Ooo! Can somebody versed in graphic design put out the Wordie version of a Google doodle? I know that it would be completely useless, but I think that a birthday necessitates a little frivolity. Not that I'm thinking of anyone in particular....
Yeah, just looked at my own lists for the first time in ages. I think what was throwing me off is that you changed the name of your Bird Wirds list or something.
Picture a custodian in his 50s high-fiving kids and telling them "It's ALL good!" Mr. X walks around like he’s got the best job on Earth. I used to be a naysayer, but then my perspective changed.
HATE, HATE, HATE!!!! But only when applied to pants. I cannot begin to express how much I disliked stirrup pants, even when they were in fashion. They press on your knees in the most unpleasant way.
OH MY WORD, there are definitions on the word pages!!! Every time I take a day or two off, the place completely changes. Our little Wordie is growing up so fast.
Oh my goodness! A friend and I stopped by this tiny convenience store in the mountains of South Carolina. There was a bulletin board by the door simply plastered in Polaroids of terminated turkeys and deceased deer. Each photo was labeled with the animal's size and the hunter's name. This was also the store where we saw the KKK bumper sticker. Sketchy....
I love this list. I kinda hate that I love this list, but it's wonderfully funny! It reminds me of that country act, Big & Rich. They have the worst songs, and I enjoy them all. :)
I did find the following delightful notes at the end of "Deconstructing Astronomy's Holy Grail" by Steve Nadis (AIR May/June 2006).
2. I can't cite any official "source" for this statement, but trust me, it's true.
3. Hinted at (though not explicitly detailed) in the aforementioned "In Search of the Holy Grail," Annals of Improbable Research, March/April 1996, pp. 4-6...
21. Reference unknown; lost by the editor of this journal (though he is certain to deny it and cast blame elsewhere--on a surrogate, perhaps).
22. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle never wrote this mystery but surely would have had there been an additional installment in the Sherlock Holmes saga.
23. You can be sure I have much more to say on this subject, but my editor is kind of stingy when it comes to "word count." Fortunately, he tends to get tired by the end of a wearying article like this and, as a result, inattentive. If you are reading this note, you can be sure he never got this far. His loss is our gain.
Tee-hee. There were other footnotes, but they weren't funny.
moritherapy, you might want to click on the word struwwelpeter and leave your comment there too. Lots of cool conversations happen on the words themselves, and you don't want to miss out. :)
My personal term for all that God created to help tighten up those arteries. Some examples include bacon, hush puppies, apple fritters with powdered sugar, fried chicken, and homemade doughnuts.
I'm way behind in my reading, so I just read your post John. In fact, I did a rather embarassing little dance. I've been *wanting* a wordie t-shirt. Particularly anything I can wear in front of other people's kids. If we're taking requests, I would be up for a stuffie shirt. :)
In addition to my conversations list, check out chit-chat and idle chatter. Right now they're organized by legnth, but that needs to be redone. I'll turn it in with my TPS report.
I have a student named Quinn this year. I've been playing Quinn the Eskimo in my head ever since planning week. Every time I call the child's name, it starts over.
I am afraid that I may be out of The Loop as well. We'll just start our own loop. One that maybe can work on my work maybe not blocking wordie during work hours. Just a thought.
Frankly, I'm not a fan, although I do appreciate the creativity it took to say, "hey, let's take that delicious, crispy cabbage and soak it in yucky vinegar for several months," similar to the creativity it requires to keep a sentence aloft through endless phrases, clauses, and comma-splices, like a balloon batted aloft by a group of bored adolescents late at night.
My school computer security system has BLOCKED WORDIE!!! I'm rather upset, especially since the comments page has exploded recently. I'll never keep up once slumry returns!!!
It's actually a play for two actors that has half a dozen characters. The actors will just suddenly change their posturing, and you know that they're a different character. It was some of the best acting I've seen in real life, but not one of the better plays. It's a bit of a downer.
