    November 15, 2007

  • Uh, oh. I think the wordworm crawled onto the wrong list!

    November 15, 2007

  • That was fun! Really gives me a fresh perspective on my dad's closet.

    November 15, 2007

  • Or, John could subdivide each list into pages of approximately 100 words.

    November 13, 2007

  • Sweet doll

    November 13, 2007

  • Ooo! Can somebody versed in graphic design put out the Wordie version of a Google doodle? I know that it would be completely useless, but I think that a birthday necessitates a little frivolity. Not that I'm thinking of anyone in particular....

    November 12, 2007

  • Can we stick this on a stuffie somewhere?

    November 12, 2007

  • Yeah, just looked at my own lists for the first time in ages. I think what was throwing me off is that you changed the name of your Bird Wirds list or something.

    November 12, 2007

  • Picture a custodian in his 50s high-fiving kids and telling them "It's ALL good!" Mr. X walks around like he’s got the best job on Earth. I used to be a naysayer, but then my perspective changed.

    November 12, 2007

  • Hehehe. Did you redo your lists, c_b? I *know* that your second list didn't used to be a Tunie.

    November 12, 2007

  • Could loggerheads ever be at loggerheads? They seem too placid.

    November 12, 2007

  • Actually, uncut cabbage will last for about a month in the fridge. ;)

    November 12, 2007

  • So my friend decided that The Painted Veil would be a "fun" Friday night movie.

    November 10, 2007

  • HATE, HATE, HATE!!!! But only when applied to pants. I cannot begin to express how much I disliked stirrup pants, even when they were in fashion. They press on your knees in the most unpleasant way.

    November 8, 2007

  • I know it's wrong, but it always looks like IN-cho-ate to my eye. Why didn't the queen consult me when she fashyned her English? Hmph!

    November 8, 2007

  • That is some serious username you got going on. Can we call you Chano, or just The FIST?

    November 8, 2007

  • Really? You are simply filled to the brim with useful tidbits, even eight months later.

    November 8, 2007

  • I happen to love your list names.

    November 8, 2007

  • Funny, I think an aversion to slugs is rather normal.

(Points for your use of queer!)

    November 8, 2007

  • Tell me more, tell me more!

    November 4, 2007

  • I wish I could take the credit. Sadly, that one was stolen from a commercial I was watching while on Wordie.

    November 3, 2007

  • The name Orpah always reminds me of the word porpoise.

    November 2, 2007

  • I get my words from all over Wordie. :)

    November 2, 2007

  • What's your beef with tuna fish?

    November 2, 2007

  • She's confirmed it on her show.

    November 2, 2007

  • Good. We're all over at my place, eating my mom's cookies.

    November 2, 2007

  • What about good one-liners? We have them in spades.

    November 2, 2007

  • Yes reestee, in the South there are Wawas in the South.

    November 2, 2007

  • I cried. Thank you, Mr. Uselessness.

    November 2, 2007

  • Who says that nicknames have to be short? I'd argue that it can be long with a nice flow.

    November 2, 2007

  • What was that?

    It's our savings.

    What's it doing?

    Making a sandwich.

    November 2, 2007

  • OH MY WORD, there are definitions on the word pages!!! Every time I take a day or two off, the place completely changes. Our little Wordie is growing up so fast.

    November 2, 2007

  • I believe it's actually illegal to plant in some states.

    November 2, 2007

  • uselessness taught me how on this list.

    November 2, 2007

  • I am decidedly a member of the "crown" camp. So how's about them apples?

    November 2, 2007

  • Tag!

    November 2, 2007

  • Also, something to keep your skirts at their fullest.

    October 30, 2007

  • Outlets? Like the one that my student tried to stick her finger in the other day? Aie! No hyperbole here. No substance either. ;)

    October 30, 2007

  • Oh my goodness! A friend and I stopped by this tiny convenience store in the mountains of South Carolina. There was a bulletin board by the door simply plastered in Polaroids of terminated turkeys and deceased deer. Each photo was labeled with the animal's size and the hunter's name. This was also the store where we saw the KKK bumper sticker. Sketchy....

    October 28, 2007

  • White on rice! One of my coworkers uses this expression, and I love it.

    October 28, 2007

  • My dad says, "I swannie!" No clue how to spell that.

    October 28, 2007

  • No, y'all just don't know yourselves very well. ;)

    October 28, 2007

  • Sounds perfectly logical to me. I usually keep my raccoons in the tool shed, but a nook would work well too.

    October 26, 2007

  • They have their own website! Silly things always make my day.

    October 26, 2007

  • Hahahahahahah. Can't wait to see what else you've cooked up when I come back. :)

    October 26, 2007

  • I love this list. I kinda hate that I love this list, but it's wonderfully funny! It reminds me of that country act, Big & Rich. They have the worst songs, and I enjoy them all. :)

    October 26, 2007

  • chained_bear is caffeinated. It's either c_b or r--I know we've had a conversation about this.

    jennarenn is fried goodness.

    John is dissociative. ???

reesetee is abecedarian. Really, this fits everybody.

    rocksinmypockets is winsome.

seanahan is sophistical. I might actually bet real monopoly money on this one. ;)

    skipvia is tenacious. ???

uselessness is rapprochemental. He gets people together.

P.S. We got report card forms today. I'll be out of pocket until the 6th.

P.P.S. What adjective do you think slumry would choose for herself?

    October 26, 2007

  • So true. I always feel like a bit of a parasite, but the comments are so much more fun and low-stress.

    October 26, 2007

  • Always makes me wonder, "what was George thinking?"

    October 24, 2007

  • Syrinx?

    October 24, 2007

  • Awww. They were so much better than toe shoes! Brings back memories of Miss Belastrachi fussing at me to keep my arms up. :)

    October 23, 2007

  • I did find the following delightful notes at the end of "Deconstructing Astronomy's Holy Grail" by Steve Nadis (AIR May/June 2006).

    2. I can't cite any official "source" for this statement, but trust me, it's true.

    3. Hinted at (though not explicitly detailed) in the aforementioned "In Search of the Holy Grail," Annals of Improbable Research, March/April 1996, pp. 4-6...

    21. Reference unknown; lost by the editor of this journal (though he is certain to deny it and cast blame elsewhere--on a surrogate, perhaps).

    22. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never wrote this mystery but surely would have had there been an additional installment in the Sherlock Holmes saga.

    23. You can be sure I have much more to say on this subject, but my editor is kind of stingy when it comes to "word count." Fortunately, he tends to get tired by the end of a wearying article like this and, as a result, inattentive. If you are reading this note, you can be sure he never got this far. His loss is our gain.

Tee-hee. There were other footnotes, but they weren't funny.

    October 23, 2007

  • That makes me sad. It's such a pretty word for a dabbler.

    October 22, 2007

  • "Monosyllabic isn't." -skipvia

    October 21, 2007

  • You're so good. (I'm also positively *thrilled* that somebody else is on right now.) :)

    October 21, 2007

  • I like pukkin. :) I think we all understand that you were joking, but I much prefer when stabby is directed at the words themselves.

    October 21, 2007

  • Actually it's the frass, as well as the expired crickets themselves. Ugh.

    October 21, 2007

  • Shirt quote: why the heck is "monosyllabic" five freakin' syllables?

    Good one c_b.

    October 21, 2007

  • c_b, the same thing happened to me. I ended up leaving the list.

    October 21, 2007

  • palooka, you are spot on. I responded to my dry period by deleting lists.

    October 20, 2007

  • It seems most wordies have something else on their minds.

    October 20, 2007

  • I love your username.

    October 20, 2007

  • In the past seven days, 1851 comments were made by the top ten alone. It was *quite* a week.

    October 20, 2007

  • Ah, pumpkin. I had that nickname as a child. It was pronounced PUMP! kin.

*waiting to see if Seanahan will add PUMP!kin* ;)

    October 20, 2007

  • about what?

    October 20, 2007

  • Crickets are only icky when you keep them confined to cages for weeks. Then the smell gets pretty intense.

    October 20, 2007

  • My roommate just saw a t-shirt last night that read, "Will knit for tattoos." I thought that it was cute.

    October 20, 2007

  • Where?

    October 20, 2007

  • moritherapy, you might want to click on the word struwwelpeter and leave your comment there too. Lots of cool conversations happen on the words themselves, and you don't want to miss out. :)

The words on this list are good examples.

    October 20, 2007

  • wig out

    October 19, 2007

  • Good one.

    October 19, 2007

  • But some people's mothers chose ugly silver!

    Hi mom.

    October 19, 2007

  • Have a slice.

    October 19, 2007

  • I posted the answer on your profile so future generations would have the opportunity to figure it out for themselves. :)

    October 19, 2007

  • I wonder who's kissing her now. :)

    October 19, 2007

  • soitoldthatfool all about my drinking problem.

    October 19, 2007

  • spookymilk occasionally inhabits my fridge.

P.S. That is the very FIRST hyperlink that I have ever done from memory. :D

    October 19, 2007

  • Great list c_b!

    October 19, 2007

  • Cool! Anybody know how high the levels go?

    October 19, 2007

  • Such as reestee's lists of words for tiny cars and huge suvs? If I had the time I'd make those lists into some cool merch. (hint, hint)

    October 18, 2007

  • Oooo! Sounds like we need our own walnut-paneled lounge filled with cigar smoke, lofty conversation, and crystal decanters good gin.

