2009

  • me

    November 28, 2009

  • spam?

    November 27, 2009

  • That should say dirtyish. I don't know what went wrong with my typing and I'm itching to fix it, but the edit button has disappeared.

    November 27, 2009

  • hehheh. I love Popeye.

    November 27, 2009

  • Squishy yellow? No... more like vomity yellow run through with red.

(and the best Volkswagen Beetles are white(or at least a dirish white) with a blue and red stripe and the number 53)

  • Love of learning.

    November 27, 2009

  • I'm not sure it will 'excite' someone more than it will disgust them.

    November 27, 2009

  • Peanuts don't contain peas.

And there is no money in grains. It's all an illusion. Everyone knows that money grows on trees.

    November 27, 2009

  • Eheheheheh.

    November 27, 2009

  • Ah. I see.

    November 27, 2009

  • A dying star is so sad. :-(

    A bursting one is...well...sadder.

But I love the 'chewy, squar-shaped, fruit-flavoured candy', especially the ones with the liquidy, juicy stuff inside.

    November 27, 2009

  • What a terrific list!

I find that when I type a particularly long word, my opposite hand does the next space: a queer balancing act.

    November 27, 2009

  • Is there something about the phrase 'Damn near killed'er' that I've missed??

I have seen it on other pages as well.?

    November 26, 2009

  • Fantastic!

    November 26, 2009

  • I'm not sure we want that...

    November 26, 2009

  • I hope it was done with a sign, and not a ceremony.

    November 26, 2009

  • You can call me anything you like, Pro, given it's not offensive of course.

And wow, does frogapplause have a loooong name.

    Heh.

    November 26, 2009

  • Ah. I see.

    November 26, 2009

  • What did the second pronunciation say? It was pretty good!

(Accidentally read uselessness' comment as 'Do that have auctioneers in your useless corner of the world?'

    November 26, 2009

  • And bibly's done a pronunciation on droopy drawers, although it doesn't say coldsores.

    November 26, 2009

  • White chocolate? White chocolate is the best!

(it tastes nothing like kitchen sponge and I defy anyone who thinks otherwise)

    ;-)

    November 26, 2009

  • I can accept gangerh's last comment. That's reasonable, but for words that are used more widely, I think, should have some sort of etymology or root.

    November 26, 2009

  • Yay! *loves this phrase*

    November 26, 2009

  • But even with any other accent...

Can frogapplause add a pronunciation...enlighten us?

    November 26, 2009

  • Exactly my point. Somewhere along the line, someone has to make up the word.

(Please don't confuse a word with a random bunch of letters that sound nice together stuck onto a meaning. I can't accept that, and I think I'm justified. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

    November 25, 2009

  • Hah! Thanks a lot!

    :D

    November 25, 2009

  • That is an adorable hamster. (or is it a guinea pig?)

    November 25, 2009

  • Are you for real? You've ridden one?! Do you think it would be an awful waste of money?

    November 25, 2009

  • He sleeps with the cuddlefishes does he?

    heeheehee. That makes me laugh.

    See cuttlefish

    November 25, 2009

  • Love the pronunciation. The t's leap out of the speakers!

    November 25, 2009

  • If you know what riding a unicycle feels like, please let me know!!!

    I may be getting one.

    ;)

    November 25, 2009

  • That's what I was hoping to hear! ;-)

Unfortunately, I don't think the rest of the world necessarily agrees.

  • Frozen cartoons are the best cartoons, that's what I always say.

    November 24, 2009

  • Important question: what constitutes a legitimate word, especially in comparison with a 'madeupical' one?

    November 24, 2009

  • Yes, but unfortunately there's no such day Down Under.

    November 24, 2009

  • Do I smell sarcasm in the air???

    November 24, 2009

  • Haha! Two questions: firstly, did that really happen Vanished, or was it by pure genius that you came up with that? and secondly, uselessness, you didn't really bang your knee when recording that pronunciation did you?

Phewf! All this thought of knee-banging...

    November 24, 2009

  • :-) It's still to grow.

    November 24, 2009

  • I suspect that if they hadn't explicitly told you so, you could sue them for sending unmarked spam. You can sue for almost anything these days.

    November 24, 2009

  • Yay! Our bearness is back!

    :D

    November 24, 2009

  • Yes, it's nice to see it back!

    :D

    November 24, 2009

  • Careful! I suspect you just popped our ruzuzu's bubble!

    November 24, 2009

    November 23, 2009

  • Thanks ref. ;-)

    November 23, 2009

  • Don't you just love it!?

    November 23, 2009

  • Yay! We now have 'most commented' on the side of the Zeitgeist page! The only thing is, the links don't seem to work.

At least, some of them don't. List of the day seemed to work, but the others like comments, bugs and cake (yum!) didn't. It lead to a 404. (Nice sign by the way.)

    November 23, 2009

  • I don't know if it's just me, but your pronunciation for: 'Der dicke Dachdecker deckte dir dein Dach, drum dank dem dicken Dachdecker, dass der dicke Dachdecker dir dein Dach deckte' isn't there. Have you deleted it? If so, then I request it back. ;-)

What does it mean by the way?

    November 23, 2009

  • hah! It has a nice sign.

    November 23, 2009

  • Hee. It's fun.

    November 22, 2009

  • Haha! That's so true!.

But don't worry JM, we love you anyway!

    ;-)

    November 22, 2009

  • I thought 'software' was like 'sheep' or 'fish'. It meant both singular and plural.

    What VO said.

    :-)

    November 22, 2009

  • Hah! I don't know about 'specific excrement' specifically but that book looks Cute!

    November 22, 2009

  • What does that mean?

    November 22, 2009

  • Magnificent. :)

    November 21, 2009

    Turning to poison while the bee-mouth sips;

Ay, in the very temple of delight

Veiled Melancholy has her sovran shrine,

Though seen of none save him whose strenuous tongue

  • According to Wikipedia: The term colonel derives from Latin columnella 'small column'. However, it was never actually a Roman rank. The system of ranks in the Roman military was quite different. As a rank the term arose in the late sixteenth century Italy where it referred to the officer in charge of a column (Italian colonna, plural colonne) or field force. The term is first attested as colonnello, but it is perhaps a truncation of something like capitano colonnello 'captain of the column, the captain designated to command the column'. In this context colonna seems to refer to a force marching in column, rather than to a battle formation — a battle or battlation of pike.