I think your daugh taught a few things to my cat. Fluffy Snowflake was almost bigger than Madison was, but that didn't prevent him for carrying it around by the tummy. No idea how that cat saugh where he was going.
I agree with c_b. My sense of humor is difficult to translate into the written word, so I often edit or delete my comments. I always leave my stuff after somebody else has replied to it.
Myzeld! My AP English teacher talked about that mispronunciation. It had never occured to me, but it make so much sense. (Ooo! Ooo! Do I get to complain about how badly the English alphabet sucks???)
At a recent family wedding, one of the uncles let slip that my mom, the health nut, knows how to make doughnuts from scratch. She's been holding out on us all these years.
I bet slumry is suffering from exhaustion. Keeping at the top of the comment list isn't for the faint of heart. ;) I did always think that there was a real life connection between you and c_b. Is that untrue?
It's fun to talk to kids about the older computers. I love telling them stories about when computer monitors only had four colors. What really gets them is when I talk about what we did before mouses.
Those of us under ten were simply shocked at this revelation. The tooth fairy also drives a really bad chocolate brown van. I have no idea how he makes time for his night job with all that traffic.
Moral of the story: Dads will say anything to make five-year olds shut up.
On a side note, our family took the World's Longest Road Trip to Canada when I was about eight. My sister was very worried that the Tooth Fairy wouldn't find her in Ontario, but Dad assured her that he was actually based out of Buffalo, and made trips across the border all the time.
We need a "kidding" font or something. I was just trying to type up some smart retort, and couldn't figure out how to make it work w/o completely offending somebody. Sometimes the winky face just seems inadequate.
I'm actually at the helm of a rather profitable dessert ring. The feds have been trying to pick me up for ages, but I connections. I bake for people in several different agencies. ;)
Me too! In middle school, a time of many wildly impossible ideas, I decided that I was going to learn sixteen languages. I am sorry to report that I am still working on language number two!
Sigh. There's the rub. I sometimes find comments hiding at the bottom of my lists months later. I do check the recent comments list on a pretty regular basis. Unless you're away for a week, that will keep you pretty much up to date.
There's an old Dave Barry article that touches on the subject. I happen to enjoy the dessert, but I can also appreciate the article. u, you might especially appreciate this one, since it's really about Christmas in Florida.
I really want to add it to my fabulous usernames list, but the user needs to comment or add a word to a list or something. I'm worried that Marzipanda's not coming back! So sad.
My best friend had one for years. I always dialed the wrong number and had to try again. Man, I'd forgotten about phones with cords. Remember the extra-long ones that you could use to tie up your little sister? :)
Well, I've always been more interested in commenting on lists than creating them, but I've also been downsizing. The upcoming second grade class is a toughie (Ooo! New list genre???), and I'll be needing some extra time to lay some smack down. I have no idea how having fewer lists will keep me off of Wordie, but it fell into my head, so I thought I'd give it a try.
By the way, thanks for the link. It was highly entertaining.
I think that it always has the short i, but I can see why you'd expect it to rhyme with ivy. Yet another reason why teaching English is harder than it really needs to be.
Ugh. That is completely tasteless. Not that I approve of them, but at least I understand the purpose of calendars full of nekkid, or nearly nekkid women. I can't imagine anyone buying a calendar of dog piddle.
I had a high school chemistry teacher who used to pass out mimeographed worksheets that corresponded with the overhead sheets for that day. At the end of the lesson he collected the (untouched!) worksheets, and filed those overheads away for the next year. This was in the 1990s.
This is Dear S? I'd rather eat blue berries *and* wear my seatbelt. Tell him that he should eat the blueberries and skip the okra, or something that's actually gross.
Having taken calculus in both high school and college, I think that standard curriculum really doesn't appeal to the kinesthetic modality. A life goal of mine is to write the new classic, Calculus for the Kinesthetic Learner. Actually understanding the stuff is an intermediate goal that I keep putting off. ;)
So...in English what you're saying is that searching for "lists" in the search box will bring me here, but clicking on the word lists in brackets will take me to the list of lists page. Did I get that right?