    October 18, 2007

  • Ooo, trivet and I have matching lists!

    October 18, 2007

  • I remember a week, back in the dark ages, when I was on top with about sixty comments. Times change.

    October 18, 2007

  • My personal term for all that God created to help tighten up those arteries. Some examples include bacon, hush puppies, apple fritters with powdered sugar, fried chicken, and homemade doughnuts.

    October 18, 2007

  • Skip, you've got to stop hanging around the uselessness.

    October 18, 2007

  • The soundtrack is back! Who did that?

    *huming along*

    October 18, 2007

  • Eek!!!!

    October 18, 2007

  • Eh. Eraser marks cost me my A back in 9th grade keyboarding class. I'm less nostalgic.

    October 18, 2007

  • How do you know this? Are there pictures?

    October 18, 2007

  • ...making it even *easier* to teach children to read.

    October 18, 2007

  • I love the list title. :)

    October 18, 2007

  • Excellent suggestion.

    October 17, 2007

  • I'm way behind in my reading, so I just read your post John. In fact, I did a rather embarassing little dance. I've been *wanting* a wordie t-shirt. Particularly anything I can wear in front of other people's kids. If we're taking requests, I would be up for a stuffie shirt. :)

In addition to my conversations list, check out chit-chat and idle chatter. Right now they're organized by legnth, but that needs to be redone. I'll turn it in with my TPS report.

    October 17, 2007

  • Wearing a sea foam green polyester suit with a pink ruffled shirt and white patent leather shoes takes moxie.

On a side note, why isn't sea foam one word? Both Dictionary.com & Word want to split in half. I think that the two halves want to sit together.

    October 17, 2007

  • Kilts of any sort are alluring. Alton Brown needs a utilikilt.

    October 17, 2007

  • Your dog knows NASCAR???

    October 16, 2007

  • Just wanted to apologize in case my comments on rhythm belcher came out the wrong way. You weren't the one I was worried about. :)

    October 16, 2007

  • Five down, 264 to go!

    October 16, 2007

  • Ah, I wonder if that's the same Holly Wood that I've heard of.

    October 16, 2007

  • I have a student named Quinn this year. I've been playing Quinn the Eskimo in my head ever since planning week. Every time I call the child's name, it starts over.

Moral: Don't name your child Quinn.

    October 16, 2007

  • Wow. I just realized that people actually *could* stalk me online. Why don't you friend me instead? :)

    October 15, 2007

  • Then stalk away. :)

    October 15, 2007

  • Don't be greedy.

    October 15, 2007

  • How exactly do you stalk people on Facebook if you only know their username?

    October 15, 2007

  • Meant only in the most complementary manner.

    October 15, 2007

  • Maybe you could set the building on fire.

    October 15, 2007

  • But will you still love it tomorrow?

    October 15, 2007

  • You must be practicing for your TS clearance!

    October 15, 2007

  • If I were that skinny, I'd be one happy camper. ;)

    October 15, 2007

  • I'd like to get my hands on the dweeb who wrote that!

    October 15, 2007

  • And yet, you keep telling us all about New Mexico.

    October 15, 2007

  • Great ideas, seanahan!

    October 15, 2007

  • Anybody remember the Zero bar? It only had 60 g of sugar!

    October 15, 2007

  • Wha? *hangs head*

    October 13, 2007

  • Hahahahahahhahahaha. See waxed paper.

    October 13, 2007

  • You are SSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO wrong!

    October 13, 2007

  • I am afraid that I may be out of The Loop as well. We'll just start our own loop. One that maybe can work on my work maybe not blocking wordie during work hours. Just a thought.

    October 13, 2007

  • Ditto. I couldn't LOL because I couldn't breathe.

    October 13, 2007

  • Oh, the unbearable coolness of it all!!!

    October 13, 2007

  • They come with nuts???

    October 13, 2007

  • Frankly, I'm not a fan, although I do appreciate the creativity it took to say, "hey, let's take that delicious, crispy cabbage and soak it in yucky vinegar for several months," similar to the creativity it requires to keep a sentence aloft through endless phrases, clauses, and comma-splices, like a balloon batted aloft by a group of bored adolescents late at night.

    That was so illegal. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • Are those your kitties??? They're ridiculously cute. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • White chocolate is definitely heavenly. I don't care if it's not real chocolate. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • I love Great Big Sea!!! Mad points.

    October 12, 2007

  • Yay! I'm a fan. I'd missed slough of despond.

    October 12, 2007

  • This word came to mind yesterday, and I fondly thought of this page. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • 'Cause I feel bad for the little cartoon character.

    October 12, 2007

  • My school computer security system has BLOCKED WORDIE!!! I'm rather upset, especially since the comments page has exploded recently. I'll never keep up once slumry returns!!!

    October 12, 2007

  • Oh, I'm so glad! I thought I was the only one who couldn't figure out how to add tags.

    October 12, 2007

  • Love the song; hate the idea of disposable furniture.

    October 12, 2007

  • Now if work hadn't blocked my precious Wordie, I'd be tons happier.

    October 12, 2007

  • Why?

    October 12, 2007

  • How cute!

    October 12, 2007

  • I love nerds with a good sense of humor. :) Wasn't there a hair club for scientists at some point?

    October 12, 2007

  • I thought that there were few things worse than the Ed School by this name, but this conversation is one of them.

    October 12, 2007

  • Similar to cheese and crackers!

    October 12, 2007

  • How do you pronounce Qvaak?

    October 12, 2007

  • I happen to enjoy your use of jolly good. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • Ok, why is Flickr/Yahoo asking for my credit-card number?

    October 12, 2007

  • This conversation todally illuminates somebody's facebook status. :)

    October 12, 2007

  • :)

    October 11, 2007

  • Are you a dancer?

    October 11, 2007

  • Does anybody else remember the flying toasters screensaver? I bet

    braintoast does. :)

    October 11, 2007

  • This username is *so* added. :) Jen

    October 11, 2007

  • It's actually a play for two actors that has half a dozen characters. The actors will just suddenly change their posturing, and you know that they're a different character. It was some of the best acting I've seen in real life, but not one of the better plays. It's a bit of a downer.

    October 11, 2007

  • Reminds me of mincemeat, which is heaven.

    October 11, 2007

  • One awesome teddy bear.

    October 11, 2007

  • I think your daugh taught a few things to my cat. Fluffy Snowflake was almost bigger than Madison was, but that didn't prevent him for carrying it around by the tummy. No idea how that cat saugh where he was going.

    October 11, 2007

  • Cheerwine is still around and kicking, although you can only find Diet Cheerwine in the Carolinas.

Oh Colleen, would you say, "I want a regular diet Coke"? Just wondering.

    October 11, 2007

  • How did this word make it onto The History of Cool?

    October 11, 2007

  • It's no fun listing normal words! Hasn't u taught you anything?!

    October 11, 2007

  • Maybe ey fries something other than chicken. ;)

    October 11, 2007

  • What an apt description!

    October 11, 2007

  • No it ain't!

    October 11, 2007

  • Do you ever sit up at night and wonder: What if Wikipedia is wrong?

    October 11, 2007

  • Actually, there are several:

    resident

undergrad (but only during exam time)

    mom

    October 11, 2007

  • Cool username! Did you ever see the play Stones in His Pockets?

    October 11, 2007

  • Because English is noted for its limited vocabulary?

    October 11, 2007

  • See clam.

    October 11, 2007

  • Just commenting so I can find this later. :)

    October 10, 2007

  • THE list? That really narrows it down. ;)

    October 10, 2007

  • Possibly. Were you one of those skinny boys who glowed white? ;)

    October 10, 2007

  • Awesome username. :)

    October 9, 2007

  • Wow, I am so guilty.

    October 9, 2007

  • Oh no, did I delete a good list? I could only find two words, so I decided to chuck it. I'm such a minimalist!

    Hee-hee.

    October 9, 2007

  • Floppies!!! Did the 5" ones actually flop? I don't quite remember....

    October 9, 2007

  • Oh, and no idea why I listed this on my shorter and sweet list. Clearly needs to be moved to conversations at this point.

    October 9, 2007

  • I did invite folks to play back when I had all the time in the world. It's not my fault if y'all choose not to live in the Eastern Time Zone. ;P

    October 9, 2007

  • Spammers get smilies? I want stock options, or at least sammies! ;)

    October 9, 2007

  • Really, it's a day the church sets aside so the clergy can go watch classic James Bond flicks. ;)

    October 9, 2007

  • YARRR! This is by FARRR my favorite.

    October 9, 2007

  • Clam-I-Am!

    October 9, 2007

  • I agree with c_b. My sense of humor is difficult to translate into the written word, so I often edit or delete my comments. I always leave my stuff after somebody else has replied to it.

    October 8, 2007

  • Argh! I hate commas; the rules are so bendy.

    October 8, 2007

  • Sometimes a word slips itself into every available conversation, until I begin to annoy even myself. This weekend it was egregious.

    October 8, 2007

  • You need to stop coming up with cool ideas. I'm sick and tired of favoriting(?) your darn lists! ;P

    October 8, 2007

  • John, you are so good. I was going to leave a question about tags on this page, but you preempted it. :)

    October 6, 2007

  • This reminded me of the tryst conversatoin from ages ago. :)

    October 6, 2007

  • This list is the pants!

    October 6, 2007

  • Sparkle is also a children's skip-counting game. :)

    October 6, 2007

  • SonofGroucho, you have no idea how happy that makes me. :) According to my mom, Dad excelled at dad dancing, which is why I've never seen him dance

    October 5, 2007

  • Myzeld! My AP English teacher talked about that mispronunciation. It had never occured to me, but it make so much sense. (Ooo! Ooo! Do I get to complain about how badly the English alphabet sucks???)

    October 5, 2007

  • SonofGroucho, this *is* a classic wordie page. brtom hasn't commented in ages, and I've already added it to one of my conversations lists. :)

    October 5, 2007

  • Alas, the insect unit is actually in October, but I *will* be using this word tomorrow. :)

    October 3, 2007

  • Rub it in. At least we get an average of seven extra years to heckle our offspring about the ordeal.

    October 3, 2007

  • So I lied. I finally added drinking problem. ;)

    October 2, 2007

  • Sigh. To add, or not to add? I finally gave up and added airplane!

    October 2, 2007

  • I humbly submit the holy hand grenade of antioch.

    October 2, 2007

  • 9:22pm

    October 2, 2007

  • The World's Tackiest Garage

    October 2, 2007

  • Snap!

    September 25, 2007

  • Hi! You have an officially awesome username. :)

    September 25, 2007

  • At a recent family wedding, one of the uncles let slip that my mom, the health nut, knows how to make doughnuts from scratch. She's been holding out on us all these years.

    September 25, 2007

  • Oh no, my work blocked the link. I'm intrigued.

    September 25, 2007

  • Does anybody know which conversation this inside joke started on? I *want* it.

    September 24, 2007

  • I bet slumry is suffering from exhaustion. Keeping at the top of the comment list isn't for the faint of heart. ;) I did always think that there was a real life connection between you and c_b. Is that untrue?

    September 23, 2007

  • It just that Nutella seems so similar to dessert. That makes me seriously reconsider the nutritional value of PB&J.

    September 21, 2007

  • This word *perfectly* describes the face of one of my students. Some days I want to walk over and check his pulse.

    September 21, 2007

  • Less sugar than jam? You can't be serious.

    September 21, 2007

  • I actually got a B in my highschool keyboarding course because I kept smudging my papers on the typewriter. :P

  • To think I almost missed it!

    September 19, 2007

  • Ooo! I'm so glad I didn't delete this list.

    September 19, 2007

  • Anybody ever called out "MOM!" at a potluck? You get a lot of eyes. One friend started calling her mom "Mu" just to escape the problem.

    September 19, 2007

  • It's fun to talk to kids about the older computers. I love telling them stories about when computer monitors only had four colors. What really gets them is when I talk about what we did before mouses.

    September 19, 2007

  • I love it!

    September 19, 2007

  • I feel like u and I :) have had this conversation before, although I can't find the reference, so I'll just give y'all the highlights:

    me: Bacon is amazing!

    u: yep.

me: Bacon is about the best thing you can put in your mouth.

    u: yep.

me: Bacon is proof that God loves us.

    u: yep.

    September 19, 2007

  • Subtle.

    September 19, 2007

  • One taillight out was a padunkle. You had to hit the roof of the car with your head.

    September 19, 2007

  • Alas, I am full of woe.

    September 19, 2007

  • Are we going to do all 50 states? We may need to name the genre....

    September 19, 2007

  • You're kidding! I must visit the great state of PA sometime soon.

    September 19, 2007

  • Mine is currently insane.

    September 19, 2007

  • Can somebody explain apple pie with cheddar cheese?

    September 17, 2007

  • D'oh! Good catch.

    September 16, 2007

  • Is this a Forrest Gump reference?

    September 16, 2007

  • Does it have a long or short u?

    September 15, 2007

  • Isn't this what fish (and assorted suckers) reek of right before you real them in?

    September 15, 2007

  • I read icco's comment as, "It's like the site is some new form of crack!" I think that both statements apply. :)

    September 14, 2007

  • Your dictionary cred?

    September 14, 2007

  • I only dreamed of being that hip.

    September 14, 2007

  • Those of us under ten were simply shocked at this revelation. The tooth fairy also drives a really bad chocolate brown van. I have no idea how he makes time for his night job with all that traffic.

Moral of the story: Dads will say anything to make five-year olds shut up.

    September 14, 2007

  • I said cooler. We are, after all, posting on a website about words. ;)

    September 14, 2007

  • I just get down, get down. Never make it to the to.

    September 13, 2007

  • colleen, you are far cooler than I am, chica. I also second that first commandment.

    September 13, 2007

  • On a side note, our family took the World's Longest Road Trip to Canada when I was about eight. My sister was very worried that the Tooth Fairy wouldn't find her in Ontario, but Dad assured her that he was actually based out of Buffalo, and made trips across the border all the time.

    September 13, 2007

  • What!What?What!What?WHAT??!!!

What, that's not a grammatically correct sentence too?

    September 13, 2007

  • Some Jewish gal at work told me about St. Anthony.

    September 13, 2007

  • We need a "kidding" font or something. I was just trying to type up some smart retort, and couldn't figure out how to make it work w/o completely offending somebody. Sometimes the winky face just seems inadequate.

    September 13, 2007

  • I keep meaning to get around to seeing a Bollywood flick. I've heard that they're really good, and I know I'll like the music. Any suggestions?

    September 13, 2007

  • I'm actually at the helm of a rather profitable dessert ring. The feds have been trying to pick me up for ages, but I connections. I bake for people in several different agencies. ;)

    September 13, 2007

  • I'm so surprised! It must be about eight months old and I've never seen it either. What do these other people know that I don't???

    September 13, 2007

  • If it's any comfort, eyeshadow now goes both below and above the eyes. You were just ahead of the times. :)

    September 13, 2007

  • I love your username! :)

    September 12, 2007

  • What I actually need is a dessert intervention. Somebody please take away the pie!

    September 12, 2007

  • The teachers are now keeping the good stuff to themselves! Nuthin' like a good whiff of rubber cement after a long day with the kidos.

    September 11, 2007

  • I just learned that we're not allowed to use it in the classroom anymore. Ah, the good old days.

    September 11, 2007

  • Hey John, this new homepage is pretty awesome. Thought you oughta know.

    September 11, 2007

  • Adorable!

    September 6, 2007

  • June 2008 will be awesometastic.

    September 6, 2007

  • I wrote a rather embarassing paper in college where I confused the generic term "riparian" with the name of a local river, the Rapidan.

    August 31, 2007

  • I really wish that I didn't object to coral jewelry; it's so pretty!

    August 31, 2007

  • Awesome.

    August 30, 2007

  • Ca va bien, merci.

    August 30, 2007

  • Ooo! reestee, feel free to stalk me. uselessness is the only one who ever does and it makes me feel sad. ;)

    August 29, 2007

  • Me too! In middle school, a time of many wildly impossible ideas, I decided that I was going to learn sixteen languages. I am sorry to report that I am still working on language number two!

    August 28, 2007

  • Awww, y'all are too sweet. The room's clean now, if a bit bare, so please carry on!

    August 28, 2007

  • I'm having the same problem. It's planning week, and I'm supposed to be cleaning my room, not checking up on you guys. ;)

    August 28, 2007

  • Sigh. There's the rub. I sometimes find comments hiding at the bottom of my lists months later. I do check the recent comments list on a pretty regular basis. Unless you're away for a week, that will keep you pretty much up to date.

    August 27, 2007

  • "...Got a purty face...."

    August 26, 2007

  • Poor twirl feels left out.

    August 26, 2007

  • Tsk, tsk, tsk.

    August 26, 2007

  • That would be useful. I think that facebook does a good job with their e-mail notification feature.

    August 26, 2007

  • I hate to tell you this, but I can see them too. ;)

    August 26, 2007

  • The problem is that he/she needs to come to Wordie to see that we've posted on his/her page.

    August 26, 2007

  • Hehehehehe. :)

    August 26, 2007

  • Yes, but that's tougher to mock. Still possible, but I'd need to use my brain. ;)

    August 26, 2007

  • There's an old Dave Barry article that touches on the subject. I happen to enjoy the dessert, but I can also appreciate the article. u, you might especially appreciate this one, since it's really about Christmas in Florida.

    August 26, 2007

  • Eh, I wouldn't be a fan.

    August 24, 2007

  • ur so rong an i m so rite

    August 24, 2007

  • Do you think the geese would mind?

    August 24, 2007

  • 'cept they r not rele bearz

    August 24, 2007

  • I really want to add it to my fabulous usernames list, but the user needs to comment or add a word to a list or something. I'm worried that Marzipanda's not coming back! So sad.

    August 24, 2007

  • I happen to love that Faintheart added a scream of sorts. :)

    August 24, 2007

  • I think Oprah popularized this word in one episode.

    August 23, 2007

  • As opposed to 50 Cent's words.

    August 23, 2007

  • Marzipanda, I think you have a great username! Where does it come from? :) jennarenn

    August 23, 2007

  • Those are the best because nobody know if you're actually pronouncing it correctly. Dilettante is another good one for multiple pronunciations.

    August 22, 2007

  • THE uselessness? Like The Donald?

    August 21, 2007

  • This may be one of the best scents on Earth.