So I was trying to make a pun with Genghis Khan leaving lots of babies, and genghisjohn not leaving lots of words. I thought that issue would work well, but I can't wrap my brain around it right now. Somebody else care to try?
I have to admit, I think that it's great that your username is sumit and you're talking about people jumping off cliffs. Just thought that it should be noted. :)
Oh, we used to have so much fun with these as a kid! Whenever my dad pulled up behind a bestickered vehicle, we'd try and figure out as much about the person as possible. During these exchanges, the husband in the car was always referred to as Bubba, and his wife was always called Sweet Thang. :)
Huh. Wordie really doesn't like "like" (vally girl). Whether I click on it on the home page or in auburnlight's profile, it never takes me to the correct page. Amusing.
Ah, but your paternal grandmother will never have exactly the same recipes as your mom. All the same, my apologies to Granny Smith. Never meant to imply that she was less than brilliant in the kitchen.
slumry, I do have to say that you have single-handedly made us all a little more typeractive. Used to be, 60 comments a week was WAY out of the norm. Now, several users regularly get over 100. Not that I'm complaining. :)
I think that it's interesting that china (or China?) showed up on the Most Wordied, Last 7 Days list. All of the other words are either slightly esoteric, or at least pretty. Sometimes I wonder what would happen to that list if all of us tried not to steal or repeat words for an entire week. Would it break? Would it choose ten random words? I admit that I'm curious....
It's funny, I live right near a state line, and the disbelief is still hard to overcome. Maryland seems *forever* away, but sure, I'll trek an hour into DC.
I think that your previous comment tells me everything I need to know, but thank you. I'm still going to be wondering, but I'm 100% positive that I'm happier not knowing. :)
Can't you just imagine some trashy romance novelist getting ahold of this word? (Yes, I know it's not that kind of cleavage, but still...that's where your mind goes.) ;)
slumry has always been a bit of a maverick. This is the woman who made lists without words, and logged more than 300 comments in one week. Why not four brainstorms? ;)
Yes slumry, reddish-blonde. People would hear me describe my roommate's hair as strawberry blonde and interject, "But she isn't blonde! She's a redhead." I change what I said earlier; It *still* drives me crazy.
Thanks u, that site made my day. I wonder if it's only 404 error messages.
And one of my new favorites:
You requested a page, and we looked for it. We sent our best man, "Speedy the Wonderhamster," on a chase to find the file you requested at lightning speed! He got run over by a steamroller. Thus, the page or file you are trying to reach was not found on Redstroke.com. If you typed the name in yourself, please ensure you typed it in correctly and try again. If you followed it as a link from another page, please inform the webmaster of that site of the error. If you believe this is an error on Redstroke.com's part, or if you do not know the correct address of the page you want to reach, contact me and explain that you received "error 404". Include the page you were trying to reach, and help with the problem will be mailed back to you. Speedy, unfortunately, is beyond help.
Yes! Exactly arby! Even today I find that I may not use the first word that comes to mind because I learned it in a book and I'm not 100% sure about the pronunciation. I mispronounced dawdle forever!
John, you are awesome. We bring up these little things only to trouble-shoot amongst ourselves, never to take you to task. :) (Not that we ever object to improvements--just to any guilt on your part.)
I'm struggling against it. Unfortunately, I have a family history of stuffocation. Just this spring, we saw the carpet in my father's office for the first time since 1988. Scary.
Yep, I think I'm doing everything to make my code as non-wonky as possible. I'm just using the code for hyperlinks that u sent me awhile ago.
But John, no worries. If this means that I "need" to put each hyperlink it its own box, then that'll put me ahead of even slumry in citations for the week. Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha
When I was in college, I used to have to visit the delightful ladies in the education office to get offical things embossed with the school insignia. Upon being asked, one secretary would say to the other, "It's time to use the seal," or some such introductory comment. Then both middle-aged women would start whooping. Sometimes hand motions would accompany the performance.