    August 21, 2007

  • Rats! ;)

    August 21, 2007

  • TAWVFCI/OP(?)MPB&CSRU!!!

    August 21, 2007

  • Yep. If there's something to mispronouce or misspell, jennarenn's already on it. :-/

    August 21, 2007

  • Methinks ye may be on to something.

    August 21, 2007

  • I have to admit, I saw MadShrubbery's username and smiled as a thousand Monty Python references came to mind.

    August 21, 2007

  • Heaven forbid!

    August 20, 2007

  • Oh, I like this list. I'm not sure that we've had one like it yet.

    August 20, 2007

  • Hey edes, could you tell me a little more about your username? :) jennarenn

    August 20, 2007

  • What if he didn't know he wasn't you?

    August 20, 2007

  • Whew! I'm glad to see that "dangerous" still is a synonym for "dangerous". ;)

    August 20, 2007

  • I'm just trying to keep the site PG, if only for uselessness' sake. ;)

    August 20, 2007

  • I hope you become a Wordie fan too! Check out the comment feed on the right-hand side of the home page. That's where the fun is. :)

    August 20, 2007

  • This list will not die! I have tried to delete it over and over again today. It's kinda creepy. Like kudzu.

    August 20, 2007

  • My best friend had one for years. I always dialed the wrong number and had to try again. Man, I'd forgotten about phones with cords. Remember the extra-long ones that you could use to tie up your little sister? :)

    August 20, 2007

  • Probably. Mrs. Duckworth, my middle-school French teacher, said that it meant today. I'm sure she was just simplifying it for us.

    August 20, 2007

  • My dad, the architectural historian, dragged us to Cape Cod ages ago. I can't believe we missed the Edward Gorey house! I'll have to bug him about it.

    August 20, 2007

  • Ew, ew, ew, ew, EW!!!! Can you just imagine someone else's ear landing on your upper arm or something? Ewewewewew!

    August 20, 2007

  • Austin "Jeopard" Powers. Nah, doesn't have the same ring.

    August 20, 2007

  • Oh, I was out most of last week, but Sera and erinoftheyear admirably stood in my stead. Now all we need is a pun war, and we'll be back in business.

    August 20, 2007

  • Gosh! His books are worth a mint now if you didn't tear all the pop-ups from overuse like my sister and I did. Anybody remember The Dwindling Party?

    August 20, 2007

  • It's funny how just a simple word can make your day. This one made mine. :)

    August 20, 2007

  • Well, I've always been more interested in commenting on lists than creating them, but I've also been downsizing. The upcoming second grade class is a toughie (Ooo! New list genre???), and I'll be needing some extra time to lay some smack down. I have no idea how having fewer lists will keep me off of Wordie, but it fell into my head, so I thought I'd give it a try.

By the way, thanks for the link. It was highly entertaining.

    August 20, 2007

  • These are downright obnoxious when they're too rounded; I can see why they went out of fashion.

    August 20, 2007

  • I think that it always has the short i, but I can see why you'd expect it to rhyme with ivy. Yet another reason why teaching English is harder than it really needs to be.

    August 20, 2007

  • Actually, I think we all timed it rather well. Many of the usual suspects were gone last week.

    August 20, 2007

  • This is surprisingly satisfying to say.

    August 20, 2007

  • This would really shorten my commute.

    August 20, 2007

  • Today.

    August 20, 2007

  • Let the cat out of the bag?

    August 19, 2007

  • tinyfossil, that definition makes me SO happy. I just love quirks that are specific to a particular place. :)

    August 19, 2007

  • Ugh. That is completely tasteless. Not that I approve of them, but at least I understand the purpose of calendars full of nekkid, or nearly nekkid women. I can't imagine anyone buying a calendar of dog piddle.

    August 19, 2007

  • I had a high school chemistry teacher who used to pass out mimeographed worksheets that corresponded with the overhead sheets for that day. At the end of the lesson he collected the (untouched!) worksheets, and filed those overheads away for the next year. This was in the 1990s.

    August 19, 2007

  • This is Dear S? I'd rather eat blue berries *and* wear my seatbelt. Tell him that he should eat the blueberries and skip the okra, or something that's actually gross.

    August 16, 2007

  • I do have a good sense of humor, don't I?

    August 11, 2007

  • I'll get right to work. ;)

    August 11, 2007

  • Not in my county, but Fairfax is known for doing its own thing.

    August 11, 2007

  • Actually, I think English could do with some additional simplification. It would make my job a lot easier! Case in point: /ough/.

    August 10, 2007

  • I like the nickname Jenna, but have never used it. I may need to start. Thank you, seanahan. :)

    August 10, 2007

  • Having taken calculus in both high school and college, I think that standard curriculum really doesn't appeal to the kinesthetic modality. A life goal of mine is to write the new classic, Calculus for the Kinesthetic Learner. Actually understanding the stuff is an intermediate goal that I keep putting off. ;)

    August 10, 2007

  • I think of zounds as an exclaimation, not as an adjective.

    August 10, 2007

  • How is wingnut an animal???

    August 10, 2007

  • Aren't imaginary friends great? I always wanted one as a child.

R, you simply must say hi to Canada for me, and tell them that I'll bring the cookie recipie next time I'm up that way. ;)

    August 10, 2007

  • Ooo! I love scads! Stolen. :)

    August 9, 2007

  • You don't actually *use* this word, do you???

    August 9, 2007

  • Regardless of the spelling, anything fried is pretty American.

    August 9, 2007

  • So...in English what you're saying is that searching for "lists" in the search box will bring me here, but clicking on the word lists in brackets will take me to the list of lists page. Did I get that right?

    August 8, 2007

  • So I was trying to make a pun with Genghis Khan leaving lots of babies, and genghisjohn not leaving lots of words. I thought that issue would work well, but I can't wrap my brain around it right now. Somebody else care to try?

    August 8, 2007

  • Didn't lists connect us to a list of all the lists on wordie just a few days ago? Am I making that up?

    August 8, 2007

  • I happen to love gloaming too.

    August 8, 2007

  • Your username made my day. :)

    August 8, 2007

  • Just when you think you've seen every fabulous username out there, you meet someone like thelivingroom.

    August 8, 2007

  • Isn't this a great one? I discovered it on wordie myself.

    August 8, 2007

  • No matter how tiny thy town, thou shalt name all thy streets and landmarks after thine own self.

Burke Rd., (The other) Burke Rd., Burke Center Pkwy., Burke Lake Rd., Burke Commons Rd., Burke Woods Dr., Burke Towne Ct., Burke View Ave., Col. Silas Burke Park, etc.

    August 7, 2007

  • I have to admit, I think that it's great that your username is sumit and you're talking about people jumping off cliffs. Just thought that it should be noted. :)

    August 6, 2007

  • Ha! I put these in my roll-top desk with the shiny lid.

    August 5, 2007

  • Hey epeuthutebetes,

Is there a story behind your username?

    :) jennarenn

    August 5, 2007

  • Constant comment.

    August 5, 2007

  • You have a fabulous username; is there a story behind it?

    August 5, 2007

  • Or a musician.

    August 4, 2007

  • I'm so sorry I missed this one!!! I'm going to start thinking....

    August 4, 2007

  • It's neat to look at how they've progressed over time.

    August 3, 2007

  • Oh, we used to have so much fun with these as a kid! Whenever my dad pulled up behind a bestickered vehicle, we'd try and figure out as much about the person as possible. During these exchanges, the husband in the car was always referred to as Bubba, and his wife was always called Sweet Thang. :)

    August 3, 2007

  • I feel like I should have heard of this one, but I haven't.

    August 3, 2007

  • I can't believe that I hadn't heard of this before!!! I really like the love triangle they have going on this year.

    August 2, 2007

  • Well, there are fifty-two other definitions to choose from!

    August 2, 2007

  • My mama grew up in Canada, so that theory has possibilities....

    August 2, 2007

  • Much like a pug is an abbreviated dog. I like it!

    August 2, 2007

  • Four vacuum cleaners? Did I read that right?

    August 2, 2007

  • Excellent reestee.

    August 2, 2007

  • I take issue with electrolux. I happen to love mine, and I'm in my mid-twenties.

    July 29, 2007

  • Zzzzz is right. I haven't seen wordie so dead in quite a while.

    July 27, 2007

  • Hey! sherbert is a legitimate spelling. Check out the entry in dictionary.com.

Those Floridians, keepin' us DOWN! ;)

    July 27, 2007

  • You tell 'em! Those words were getting pretty uppity if you ask me.

    July 27, 2007

  • She sounds like quite a woman!

    July 27, 2007

  • I'm happy to play today, or to wait until Monday. It's up to you guys.

    July 27, 2007

  • You made a comment on highly nontrivial that intrigued me. Do you know me in real life, or is my penchant for the ridiculous that obvious?

    July 27, 2007

  • Oh come on, that was excellent! Well done, seanahan.

    July 27, 2007

  • We should also blog about this on Errata. I'm on my way out the door...maybe tomorrow sometime? I'm happy to moderate or play any game.

    July 27, 2007

  • Hooray! What do y'all wanna play?

    July 27, 2007

  • "Dear S" refers to Mr. Slumry?

    July 26, 2007

  • Ah, I'd forgotten about the joys of Nutella. I'll never be thin again.

    July 26, 2007

  • I love how service, temporarily, and unavailable are all in a row.

    July 26, 2007

  • Huh. Wordie really doesn't like "like" (vally girl). Whether I click on it on the home page or in auburnlight's profile, it never takes me to the correct page. Amusing.

    July 26, 2007

  • Really??? Where can I get these marzipan-flavored treats???

    July 26, 2007

  • It saddens me that so many children will no longer experience the pure joy of a fluffer nutter. Peanut butter makes everything better.

    July 26, 2007

  • In the world of dive restaurants, a crummy atmosphere often equals awesome food.

    July 26, 2007

  • Perusers of Potter publications are probably plotting pranks as we speak.

(Yes, I cheated on publications. Whatcha gonna do about it?)

    July 26, 2007

  • Good collection. I almost couldn't find it in the cloud of hyperlinks that your lists comprise.

    July 25, 2007

  • Yes, the Potter patter is petering out.

    July 25, 2007

  • Oh my. (blushing)

    July 25, 2007

  • Yes! reesetee, you're brilliant!!!

    July 25, 2007

  • Whoa, I'm sorry u. I didn't even think about it. r, u, c_b, s...bs just slipped by the censor. Would WS be more acceptable?

    July 25, 2007

  • I love that this word is always plural, like just desserts. Doesn't somebody have a list of these somewhere?

    July 25, 2007

  • Yup, this is how people say it 'round these parts. :) (See sherbet for the whole discussion.)

    July 25, 2007

  • Harry Potter uses one of these in book six. (Sorry u, it's not over yet.)

    July 25, 2007

  • a.k.a. serious lapse in judgement. Oh wait, that would imply having good judgement to being with.

    July 25, 2007

  • BS, have you met Silly Dilly Thoroughly Modern Milly?

    July 25, 2007

  • georgielily, I can usually tell when you add a word because the ones you choose always sound delightful.

    July 25, 2007

  • This is one of those words that I always need to look up. It sounds like it should be spelled furnature. Still gets me after all these years. :P

    July 25, 2007

  • You've always been chatty, but now you have somebody who chats right back. We're all beneficiaries. :)

    July 25, 2007

  • I know! Send him our love, and tell him that I'm sending along that cookie recipe that he asked for. ;)

    July 25, 2007

  • Sher bet. Hahahahahah. You can't be serious. People actually pronounced sherbet. Like a bet?

    July 25, 2007

  • Ah, but your paternal grandmother will never have exactly the same recipes as your mom. All the same, my apologies to Granny Smith. Never meant to imply that she was less than brilliant in the kitchen.

    July 25, 2007

  • How's it supposed to be pronounced? -Miss Mid-Atlantic

    July 25, 2007

  • slumry, I do have to say that you have single-handedly made us all a little more typeractive. Used to be, 60 comments a week was WAY out of the norm. Now, several users regularly get over 100. Not that I'm complaining. :)

    July 25, 2007

  • I think that it's interesting that china (or China?) showed up on the Most Wordied, Last 7 Days list. All of the other words are either slightly esoteric, or at least pretty. Sometimes I wonder what would happen to that list if all of us tried not to steal or repeat words for an entire week. Would it break? Would it choose ten random words? I admit that I'm curious....

    July 25, 2007

  • I didn't know that there was a level below skanky.

    July 25, 2007

  • Make sure you send her our love, and tell her that I'm going to find that cookie recipie that she's been asking for. ;)

    July 25, 2007

  • dictionary lists two pronunciations: biv-oo-ak and biv-wak.

    July 25, 2007

  • *Really*? Like the opposite of a joey?

    July 24, 2007

  • This is my favorite username of the day!

    July 24, 2007

  • There *must* be a story behind this one.

    July 24, 2007

  • Why not?

    July 24, 2007

  • Every time I think that we've named every word under the sun, a new one pops up and reminds me that Wordie is not a dictionary.

    July 24, 2007

  • I find this word downright comical. Probably because the second syllable sounds like whack.

    July 24, 2007

  • That's no good. I know where you keep those!

    July 24, 2007

  • And yes, I do remember the bit o' honey bars. For some reason, I associate them with Cheerios.

    July 24, 2007

  • Sounds like puppy. Strikes fear into the hearts of furniture everywhere.

    July 24, 2007

  • Oh, I'm sorry. It was a 5oz package of marzipan. My tummy protested, but the flesh was weak.

    July 24, 2007

  • Where did he put it, by the road? Some people don't have the sense they were born with.

    July 24, 2007

  • It's quite a day for seated ducks.

    July 24, 2007

  • The ultimate sleep-over activity. Although one *can* brain one's own hair, why wouldst thou bother?

    July 24, 2007

  • Are these words that came to you in the middle of the night?

    July 24, 2007

    July 20, 2007

  • It's another game! :)

    July 20, 2007

  • Even if the links are down, the list is still useful. You can just look up the author of the list and do a little digging.

    July 20, 2007

    July 19, 2007

  • Yes slumry, reddish-blonde. People would hear me describe my roommate's hair as strawberry blonde and interject, "But she isn't blonde! She's a redhead." I change what I said earlier; It *still* drives me crazy.

    July 19, 2007

  • Oh no, I used Lemon Ice two years ago, but now I cannot find it in the stores. Is it still around? Maybe I shouldn't have given up so easily!

    July 12, 2007

  • I love both the flower and the name. :)

  • This is one of those happy, summery words. Just ignore the skin cancer factor.

    July 11, 2007

    July 10, 2007

  • Nice. I tried to think of another one, but came up empty handed.

    July 10, 2007

  • What an adorable word!!! Could you give an example or a reference?

    July 10, 2007

  • Simmer down. There's a way to state your point without attacking somebody.

    July 6, 2007

  • Yep, I think I'm doing everything to make my code as non-wonky as possible. I'm just using the code for hyperlinks that u sent me awhile ago.

But John, no worries. If this means that I "need" to put each hyperlink it its own box, then that'll put me ahead of even slumry in citations for the week. Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha

    July 6, 2007

  • When I was in college, I used to have to visit the delightful ladies in the education office to get offical things embossed with the school insignia. Upon being asked, one secretary would say to the other, "It's time to use the seal," or some such introductory comment. Then both middle-aged women would start whooping. Sometimes hand motions would accompany the performance.

    July 6, 2007

  • The problem is that I can't see any of the text. Instead, I get the new parsing error message. I pressed enter a couple of times and even added some text between the links. Both links worked when I copied them into independent locations. Any ideas?

    July 6, 2007

  • In making my conversations list, I became frustrated because I couldn't include conversations on lists. (Like the one forming here.) I was going to make a list in the list description, but when you put in two links, Wordie gives you an error message. I don't want to make one comment per link, but I don't see any other way. :-/

    July 6, 2007

    July 6, 2007

  • It's a username. I like to collect the interesting ones. There's a link to their lists in the first comment.

    July 6, 2007

  • I think that it's acknowledging that a term exists without deeming it to have actually "entered" English. After all, a real dictionary actually has to do research.

    July 5, 2007

  • I don't think that it's so surprising. The dictionaries' job is to track language as it evolves. I'm sure that they are continually sifting through the web, looking for new words.

    July 5, 2007

  • Christian: India! India! It's set in India! And there's a courtesan, the most beautiful courtesan in all the world. But her kingdom's invaded by an evil Maharaja! July 4, 2007

  • slumry, could you give a reference? I keep picturing the narrator switching stories mid-movie, whilst the actors keep performing according to the original script.

    July 3, 2007

  • Awww. The word alone makes me want to pet it and feed it cheese. Unfortunately, said owlet would appreciate neither the petting, nor the cheese.

  • These things are impossible to kill. I know because I am the Garden Reaper. I am given several potted plants at every holiday which I then subject to periods of neglect, followed by periods of overwatering. Not even the hearty cactus can stand up to my ministrations. In the past year alone I've killed over half a dozen plants, including three consecutive pots of mint. The lone geranium still survives.

    July 3, 2007

  • slumry, you expressed exactly what I meant to. A training bra is for girls who don't quite need to wear a bra yet. It just *looks* like a sports bra.

u, I'm sure you're the resident expert on the Smith clan, but I've never heard of a family name being associated with having more boys or girls in the family. Could you direct us to some more information?

    July 2, 2007

  • u, the ice cream's supposed to be a surprise!!!

slumry, you should try a grills-with. It's two scoops of ice cream on top of two grilled doughnuts. A nice transition. I'm also a fan of a baked Alaska.

    July 2, 2007

  • How does having the last name Smith affect the likelihood of having sons?

    July 2, 2007

  • I cannot breathe...just a minute.

A training bra is a more comfortable version of a sports bra. It's for girls who are just beginning to need one. Personally, I used to forget to wear one, so I always thought that that was the "training" aspect. More recently, I've discovered that there is a "right" way to don a bra, and that way is actually pretty complicated.

  • Oh, chained_bear is much more creative than jennarenn. (I never have quite given up the hope of changing to jentacular.)

    June 29, 2007

  • I used to operate a chlorinator at the local pool. It had to be at least 20 years old, and the pvc pipes would make funny noises when I turned the valves. I was *certain* that one day it was going to explode and I was going to die.

    June 28, 2007

  • I didn't realize that oolite had one.

    June 28, 2007

  • I absolutely read this as bombylicious.

    June 28, 2007

  • I sure know my Ricoh! Is it the same concept?