The problem is that I can't see any of the text. Instead, I get the new parsing error message. I pressed enter a couple of times and even added some text between the links. Both links worked when I copied them into independent locations. Any ideas?
In making my conversations list, I became frustrated because I couldn't include conversations on lists. (Like the one forming here.) I was going to make a list in the list description, but when you put in two links, Wordie gives you an error message. I don't want to make one comment per link, but I don't see any other way. :-/
I think that it's acknowledging that a term exists without deeming it to have actually "entered" English. After all, a real dictionary actually has to do research.
I don't think that it's so surprising. The dictionaries' job is to track language as it evolves. I'm sure that they are continually sifting through the web, looking for new words.
Christian: India! India! It's set in India! And there's a courtesan, the most beautiful courtesan in all the world. But her kingdom's invaded by an evil Maharaja! Now, in order to save her kingdom, she has to seduce the evil Maharaja. But on the night of the seduction, she mistakes a penniless po- a penniless- a penniless sitar player for the evil Maharaja and she falls in love with him! He wasn't trying to trick her or anything, but he was dressed as a Maharaja because... he's appearing in a play!
slumry, could you give a reference? I keep picturing the narrator switching stories mid-movie, whilst the actors keep performing according to the original script.
These things are impossible to kill. I know because I am the Garden Reaper. I am given several potted plants at every holiday which I then subject to periods of neglect, followed by periods of overwatering. Not even the hearty cactus can stand up to my ministrations. In the past year alone I've killed over half a dozen plants, including three consecutive pots of mint. The lone geranium still survives.
slumry, you expressed exactly what I meant to. A training bra is for girls who don't quite need to wear a bra yet. It just *looks* like a sports bra.
u, I'm sure you're the resident expert on the Smith clan, but I've never heard of a family name being associated with having more boys or girls in the family. Could you direct us to some more information?
slumry, you should try a grills-with. It's two scoops of ice cream on top of two grilled doughnuts. A nice transition. I'm also a fan of a baked Alaska.
A training bra is a more comfortable version of a sports bra. It's for girls who are just beginning to need one. Personally, I used to forget to wear one, so I always thought that that was the "training" aspect. More recently, I've discovered that there is a "right" way to don a bra, and that way is actually pretty complicated.
I used to operate a chlorinator at the local pool. It had to be at least 20 years old, and the pvc pipes would make funny noises when I turned the valves. I was *certain* that one day it was going to explode and I was going to die.
I am not hatin' on the highjackers. In fact, I quite approve. Life would be rather stale if we knew with certainty that the commentary under any given word was actually pertinent to that word. ;)
Oh, nice encompasses all the characteristics a boy requires to date your friend. I don't care about the Stepford Wives, although I would like to know how to use italics (hint hint). Girl talk simply cannot survive without nice.
Yeah, I've always been a little nervous about the RSS feed. Am I signing up for a life-time of wordie spam? (uselessness has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.) (uselessness has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.)(slumry has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.)(uselessness has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.)(uselessness has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.)(reestee has listed one new comment. Please log on to see the comment.), etc.
I knew who made that suggestion as soon as I saw it on the comment feed. How about a word that's fun to say? Something slightly out of the ordinary, like foible. The masses will never give up trying to impress us with their command of the English language.
Well, I think it would be interesting to see the evolution of words listed on the site. I'd imagine that the impressive SAT lists went up first, followed by the categorical lists. The lists of created words are newer.
Yes u, I shot off my mouth w/o thinking. Again. This is why I edit so many comments. The first thing out of my mouth is always the dumbest.
I've been wanting first-added dates on words for some time now. We're almost like archeologists, digging down through the months (!) to the original layers of the site.
This is pretty much it. I really think of stuffie as a group game, and poetrie got lumped in there.
Junie B. is a ficitious first-grader who is still learning grammar rules. She's written for elementary kids, but I laugh out loud at the books myself. I hope you enjoy her.