    June 28, 2007

  • Wow, it's real!!!

    June 27, 2007

  • I am not hatin' on the highjackers. In fact, I quite approve. Life would be rather stale if we knew with certainty that the commentary under any given word was actually pertinent to that word. ;)

    June 27, 2007

  • Also delicious.

    June 27, 2007

  • If I didn't dislike that movie so much, this thread would have made it onto my conversations page long ago.

    June 27, 2007

  • Yes, any form of licorice an absolute favorite in the jennarenn household. Especially black Twizzlers and the now-defunct Liquorice Altoids. Yum!

    June 26, 2007

    June 26, 2007

  • I got a good giggle out of this one. Too bad I don't have some good baritones around when I need them. :P

    June 25, 2007

(I'm with seanahan here. Reese's Pieces are amazing.)

    June 25, 2007

    June 24, 2007

    June 23, 2007

  • One of the attributes of nice is knowing when to keep your mouth shut. :P

    June 22, 2007

  • Oh, nice encompasses all the characteristics a boy requires to date your friend. I don't care about the Stepford Wives, although I would like to know how to use italics (hint hint). Girl talk simply cannot survive without nice.

    June 22, 2007

  • Oh, this is the *hobby horse* page? ;)

    June 22, 2007

    June 21, 2007

  • I love the spelling! You can find their list here.

    June 20, 2007

  • Wait a minute....

    June 20, 2007

  • Because I don't like them as much as stuffies and I never think I do them well. I shall try.

    June 20, 2007

  • Which drives me slightly nuts. I keep wanting to see a list of all the little uselessness easter eggs(?) hidden within the site.

    June 20, 2007

  • I knew who made that suggestion as soon as I saw it on the comment feed. How about a word that's fun to say? Something slightly out of the ordinary, like foible. The masses will never give up trying to impress us with their command of the English language.

    June 20, 2007

  • The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.

He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.

When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.

And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:

"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.

"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.

"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the Devil his due:

"I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you."

The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,

"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been."

  • Does anybody else hear acme and think anvil?

    June 20, 2007

  • slurmy, you're right! I'd thought of this in terms of give and get, but take also works.

    June 20, 2007

  • up the ghost?

    June 20, 2007

  • Easter Egg meaning...hidden quirks?

I wonder if that comes from the google doodle.

    June 20, 2007

  • I'm glad we stopped. Many words ending in a long-e just drive me up the wall. Shoppe pronounced "Shoppy" is one of the prime culprits.

    June 20, 2007

  • you be nice!

    June 20, 2007

    June 20, 2007

    June 20, 2007

  • Ok, so I want to add Juneteenth, but it would seem rather insensitive to put it on a list of "useless" holidays. Any suggestions?

    June 20, 2007

  • Hmmm...maybe I can add this to my holidays list if I change the name.

    June 20, 2007

  • tape!!!

    June 19, 2007

  • it up, and mingle?

    June 19, 2007

  • Well, I think it would be interesting to see the evolution of words listed on the site. I'd imagine that the impressive SAT lists went up first, followed by the categorical lists. The lists of created words are newer.

Yes u, I shot off my mouth w/o thinking. Again. This is why I edit so many comments. The first thing out of my mouth is always the dumbest.

    June 19, 2007

  • Twix fix everything. It's the crack they put in there that does it.

    June 19, 2007

  • Oh, good for you. That would have been more humble. I went with a j.

    June 19, 2007

  • Give me a J!

    Give me an E!

    Give me an N!

    What's that spell?

    Utter perfection, of course. ;)

    June 19, 2007

  • Hmmm, how do I denote that w/o listing all 26 letters?

    June 19, 2007

  • Does anybody else hear the old Kit-kat jingle?

    June 19, 2007

  • Good ones! I'd forgotten how fun stuffies are. :)

    June 19, 2007

  • I added a tunie and a stuffie today.

    June 19, 2007

  • That sounds like that could be time-consuming.

    June 19, 2007

  • Where has this cool little page been hiding? What else don't I know about?

    June 19, 2007

  • I'm not actually adding dates, although that would be a good idea. I just wish that the site would magically start doing this. Helpful, I know.

    June 19, 2007

  • I've been wanting first-added dates on words for some time now. We're almost like archeologists, digging down through the months (!) to the original layers of the site.

    June 19, 2007

  • Cool! What keeps you from adding the same 15 affixes every time?

    June 19, 2007

  • Hi Shirley,

This is pretty much it. I really think of stuffie as a group game, and poetrie got lumped in there.

Junie B. is a ficitious first-grader who is still learning grammar rules. She's written for elementary kids, but I laugh out loud at the books myself. I hope you enjoy her.

    June 19, 2007

  • Really??? (I've been saying that a lot tonight.) I hadn't heard it until a few years ago. Maybe people just don't use it around me.

    June 19, 2007

  • I think that the thing to remember is that the points don't matter, and for that matter don't really exist. When I think about it, poetrie and prosie aren't actually games. Here's a link to the master list.

    June 19, 2007

  • Actually, I think that cherried Coke is darling.

    June 19, 2007

  • REALLY??? The National Statuary Hall just made it onto my to-do list for the summer.

Back in college, there was a "whispering wall" on grounds. It was a semicircular monument that would throw sound for quite a distance.

    June 19, 2007

  • I think our neighborhood was a little *too* suburban. We got a bookmobile once in my memory.

    June 19, 2007

  • I just had to laugh at u. I do get a little jealous when I can't visit for a few days. People are having fun without me!!!!

    June 19, 2007

  • My summer break starts on Wednesday. Unforeseen circumstances will give me a much freer schedule than I'd anticipated, so we could get this moving again. Takers?

    June 17, 2007

  • A few include the "games" stuffie, poetrie, prosie, and democracie (although democracie never really took off).

    June 17, 2007

  • Is this a game or an unfinished list?

    :) Jen

    June 17, 2007

  • Now a woman who'll kiss on a very 1st date,

    Is usually a hussy,

And a woman who'll kiss on the second time out,

    Is anything but fussy,

But a woman who'll wait 'till the 3rd time around,

Head in the clouds, feet on the ground,

    She's the girl he's glad he's found,

    She's his Shipoopi.

    "Shipoopi" from The Music Man

    June 15, 2007

  • Apparently not with brevity.

    June 8, 2007

  • I like this one. :)

    June 8, 2007

  • Yay! I am so delighted to rediscover that this word. Miss Malarkey is a fictional elementary teacher who puts up with a lot of nonsense herself. My favorite book is the original, Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10.

  • But regular Scrabble also has two blank tiles for just such emergencies.

    May 26, 2007

  • As far as I know. We've all done it before--no worries!

    May 26, 2007

  • Hey whichbe, you can actually favorite lists. They appear under your favorites section. I'll use this list as an example.

You'll usually see the creator write an introduction:

The comments section of this list is also a great place to make suggestions for the Wordie site, and discuss Wordie policies in general. Join the fray!

And under this is some tiny writing:

Add this list to your favorites | sort: alpha | order added

In reference to your third request, I don't like the idea of having the first person who adds the word control the conversation. I know that your words are a bit different, because they're created. However, I think that that could easily slide into censorship. There have been prior discussions concerning conversational control, but I can't remember where they are. I seem to remember John falling on the hands-off side of things, but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.

As for your last request, you may have subscribed to a feed for the word. I've never done that, so I can't tell you how to fix it.

    May 26, 2007

    May 25, 2007

  • Oh, but we're not playing Compendium. I was too lazy to think of a name, so I called the list New Game. Suggestions are welcome!

I will clean out round two though, just in case somebody actually wants to use it.

    May 25, 2007

  • Thanks for the reference! I absolutely couldn't remember where it was from. Ok, 1834 is not archaic, but so many phrases are written into church songs, prayers, etc. and then petrified. For example, modern writers don't use 'thee' or 'thou', but we read them in church writings all the time (well, some churches). I can't imagine many people today using 'whelm', so I think of it as fossilized.

That being said, it would be cool to bring it back.

    May 25, 2007

  • Sorry, I finally read Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so now I get Babelfish jokes. (See why men need telepathy?)

    May 25, 2007

  • How about a senseless devotion to the useless pastime of one's choice?

    May 25, 2007

  • And now I get the joke. :) Good book, and a good word.

    May 24, 2007

  • Sweet! What does it mean?

    May 24, 2007

  • I think I've heard of it used to describe "a whelming flood." Probably a frozen fragment of language rather than an actual, modern word.

    May 24, 2007

  • I think that you may have been the first person I've seen collect more than 100 comments in a week. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

    May 24, 2007

  • That's adorable! How about, "Cobbs, that salad was delicious!"

    May 24, 2007

    May 23, 2007

  • Huh. Could you give us another example?

    May 23, 2007

  • I wonder how that works for teachers. I'm mentally starting to count everybody I know by name. Is this only facial recognition?

    May 23, 2007

  • This is actually what "You've Got Mail" was based on. I liked the original much better.

    May 23, 2007

  • For your edification: I was associating "dropping like flies" (connoting lots of people) with the literal death that a fly would meet on a frog's tongue which I associated with the phrase "you're killing me". So, a backwards way of saying I appreciated the joke. I guess that post needed a ;) for lack normal auditory cues.

    May 23, 2007

  • These are great! Thanks for the break. :)

  • Friday works for me. 4-4:30pm, EST? Anyone? I've said it before: you *know* you don't get work done on Friday afternoons.

    May 22, 2007

  • Well, it was....

    May 22, 2007

  • Yes, any word that includes those three letters. Tobacco would be fine, as would tack, catatonic, etc.

We could either score one point per word, or one point per target letter.

    May 22, 2007

  • Ooo! I saw a new game at the store the other day. You choose three letters and players try to come up with as many words as they can using those letters. I feel as though somebody may have mentioned it before, but it's been awhile. What do you think?

    May 20, 2007

  • No worries. We love the site, quirks and all. And yes, that is a *fabulous* first sentence. I wish I knew which one was the grand-prize winner.

    May 20, 2007

  • Anybody know how to change the order of your lists once you've made them? The only way I've found is to create a new list and transfer the words one...at...a...time.

    May 19, 2007

  • Oh yes. Much better to make up a new word than fit a square word into a round hole.

    May 12, 2007

  • I always view words with the thought of how well a second-grader could sound them out. This one fits squarely in the heinous category.

    May 12, 2007

  • Ha! I actually own the Hitchhiker omnibus edition. It's on the to-read list for this summer. Maybe I'll bump it up to the front of the queue.

    May 12, 2007

  • How do you think it's pronounced?

    May 11, 2007

  • I love your list names. How about a pinch? a handbreadth?

    May 11, 2007

  • Yes, but that makes no sense. How can a color be intelligent?

    May 11, 2007

  • u, I'm with reesetee on this one.

    May 10, 2007

  • LOL. I absolutely thought I was going to find a Disney character list or something. Very interesting.

    May 9, 2007

  • You've *heard* somebody pronounce it that way?! Ugh!!!

    May 9, 2007

  • I can't figure it out! Would you care to explain a little further? :)

    May 8, 2007

  • That *is* impressive.

    May 5, 2007

  • paperkingdoms sounds so pretty. I envision a Victorian family vacationing at the beach, collecting shells and cutting out paper dolls.

    May 4, 2007

  • Eek! Swimming pools in private homes freak me out. Sounds like a pefect setting for a real-life game of Clue! (While we're on the subject, that movie has great costumes. Miss Peacock is in muted rust, Mrs. White is in all black, etc.)

    May 4, 2007

  • Really?! I want one.

    May 3, 2007

  • I've been told that these are actually against building code. Not that that keeps me from wanting one!

    May 3, 2007

    May 3, 2007

  • I honestly didn't think that it was real.

    May 3, 2007

  • Ok, so it's the same in England and Virginia. It's just another city; I never give it a second thought.

    May 3, 2007

  • If we figure it out, do we win a prize? Is this the next game for WordPlay?!

How on earth does it exist without anybody listing it?

    May 3, 2007

  • Oh, lol. I didn't get the joke. I thought that it was *supposed* to rhyme. I guess I should have clarified, is this chant for a soccer team in England?

    May 3, 2007

  • Awesome.

    May 3, 2007

  • Twas a pact forged in ages long past that the marauding Heidi shall ner again dominate with her iron and wood, nor with her soldiers and roads. And indeed, any settler who does not summon his resources to defend Katan (sic) from her grasping hand should take heed, for the common good of all is at stake! And so it is with heavy heart, that I must report from the front line that clan B--- cannot hope to fight this latest battle. They are yet to weary from weeks of travel, there is no food in their huts, many are sick, and the evil smell of the open road still clings to all their garments. And even as my scribe writes this, I am imprisoned behind bars of parchmentwork that have accumulated in my absence, baring my exit 'till the last embers of the fire die late in the evening. But to those who do battle, I say fight bravely! You hold the very fate of Katan in your hands.

    ~Emissary B---

    May 2, 2007

  • I do have to ask, what do you like about Ohio?

    May 2, 2007

  • Seriously, kids' cartoons have gotten a lot less innocent. I miss my SheRa, my Jem, Transformers, et al.

  • Fabulous list. I'm just jealous that I didn't think of it first!

    April 28, 2007

  • Ooo! I will use this when I teach my cricket unit in September. *That* is why it needs a name.

    April 28, 2007

  • There are no rules yet...but we need to come up with something. I just discovered that you can search all comments under the Recent Comments page. It even works with strings of letters. I've tried love, vivi, and acq so far. Some of the comment strings are really interesting.

    April 28, 2007

  • ellenw, the problem with a megalist is that it would take a long time to load. Some lists have already crashed computers as is.

John, I was wondering if there was some way to add extra organization to the favorites page. I'm up to 50, and it's getting tough to navigate through them all.

    Thanks again!

  • Cool, thanks u. Also, thanks for saying straight up that something made you uncomfortable. Being a girl, I like to think that have the low-down on sketchy, but clearly not. I'll remove most of the comments tonight.

    April 27, 2007

  • Well, I wanted people to be able to see the users' profiles. Since I don't know how to link to their profiles, I have to go fish some uncommon word out of their lists. There's nothing on there that they haven't put out themselves, and nothing that is one could use to identify them in real life. If *somebody* would teach me how to link to profiles, I could dispense with the comments.

    April 27, 2007

  • I should have taken this username.

    April 26, 2007

  • Oh, I like this poem.

    April 26, 2007

  • I just wish we had a better way of *finding* them. The words are the connections, but that's so hit or miss. Today I'm trying to find elbowcrannies, but I can't remember which word lead me to their profile. I'd love to ramble through a list of users, beyond the top-hundred lists. John?

    April 26, 2007

  • Yes! Where do marbles come from? I never buy them, but they keep cropping up underfoot.

Do you ever feel like there are about fifteen of us actually using the site, for make benefit of the glorious rest of the world?

    April 26, 2007

    April 26, 2007

    April 26, 2007

  • Really? What words have they listed?

    April 25, 2007

  • Excellent! Thank you.

    April 25, 2007

  • There is currently a lost stuffie under construction. :)

    April 25, 2007

  • Ok, I *just* now got the double entendre behind "stuffie." Embarrassing.

    April 24, 2007

  • trivet brings up a good point. Most stuffies are burried in uselessness' lists, but I know of at least one other random one besides my own. Is there a way we can organize or interconnect all the stuffies? uselessness, I don't know how to make links to lists, but maybe we could put a list of links under Wordplay? I think that they're a kind of game in themselves.

trivet, if you're not up for a lost stuffie, let me know. I happen to enjoy them.

    April 24, 2007

  • You guys make me smile. (And I'm using America. It's simply too cute!)

I'm still thinking about things that go missing. Hmmm...kinda fishy. Maybe that could be a different list.

    April 24, 2007

  • You are absolutely correct socktopus!

    April 24, 2007

  • There simply isn't a good word for the concept. Still, smiting such a useful word for one little usage? I'm saddened.

    April 24, 2007

  • Lol! SonofGroucho, I agree. This is my new favorite username, although we should ask danceswithtrout why he or she doesn't like the word they. I'm simply baffled.

    April 21, 2007

  • Wow, cryptonym is a great word! Go ask John to add it in.

    April 20, 2007

  • Sparble means to scatter. The one time I heard it, it was in the context of houses being "sparbled around."

    April 20, 2007

  • I have been LOOKING for this word for ~ a year. I heard some old-timer use it last spring, but I misheard it as scarble. reid_burkland, you made my day!!!!

  • First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

  • I slogged through the Hobbit, but came to the same conclusion. The modern reader (me) is too used to instant gratification.

    February 21, 2007

  • Abraxas, Gmail *is* the shizzle. You are completely forgiven for your preoccupation with the best e-mail application ever.

  • fbharjo would fancy this fantastic fount of F words.

    February 21, 2007

  • F is a fine fellow. He frolics among the freesias in fine form.

    February 21, 2007

  • I happen to like aa. So fun to say!

    February 21, 2007

  • Where exactly does ennui fit in with the rest of this list?

    February 20, 2007

  • or a cappella.

    February 20, 2007

  • chained_bear, wasn't it your lists that reportedly crashed computers? I think that that's worthy of a little heckling. Besides, I've never seen stpeter make a comment. It's no fun he's not gonna rise to the bait.

    February 20, 2007

  • reesetee, forgive me if I gave any such impression. One can *never* love one's words too much. It's just that some lists should come with warning labels, as should some comments. ;)

    February 19, 2007

  • Ok, if we're keeping it strictly to titles, then it could be manageable. However, if the witch doctor keeps telling me what to do, I'll throw something. Get it OUT of my HEAD.

    February 19, 2007

  • Clearly, I need to watch Ace Ventura again.

    February 19, 2007

  • There are a zillion nonsense syllables. That list would be even longer than chained_bear's Favorite Words. :P You go right ahead. I'll just watch.

    February 19, 2007

  • See? This list is already too long. You nominated 13 words, and I've only added 10 of them. I'm vetoing one, so there are two words unaccounted for. By the time I scroll between the comment and the top of the list, my poor little brain has forgotten which words I was supposed to be remembering.

    February 19, 2007

  • Really? I don't remember that part. Of course, I haven't watched that movie since I grew up. Oh...wait....

    February 19, 2007

  • Ok, thanks for the confirmation. We weren't sure. I have such a poor memory for music that my vote counts -1.

    February 19, 2007

  • NOT go in there could open a whole 'nother can of worms.

    Do...