I think that the thing to remember is that the points don't matter, and for that matter don't really exist. When I think about it, poetrie and prosie aren't actually games. Here's a link to the master list.
My summer break starts on Wednesday. Unforeseen circumstances will give me a much freer schedule than I'd anticipated, so we could get this moving again. Takers?
I am so confused, and it is way past my bedtime. When you click on add, it goes to the words you've recently added. If you're not signed in, it goes to the main page. My poor little brain can't take it.
Yay! I am so delighted to rediscover that this word. Miss Malarkey is a fictional elementary teacher who puts up with a lot of nonsense herself. My favorite book is the original, Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10.
I generally require that people who make my fabulous usernames list either use multiple words, or create a new one. screendoor merits it for sheer character.
Hey whichbe, you can actually favorite lists. They appear under your favorites section. I'll use this list as an example.
You'll usually see the creator write an introduction:
The comments section of this list is also a great place to make suggestions for the Wordie site, and discuss Wordie policies in general. Join the fray!
In reference to your third request, I don't like the idea of having the first person who adds the word control the conversation. I know that your words are a bit different, because they're created. However, I think that that could easily slide into censorship. There have been prior discussions concerning conversational control, but I can't remember where they are. I seem to remember John falling on the hands-off side of things, but somebody please correct me if I'm wrong.
As for your last request, you may have subscribed to a feed for the word. I've never done that, so I can't tell you how to fix it.
Thanks for the reference! I absolutely couldn't remember where it was from. Ok, 1834 is not archaic, but so many phrases are written into church songs, prayers, etc. and then petrified. For example, modern writers don't use 'thee' or 'thou', but we read them in church writings all the time (well, some churches). I can't imagine many people today using 'whelm', so I think of it as fossilized.
That being said, it would be cool to bring it back.
For your edification: I was associating "dropping like flies" (connoting lots of people) with the literal death that a fly would meet on a frog's tongue which I associated with the phrase "you're killing me". So, a backwards way of saying I appreciated the joke. I guess that post needed a ;) for lack normal auditory cues.
Ooo! I saw a new game at the store the other day. You choose three letters and players try to come up with as many words as they can using those letters. I feel as though somebody may have mentioned it before, but it's been awhile. What do you think?
Anybody know how to change the order of your lists once you've made them? The only way I've found is to create a new list and transfer the words one...at...a...time.
I'm not comparing the books in terms of sci-fi, but the in terms of feeling of joy I get from being sucked into an amazing plot. HGTG has great lines, but the plot in EG just grabs on like a leech and won't let go until you're done.
Huh. I read Hitchhiker and half of Restaurant this weekend. It's getting better, but not my favorite series. Maybe having just reread Ender's Game is hurting my opinion.
I once ran across an article with hilarious footnotes. The first twenty were completely serious, then the author started testing his luck. The editor either never caught them, or thought that they were too funny to cut. I need to see if I can find that one....
Your mom may just be a really good chef. My mom always baked our bacon in a two-level pan so it was less fattening. I didn't discover properly-fried bacon until college.
Wait a minute. How big are these things? I'm envisioning a Victorian bannister, suitable for sliding down, held up by slender spindles. How could a person fit in one of those?
Eek! Swimming pools in private homes freak me out. Sounds like a pefect setting for a real-life game of Clue! (While we're on the subject, that movie has great costumes. Miss Peacock is in muted rust, Mrs. White is in all black, etc.)
Oh, lol. I didn't get the joke. I thought that it was *supposed* to rhyme. I guess I should have clarified, is this chant for a soccer team in England?
Twas a pact forged in ages long past that the marauding Heidi shall ner again dominate with her iron and wood, nor with her soldiers and roads. And indeed, any settler who does not summon his resources to defend Katan (sic) from her grasping hand should take heed, for the common good of all is at stake! And so it is with heavy heart, that I must report from the front line that clan B--- cannot hope to fight this latest battle. They are yet to weary from weeks of travel, there is no food in their huts, many are sick, and the evil smell of the open road still clings to all their garments. And even as my scribe writes this, I am imprisoned behind bars of parchmentwork that have accumulated in my absence, baring my exit 'till the last embers of the fire die late in the evening. But to those who do battle, I say fight bravely! You hold the very fate of Katan in your hands.
This comment thread took me forever to unravel. There's a city of Poquoson in Virginia with the same pronunciation, and it's located in the same region as the Great Dismal Swamp.
There are no rules yet...but we need to come up with something. I just discovered that you can search all comments under the Recent Comments page. It even works with strings of letters. I've tried love, vivi, and acq so far. Some of the comment strings are really interesting.
ellenw, the problem with a megalist is that it would take a long time to load. Some lists have already crashed computers as is.
John, I was wondering if there was some way to add extra organization to the favorites page. I'm up to 50, and it's getting tough to navigate through them all.
Cool, thanks u. Also, thanks for saying straight up that something made you uncomfortable. Being a girl, I like to think that have the low-down on sketchy, but clearly not. I'll remove most of the comments tonight.
Well, I wanted people to be able to see the users' profiles. Since I don't know how to link to their profiles, I have to go fish some uncommon word out of their lists. There's nothing on there that they haven't put out themselves, and nothing that is one could use to identify them in real life. If *somebody* would teach me how to link to profiles, I could dispense with the comments.
I just wish we had a better way of *finding* them. The words are the connections, but that's so hit or miss. Today I'm trying to find elbowcrannies, but I can't remember which word lead me to their profile. I'd love to ramble through a list of users, beyond the top-hundred lists. John?
but, I was just thinking the same thing the other day. He or she created the best list *ever* and then disappear. I was also wondering about inkhorn and Lampbane. Sigh. Do you ever feel like there are about fifteen of us actually using the site, for make benefit of the glorious rest of the world?
trivet brings up a good point. Most stuffies are burried in uselessness' lists, but I know of at least one other random one besides my own. Is there a way we can organize or interconnect all the stuffies? uselessness, I don't know how to make links to lists, but maybe we could put a list of links under Wordplay? I think that they're a kind of game in themselves.
trivet, if you're not up for a lost stuffie, let me know. I happen to enjoy them.
Lol! SonofGroucho, I agree. This is my new favorite username, although we should ask danceswithtrout why he or she doesn't like the word they. I'm simply baffled.
I have been LOOKING for this word for ~ a year. I heard some old-timer use it last spring, but I misheard it as scarble. reid_burkland, you made my day!!!!
First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.
I slogged through the Hobbit, but came to the same conclusion. The modern reader (me) is too used to instant gratification.
(It's no shame not to have read HP. Once you start, you feel compelled to read all seven. Kinda like the Wheel of Time books. I am simply *not* going to try to keep up with all of those characters.)
chained_bear, wasn't it your lists that reportedly crashed computers? I think that that's worthy of a little heckling. Besides, I've never seen stpeter make a comment. It's no fun he's not gonna rise to the bait.
reesetee, forgive me if I gave any such impression. One can *never* love one's words too much. It's just that some lists should come with warning labels, as should some comments. ;)
Ok, if we're keeping it strictly to titles, then it could be manageable. However, if the witch doctor keeps telling me what to do, I'll throw something. Get it OUT of my HEAD.
See? This list is already too long. You nominated 13 words, and I've only added 10 of them. I'm vetoing one, so there are two words unaccounted for. By the time I scroll between the comment and the top of the list, my poor little brain has forgotten which words I was supposed to be remembering.
Uh, I don't think we were thinking of the same song. Roomie says that Brown Eyed Girl is Sha-la-la. We were thinking of the one that goes, "There she was, just-a walkin' down the street...."
Art? I'm not sure about martial arts either. Fortunately, my roommate is into both of these, so I shall consult an outside expert. But the rest are really good. Thanks :)
There are a lot of stuffies. I don't think I saw one with do, but please feel free to let me know (with fire and brimstone if necessary) if I have erred.
It's been awhile since a list made me laugh out loud. How about three snaps up? BTW, uselessness, your link to pbpbpbpbpb doesn't work. Now I need to see that thread.
You can also use your knuckles. Start at the left knuckle on your left hand. That's January. It has 31 days. Next, point to the space between that knuckle and the following. That's February. It has fewer than 31 days. March, May, and July round out the knuckles on the left hand. April and June are in the spaces. After July, you switch to your right hand and August is on your first knuckle. Etc., etc., etc. I promise that it's easier than it sounds.
I can guarantee that you won't find the word "timesed (not a real word, but annoying anyway)" in the dictionary. ;) What you want to do is enter timesed as a word and put your commentary (not a real word, but annoying anyway) on the page for that word.
Wow. You poor thing, you've never had a funnel cake. Think of a fritter, think of a hot doughnut, think of those little drips of waffle batter that always hang off the sides of the waffle. You haven't *lived* until you've had a funnel cake.
I noticed that you commented on wordie games awhile ago. Just wanted to let you know that some of us are using the username WordPlay to kick around some lists. Feel free to join in the fun!
Her name is pronounced "Trillion", but it's written out as "10^10". I doubt that my kids will have the mojo to carry off 10^10, but it is the coolest name, ever.
I'm willing to bet that schadenfreude stays on the most wordied, past seven days list because it is always listed on the homepage. Akimbo went through a similar period.
Well, I think that we’d have to allow for Internet searches, since we couldn’t prevent them. One person comes up with a category that’s bound to be limited. This person will judge for that round and cannot play. Each person has 24 hours to put together a list. I wish we could do a group list, but I don’t think wordie allows that yet. Eventually, that would be the ideal.
I first ran across this word while working in a reading group with my second grade students. Who writes for seven- and eight-year olds with an archaic word like quern?
Well, absent is in most of the online dictionaries as a transitive verb. Dictionary.com even uses the example of absenting oneself from a meeting. It’s pretty formal. I’ve heard it only a few times in real life, usually coming from an English teacher. :)
Oh, I would say that scrabble means that the word has to be legal in the game Scrabble. That does limit play, because I couldn't use Falling Water in the aforementioned architecture game. Although to be fair, the game does have to end sometime.
Like, I would say architecture, and edwardvielmetti would say house, Ecrivaine33 would say window, uselessness would say column, AbraxasZugzwang would say door, and we'd just keep going around until somebody broke?
Does firstflickr mean that we can use pictures?
When do we know that somebody gives up? How do we know who's playing?
I got as far as making a list of verbs that I needed to work on. :) I realized that no matter what system I used, it would still be based on either English or French. After that, the whole thing seem phony. I just love A verbs for the memories.
I always use "y'all". There was some commotion at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta b/c somebody held up a sign spelled ya'll. You just don't *do* that in the South. Personally, I have always wondered about the possessive. Is it y’all’s and all y'alls'?
However, the world's longest acronym according to the Guinness Book of Words is NIIOMTPLABOPARMBETZHELBETRABSBOMONIMONKONOTDTEKHSTROMONT (56 letters, 54 in Cyrillic). Found in the Concise Dictionary of Soviet Terminology, it means: The laboratory for shuttering, reinforcement, concrete and ferroconcrete operations for composite-monolithic and monolithic constructions of the Department of the Technology of Building-assembly operations of the Scientific Research Institute of the Organization for building mechanization and technical aid of the Academy of Building and Architecture of the USSR Stuart Kidd.

Oh my goodness! A friend and I stopped by this tiny convenience store in the mountains of South Carolina. jennarenn commented on the word footnote

I cannot breathe...just a minute.

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cause he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the Devil his due:
"I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cause I think I'm better than you."
The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cause I'm the best that's ever been."

In reference to your third request, I don't like the idea of having the first person who adds the word control the conversation. I know that your words are a bit different, because they're created. However, I think that that could easily slide into censorship. There have been prior discussions concerning conversational control, but I can't remember where they are. jennarenn commented on the word whelm