    NOT spit

    NOT run

    NOT hit

    NOT pick your nose

    NOT stand on that bookshelf

    NOT do ___________

etc. I have said all of these to children at one time or another. This list could go on forever.

    February 19, 2007

  • Uh, I don't think we were thinking of the same song. Roomie says that Brown Eyed Girl is Sha-la-la. We were thinking of the one that goes, "There she was, just-a walkin' down the street...."

    February 19, 2007

  • Mmmm, uselessness, some of these are skating on thin ice. I dunno....

    February 19, 2007

  • Do you happen to talk like a pirate? We could always use another freebooter around these parts. ;)

    February 19, 2007

  • How are we to participate?

    February 19, 2007

  • There is debate in the jennarenn house as to the actual name of the aforementioned song. Anybody know it off the top of their head?

    February 19, 2007

  • It took me a minute, but wah diddy is most excellent. I took the liberty of adding another diddy. Hope you don't mind.

    February 19, 2007

  • There is an official song. I am at a loss for words.

    http://www.pepero.co.kr/img/flash/ani/ani03.swf

    February 19, 2007

  • Aww, Pepero Day is just a marketing ploy fabricated by a corporation. It gives me the warm fuzzies.

    February 19, 2007

  • Pepero day?

    Sounds utterly useless.

    February 19, 2007

  • Art? I'm not sure about martial arts either. Fortunately, my roommate is into both of these, so I shall consult an outside expert. But the rest are really good. Thanks :)

    February 19, 2007

  • There are a lot of stuffies. I don't think I saw one with do, but please feel free to let me know (with fire and brimstone if necessary) if I have erred.

    February 19, 2007

  • Mmmmmm, dictionary.com doesn't agree, and they know everything. ;)

    February 19, 2007

  • Yar! I hadn't heard of freebooter, but I am certainly going to use it next Talk Like a Pirate Day. Whenever that is.

    February 19, 2007

  • Actually, it's much easier to read. I like it.

    February 19, 2007

  • Oh, are you talking about those little silver balls?

    February 19, 2007

  • Actually, Esperanto was my inspiration. Silly young thing that I was, I wanted to see if I could do it too.

    February 19, 2007

  • It's been awhile since a list made me laugh out loud. How about three snaps up? BTW, uselessness, your link to pbpbpbpbpb doesn't work. Now I need to see that thread.

    February 19, 2007

  • otolaryngology? oncology?

    February 19, 2007

  • Oooo! When I saw powderpuff and creampuff on the front page feed I knew that someone was up to something. What about plain old tiff?

    February 19, 2007

  • Palooka, you are already a list artist. There is no better outlet for all that creativity than wordie.

    February 19, 2007

  • You used this in hangman? Ooooh, that is pure evil. Was the person a professed logophile or know-it-all?

    February 19, 2007

  • I didn't actually run a search (we ought to mention that to John), I just ran across it in my habitual (and slightly obsessive) perusing of the site.

I don't think anybody in this feed meant to offend, although I could see how offense could be taken. My apologies.

    February 19, 2007

  • Found it! Search for the word questioning. kodaz is the only one who's listed it. It can be found on their queer words list. :)

    February 15, 2007

  • You can also use your knuckles. Start at the left knuckle on your left hand. That's January. It has 31 days. Next, point to the space between that knuckle and the following. That's February. It has fewer than 31 days. March, May, and July round out the knuckles on the left hand. April and June are in the spaces. After July, you switch to your right hand and August is on your first knuckle. Etc., etc., etc. I promise that it's easier than it sounds.

    February 15, 2007

  • My friend uses this word when everything is right with the world. :)

    February 15, 2007

  • I can guarantee that you won't find the word "timesed (not a real word, but annoying anyway)" in the dictionary. ;) What you want to do is enter timesed as a word and put your commentary (not a real word, but annoying anyway) on the page for that word.

    February 14, 2007

  • Wow. You poor thing, you've never had a funnel cake. Think of a fritter, think of a hot doughnut, think of those little drips of waffle batter that always hang off the sides of the waffle. You haven't *lived* until you've had a funnel cake.

    February 13, 2007

  • Hey Ecrivaine33,

I noticed that you commented on wordie games awhile ago. Just wanted to let you know that some of us are using the username WordPlay to kick around some lists. Feel free to join in the fun!

    February 13, 2007

  • Abraxas, where did you teach?

    February 13, 2007

  • Tee-hee. You'd be surprised if you knew who I was in cahoots with. Seriously, does anybody have any suggestions? This project is very new.

    February 12, 2007

  • Good one! Thanks, fbharjo.

    February 12, 2007

  • Yeah, a boy named Phlox would certainly make it onto my list of unfortunate names.

    February 12, 2007

  • As a name, this wasn't so bad until Lord of the Rings. Poor girl.

    February 12, 2007

  • Thank you, it *is* a lovely trophy; I'll make sure to keep it polished.

    February 12, 2007

  • "A phlox on both your houses!!"

    oh, wait....

    February 11, 2007

  • The Olympic and the Britannic were sister ships to the Titanic. Hercules or Global Warmer would also be apt names.

    February 11, 2007

  • Actually a common name in some parts of the world. Just try not to think about noodles.

    February 11, 2007

  • Yeeah, I don't think accuracy was the point.

    February 11, 2007

  • It would be tough to go through life as Djibouti.

    February 11, 2007

  • Her name is pronounced "Trillion", but it's written out as "10^10". I doubt that my kids will have the mojo to carry off 10^10, but it is the coolest name, ever.

    February 11, 2007

  • His name is pronounced "Seven", but it's written out as "7" on his birth certificate.

    February 11, 2007

  • Holly is a regular name. Wood is a regular name. Her parents must have a great sense of humor.

    February 11, 2007

  • Cafeteria is a girl.

    February 11, 2007

  • So, we all read the dictionary.com word of the day? :)

    February 11, 2007

  • I'm willing to bet that schadenfreude stays on the most wordied, past seven days list because it is always listed on the homepage. Akimbo went through a similar period.

    February 11, 2007

  • The Zwieback Motel is also mentioned in the Dr. Seuss Sleep Book.

    February 11, 2007

  • Hey, check out WordPlay's profile. :)

    February 11, 2007

    February 11, 2007

  • Well, I think that we’d have to allow for Internet searches, since we couldn’t prevent them. One person comes up with a category that’s bound to be limited. This person will judge for that round and cannot play. Each person has 24 hours to put together a list. I wish we could do a group list, but I don’t think wordie allows that yet. Eventually, that would be the ideal.

    February 10, 2007

  • I first ran across this word while working in a reading group with my second grade students. Who writes for seven- and eight-year olds with an archaic word like quern?

    February 10, 2007

  • Well, absent is in most of the online dictionaries as a transitive verb. Dictionary.com even uses the example of absenting oneself from a meeting. It’s pretty formal. I’ve heard it only a few times in real life, usually coming from an English teacher. :)

    February 10, 2007

  • We study the Native Americans in the second grade. Would you mind noting which words are of Hopi origin?

    February 10, 2007

  • Ooo! School fight songs.

    February 10, 2007

  • Oh, I would say that scrabble means that the word has to be legal in the game Scrabble. That does limit play, because I couldn't use Falling Water in the aforementioned architecture game. Although to be fair, the game does have to end sometime.

    February 9, 2007

  • Like, I would say architecture, and edwardvielmetti would say house, Ecrivaine33 would say window, uselessness would say column, AbraxasZugzwang would say door, and we'd just keep going around until somebody broke?

Does firstflickr mean that we can use pictures?

When do we know that somebody gives up? How do we know who's playing?

    February 9, 2007

  • You can absent yourself from a meeting, etc. The fact that it's not usually used in that sense is what makes that one so neat. :)

    February 8, 2007

  • chai tea?

    February 8, 2007

  • Dare we ask?

    February 8, 2007

  • I got as far as making a list of verbs that I needed to work on. :) I realized that no matter what system I used, it would still be based on either English or French. After that, the whole thing seem phony. I just love A verbs for the memories.

    February 8, 2007

  • Yes, but "Is this for y'all?" defeats the whole point of saving half a second.

    February 8, 2007

  • Oooo! Can we choose alpha to be the default??? I'd prefer that. Please show me how!

    February 8, 2007

  • Well I love her

    But I love to fish

I spend all day out on this lake

And hell is all I catch

But today she met me at the door

Said I would have to choose

If I hit that fishin hole today

She'd be packin all her things

And she'd be gone by noon

    Chorus:

    Well I'm gonna miss her

    When I get home...etc.

    February 7, 2007

  • How do we pronounce this gem?

    February 7, 2007

  • I always use "y'all". There was some commotion at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta b/c somebody held up a sign spelled ya'll. You just don't *do* that in the South. Personally, I have always wondered about the possessive. Is it y’all’s and all y'alls'?

    February 7, 2007

  • I might have named this list "Why, God?" instead.

    February 7, 2007

  • Oh my. I just noticed that it's found in the Concise Dictionary of Soviet Terminology. That's just too funny.

  • Were you in fife & drum?

    February 7, 2007

  • Yay! Yes, you can. It's the bouncy swing you see at weddings and cotillions.

Did you go to the "media" section of that website? Turn off the music at the top video and find the routine from Swingdiego. Amazing!

    February 7, 2007

  • I promise that west coast is a type of swing dance. Check it out here:
